Ariel walked into the crumbling old house, Ilya held protectively in his arms. The scent of dust and old wood barely registered beneath the rage burning in his chest.
He turned toward the silent entity beside him.
âBring her mattress.â
Orryx, the harbinger of silence and death, obeyed. A ripple tore through space, and with reverence, the mattress appeared. Ariel gently laid Ilya down. Her soft silver hairânow matted with blood and bandagesâspread like spilled moonlight across the fabric.
He ran a trembling hand through her hair.
Then he asked, voice low, âHow did you learn human language and all this knowledge⦠and whatâs your name?â
The void creature bowed. âThis mortal knowledge is trivial, my lord. As for my nameââ The air twisted around him like ripples in black water. âI am Orryx. The Executioner of the Void.â
Ariel gave a nod. âThen give me space.â
Orryx vanished into the fissure from which he came.
Ariel stayed, kneeling beside Ilya, who hadnât stirred. His fingers brushed her cold forehead. And thenâhe broke.
Tears spilled like ink across her cheeks, mixing with the blood already staining her face.
âIâm sorry⦠Ilya. I failed you. I⦠failed.â
The illusion came flooding back.
That battlefield. That black-winged bird.
Her bodyâlifeless in his arms. By his own hands.
His cries grew louder. âIâm scared⦠Ilya. Scared of losing you. Please⦠wake up. Please.â
But silence answered.
The minutes dragged. Then the hours. Untilâsix painful hours laterâshe stirred.
Before her eyes opened, she felt something soft and wet fall on her face. Not rain.
Tears.
She blinked slowly, a vague silhouette hovering over her, trembling, crying.
âBroâ¦brother? You returned! Are you⦠okay?â
Arielâs eyes finally lit up again.
If you discover this narrative on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the violation.
âWhy wouldnât I be?â he whispered, smiling shakily. âDidnât I promise?â
But that promise⦠heâd already broken. Promised to protect her. Failed to keep her safe. And worseâheâd killed her, in a way. Even if it was an illusion⦠it couldâve been real.
It would have been.
Fate always circles back.
He fought back the storm in his chest.
âAre you alright, Ilya? What happened?â
She blinked a few times. âMy head hurts. Dizzy⦠but Iâm okay.â
Her voice faltered. She hesitated.
Ariel leaned in. âDonât hide it, please. Tell me.â
She looked away, then nodded, softly.
âAfter you went to sleep⦠the Quiet Witness trial, remember? They came. The men in black army clothes. The ones who always take our money.â
Her voice quivered.
âI told them I had nothing. But they didnât believe me. They hit me. Then⦠then they saidââmy body would do.ââ
She looked up, confused, innocent. âWhat does that mean, brother?â
Ariel didnât answer. He didnât move. He couldnât breathe.
His fists clenched. Every vein in his body burned like magma.
âThey started tearing my clothes. I fought, but they hit me again. Thatâs all I remember. Brother⦠please donât do anything. I canât lose you. I donât want to be alone. I canât be alone again.â
Ariel inhaled, then turned his head.
Ilya followed his gaze.
Space tore like paper. A fissure ripped open.
Orryx stepped through.
âYou heard her,â Ariel said, his voice flat and dead. âPain. Equal to that cursed bird. But only for the guilty. Leave the innocent. Bring me their ashes. Or their heads.â
Orryx bowed low.
âAs you command, my lord.â
He vanished into the breach.
Ilya trembled. âBrother⦠what was that terrifying thing?â
Ariel wiped his face. âJust your guard dog. Hired him two days ago.â
She squinted. âThatâs a lie.â
But she didnât press. She never did, when he looked like that.
Instead, he pulled her into a hug.
âYou always worry me. You little chaos magnet. When are you going to stop giving me heart attacks?â
He kissed the top of her head. âStill⦠I promised you, didnât I? That if I came back from the trial, Iâd give you everything. Letâs start now.â
Ilya sniffed. âBut⦠youâre crying again.â
Ariel looked away. The illusion. Her body. Her blood on his hands. The pain was endless. And it wouldnât fade.
But he smiled through it.
âMe? Crying? Youâre seeing things.â
âLiar,â she snapped. âYou always lie and hide your pain. You think Iâm too small to understand?â
Ariel sighed, chuckled, and wiped his face.
âThere it is again. That wise little adult voice.â
He stood. âAlright, up. Youâre a mess.â
She looked at herselfâblood, dirt, torn clothesâand laughed a little.
He carried her to the bathroom, water still running from ancient, creaky pipes. This houseâabandoned by the wealthy after some beast ravaged the streetsâwas still better than nothing. And Ariel had claimed it years ago. Stolen, technically. But no one missed it.
He bathed her carefully. Washed her silver hair with trembling fingers, making sure not a single spot of blood remained.
Ilya pouted, blushing. âB-Brother⦠this is embarrassingâ¦â
âYouâre a kid,â Ariel teased. âWhy so shy?â
âI am not!â
He laughed. A real laugh this time. Then shampooed her hair with the leftover luxury items the house still hid in its corners.
When he finished, she looked radiant. A small goddess of purity, wrapped in an oversized old towel.
He dressed her, gently, and that familiar dark grin crept across his face.
âWhat happened?â Ilya asked, raising a brow.
âNothing,â Ariel replied. âWeâre going shopping Sunday.â
âShopping? Brother, weâre broke.â
He ruffled her hair. âDid you forget? I awakened. Iâll bring in enough to buy you a whole manor in the city. Maybe even ten.â
He wasnât sure of that. He was still a dormant Rank 1. Only one seal broken. Eight more to go.
But he had a plan.
And that plan?
Started with Orryx returningâ¦
Arms full of vengeance.
