1 week before
Marilyn sat down with coffee and toast at the tiny breakfast nook in Gino's high rise apartment in the middle of Adelaide; she liked to sit there in the mornings overlooking the world going about its business.
The world down below would be getting ready to go to work, but she didn't have to worry about working, not now, she was a soon to be a trophy wife. She was a lady of leisure, the hardest work she had to do today was let the house maid in the front door and worry about what gorgeous dress in her overflowing wardrobe she was going to wear. And which one of her rich girlfriends she was going to have lunch with.
Gino come out of the bedroom dressed for work and danced over to her, kissing her on the cheek. "You get more beautiful every time I see you," he whispered in her ear.
As she looked up at him and smiled adoringly, he stole a piece of her toast and quickly stepped away.
Seeing him escaping with her breakfast she lifted a fist in the air, "Why you little..." as Gino scurried towards the door biting into the toast triumphantly.
She smiled at him, she didn't mind really and blew him a kiss as he went out the door. Next week would be their 2 month anniversary since they were engaged and she was really beginning to settle into her new luxurious life with Gino. He was fun, his life was fun and he loved to spoil her rotten. When she would object he would say sweetly, "Nothing is too good for my beautiful Marilyn!"
She had arranged a special little celebratory lunch for their 2 month milestone. Although Gino liked to do things big, and he was planning a big gathering to celebrate on the night, she had compromised with him and organized a quiet secluded little lunch together just the two of them at Jazzlands. He agreed, she knew he would. He couldn't say no to her.
Biting down on the last remaining piece of toast and washing it down with a swig of tea she wiped the crumbs away from her silky peach colored pajama top and picked up the newspaper on the table. She liked to flick through the social pages every morning, now she was practically social royalty.
Marilyn had learned the importance of keeping up with Adelaide's local social celebrities and if she was really lucky she might see her and Gino in some of the pictures, which she always cut out and put away in her glory box of memories.
She opened up the paper and missed the social section by one page. As she went to turn the page a name caught her eye, so she read on. It was a small postage stamp sized article maybe a hundred or so words, but it might well have been a flashing neon truck the way it hit her. Marilyn's eyes widened as she read the article, then reread it and gasped....this changed everything.
