âWhy donât you rest, young man? Youâve been through a lot. Oh, by the wayâwhatâs your name?â the doctor asked, pulling two chairs out from beneath the equipment and settling beside Ariel. The armored man followed, sitting without a word.
Ariel hesitated. He glanced at Ilya, still unconscious. Then answered softly, âMy name is Ariel. And Iâll stay with Ilya until she wakes up.â
The doctor gave a gentle nod, then gestured to the other doctor in the room. âGive us the room. And shut the door.â
The click of the door sounded final.
Now, only four people remained: Ariel, the doctor, the silent armored figure, and Ilyaâstill resting peacefully.
Then something strange happened.
The doctor reached into thin air.
His hand closed around nothingâand yet, something appeared in his palm. A small object shimmered into existence, as if plucked from another dimension.
Then⦠silence fell.
Not just silence, but stillness. Like the air had thickened. Like the room had been severed from the rest of the world.
âSo,â the doctor said softly, âAriel, is it? You can call me Dr. Walter. And this hereâ¦â
He tilted his head toward the armored man, who remained still.
A moment passed.
Then, finally, the man turned to Arielâhis gaze sharp and steady, as if he were scanning the very structure of his soul.
âAriel, right?â he asked despite knowing.
Ariel nodded.
âItâs good to meet you,â the man said, calm and practiced. âIâm captain of the third squad in the evacuation forces. A Blessed.â
His voice was smooth and composed, but it carried weightâlike steel wrapped in velvet.
âI know this isnât the best time,â he continued. âWe planned to wait until you recovered⦠but since you refuse to rest, would you mind helping us complete a few formalities?â
Ariel blinked. âFormalities?â
The man tilted his head. âAh. My bad. I guess you still donât know.â
He leaned forward slightly.
âYouâve awakened.â
Arielâs eyes widened. Something churned insideâpanic, confusionâand then memory surged in.
Flashes of blood. Screams.
His own voice, echoing in his head.
His fury.
His fists clenched. But he forced himself to calm down, knowing there were people here.
âI did hear something,â he admitted. âRight before I blacked out. But I didnât know what I heard.â
Dr. Walter exchanged a glance with the armored man, whose expression sharpened with interest.
âTell me something, Ariel,â the man said. âHow were you able to use Dormant energy⦠without turning into a monster?â
If you encounter this narrative on Amazon, note that it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.
Ariel blinked. âWhat do you mean?â
âYou know that no one can use Dormant power before they awaken, right?â the man asked.
âWhy not?â Ariel asked.
He answered without pause.
âBecause the human bodyâand more importantly, the soulâisnât strong enough. Dormant power is too heavy. Too corrupt. Using it before awakening drives people mad.â
âMad?â
âThey lose control,â Dr. Walter added. âThey become⦠something else.â
Ariel frowned. âThen why didnât I?â
âThatâs exactly what weâre trying to figure out,â the man said, voice low and serious. âYou broke rules we didnât even know could be broken.â
He leaned back slightly, armored fingers tapping against the metal armrest.
âWould you mind telling us,â he said, âhow you managed to rip an entire horde of monsters to piecesâeven a Phase Four Forsaken Abominationâwithout awakening properly?â
Ariel frowned. âHow do you know I was the one who killed the monsters?â
âOh, thatâs thanks to the heir of the Golden Vow Clan,â Marik replied, arms folded. âThey were the reinforcements the government sent.â
He exhaled slowly, leaning against the wall. âAlthough⦠they were late. But apparently, they arrived moments before your clash. They saw everythingâhow you tore through the horde. In under ten seconds.â
Arielâs expression faltered. âThey⦠saw me?â
âThey were stunned,â Marik continued. âDidnât even get the chance to act. You wiped out the monsters before anyone could react. After that, the Golden Vow took control of the situation and brought everyone back here, to the fortified capital.â
He tilted his head slightly. âAlso, Arenyaâthe heir herselfârequested to meet you. Maybe because she witnessed your power firsthand.â
Arielâs voice softened. âPlease thank her on my behalf, sir.â
âI will. But you still havenât answered my question.â Marikâs eyes narrowed. âHow exactly did you kill them all?â
Ariel didnât flinch. âI donât know,â he admitted. âAll I remember is⦠the monsters tried to hurt Ilya.â
He paused, jaw clenched. âAnd then I got angry. So I killed them.â
Marik blinked. ââ¦Right. That simple, huh?â
He chuckled once, low and skeptical. âYouâre a peculiar one, you know that?â
Then, his tone shiftedâbusiness-like. âBefore I go, there are two things I need to tell you. One: an overview of your powers, since you clearly donât understand them. And two: the governmentâs recruitment offer.â
He glanced at Walter, then sighed. âIâm pressed for time, so Walter will explain your powers in detail. As for the government offerâ¦â
Marik straightened and looked Ariel in the eye. âThe truth is, we donât know what exactly you are. But we do know youâre powerful. And right now, we need power.â
He continued, voice low. âWe can guarantee your sisterâs safety. Put her on the priority list, move her to the central continent, keep her in academy hostels until you return.â
Arielâs eyes widened slightly, and Marik pressed on.
âThe government will ensure her protectionâeven if something happens to you.â
His voice turned firm. âWeâll provide you with resources, training, support, and a high-paying salary. Youâll be helping with evacuations and containment operations, and once the current crisis is over, youâre free to walk away.â
He let that hang In the air.
âBut,â Marik added with a wry smile, âbetween us, I doubt youâll even need us.â
âWhat do you mean?â Ariel asked.
âLetâs just say⦠if the Golden Vow knows your name now, the other Great Clans wonât be far behind. And when the clans want someoneâthey get them.â
He raised a hand preemptively. âNot saying Arenya will sell you out. I believe she wonât. But other clan members were there too. Word spreads.â
Marik glanced at Ilya, then back to Ariel.
âAnyway, you donât have to answer now. Rest. Think. And take care of that sister of yours.â
He turned to leave, then gave a final nod.
âI wish you both a swift recovery. Excuse me.â
Ariel stood and bowed slightly. âThank you, sir.â
Marik nodded once more, then turned to Walter. âHeâs all yours now.â
With that, he exited.
Now, only three remained in the room: Ariel, Walter, and unconscious Ilya.
Walter chuckled softly. âYou can relax now, young man. That guy always makes everyone feel like theyâre on trial.â
Ariel exhaled, tension finally fading from his shoulders. He was quiet for a moment, then looked at Walter.
âDoctor⦠what are my powers? I really donât know anything about this stuff.â
Walter blinked. âWhat? Didnât they teach you this in school?â
âI dropped out when I was nine,â Ariel said. âFamily stuff.â
Walter paused, then softened. âIâm sorry to hear that.â
He reached over and patted Ariel on the head.
âDonât worry. Iâll explain from scratch.â
He smiled warmly. âBut first, letâs introduce ourselves properly, yeah?â
Walter sat up straighter, his tone light. âYou already know my name. I work for the government. Iâm a Rank 2 Blessed, just like Marikâbut my ability focuses more on healing.â
He leaned back with a nostalgic grin. âBack in the day, Marik and I were partners on more missions than I can count.â
Ariel blinked. âYouâre a Blessed too?â
âOf course,â Walter replied. âBut donât worry, I wonât be ripping monsters in half anytime soon. I specialize in putting people back togetherânot taking them apart.â
He folded his arms. âNow then. Letâs talk about youâ¦â
