Danny drove around the streets, aimlessly, it was better than the alternative. Anything was better than waiting for the phone to ring, wondering what might be said when it did. Waiting for the worst to happen but at the same time praying it didn't.
Demi leaned on the door, her face rested on the car window. She watched dazed as they slowly passed house after house, street after street. Under her breath she prayed they would see Ben and Trevor. But chances were slim, they were probably miles away in a different car by now.
Danny looked in the rear-view mirror at Amanda; who had curled up in a ball on the back seat and fallen asleep.
"This is karma Danny!"
"What?"
"I held Trevor in my arms after you left the other day and thanked god what happened to Emily didn't happen to him, I shouldn't have done that!"
"Don't be silly Dem, that's normal anyone would do that, it doesn't make you a bad person."
"What about what I did to Victoria, I didn't need to say that stuff, I made her look like a monster. I'm supposed to be her friend, I was horrible in court, I was just so angry about what happened with Ben, but that wasn't even her fault."
Danny looked over at his sister and smiled reassuringly.
"It doesn't matter, none of this is your fault, not what happened with Vic, Emily, even Ben. I promise you none of it had anything to do with karma, it's just messed up, that's all!"
"No your wrong especially about Ben, I should have handled it differently. If I hadn't been so angry none of this would have happened. I never dreamed he would try to take Trevor away. What if something bad happens Danny, I don't know what I would do if I lost Trevor."
"You won't, you will see it's going to be all right, I promise Dem."
"I know how Victoria must feel now, and I made it even worse for her. I turned on her, I will never forgive myself for the way I treated her....."
Danny's mobile rang at exactly 9.11pm, he looked at it, 911, an omen maybe? He pulled over to the side of the road and pressed the answer button.
As he answered it he looked over at Demi. She watched him wide eyed as though she may jump on him like a wild creature and pry the phone away from his hand at any second.
"Where is he, have they found him, Danny speak to me...." she whispered interrupting.
"Shhh," he said looking at Demi and putting his finger to his lips. After a small pause he said quietly into the phone, "thank you, we will be right there," and hung up.
"Danny, god dammit answer me, is he ok, what did they say?" hissed Demi.
"It was the police, they have Trevor at the hospital, and he is ok."
"Oh my god, no matter what happens, I will apologise to Victoria tomorrow," said Demi solemnly, as Danny whirled the car around and sped towards the hospital.
"Me too Dem," said Danny sadly.
They made it to the hospital in record time and the three of them rushed in through the emergency room doors.
Danny couldn't help but remember the same breathlessness and lump in his throat a few weeks beforehand when he and Victoria had taken Emily to the hospital. Poor Emily, he was so caught up in this mess he hadn't even given her a thought....
------------------------------------------------------------------
Trevor had to be ok, Danny told her he was, and she believed him. Her brother was the only person she could trust, he would never lie to her.
As Demi rushed alongside Danny and Amanda, every step they took seemed to take an eternity, nothing short of a marathon, with the finish line prize being her holding Trevor safely in her arms.
"Once I have Trevor back I will hit Ben so hard in the face I'll break his nose again," said Demi breathlessly.
A police officer met them half way along a corridor and ushered them into a room. Demi expected to see Ben holding Trevor, or another police officer or at least a nurse. She let out a gasp as she come face to face with Ben's receptionist.
This time Sarah wasn't naked from the waist up, writhing in Ben's chair, she held her son. Her hair fell over her face, and she had mascara streaks from where she had been crying, she looked a mess.
"What is that tramp doing here?" Accused Demi raising her fist at Sarah.
The police officer who had brought them in stood between Demi and Sarah.
"You owe this lady a debt of gratitude, she called us and told us where to find your baby. Things would have turned out much worse if it hadn't been for her quick action," said the police officer.
Demi stopped, her face softened as Sarah offered her Trevor.
"You are right, thank you for looking out for my baby."
"No, I'm sorry, I'm so so sorry, I couldn't stop him in time, I was so scared," sobbed Sarah uncontrollably as Demi took Trevor from her arms.
Demi looked at the police officer.
"Stop who, what happened?"
"It's your husband; he turned the gun on himself as we tried to rescue Trevor."
"But he is ok, right?"
"I'm afraid not, he committed suicide."
Demi crumpled to the floor with Trevor still in her arms.
"Dead, no he can't be, not dead, Danny?"
Danny stood frozen to the spot. Demi's words from earlier on in the car kept echoing in his mind, if karma played a part in this whole mess.... he was screwed.
