CHAPTER 9

As he drove down the road Danny saw Demi run out after him. He just didn't want to talk about it, he didn't want to tell her what had happened with Nurse Rose. What would she think of him!

But Demi was right, he should be going to see Victoria. He should have gone straight there after getting the clothes, what was he thinking!

As he drove towards the police station he thought about that he was going to say to her once they come face to face, her behind bars and him free. Should he apologise? No, apologies were an admission of guilt. Would she be angry with him? Of course she would it was his fault she was in there.

Did he really think he could just stroll in there and say "Hi honey, brought you some clothes, well have a nice day locked up in that holding cell, looks kind of cozy in there...?" He was such a bastard!

He pulled up at the police station, opened the boot and dragged out Victoria's suitcase and rolled it inside. Still not sure what he was going to say or do once he was face to face with Victoria.

A buzzer went off as he entered and a police officer come to the front counter.

"Officer Crawley, how can I help you?" He said with a smile.

"Victoria, Thorne," then pointing at the suitcase beside him, "Her clothes."

Crawley looked at the suitcase, "Hang on a minute....." before leaving the counter and disappearing through a door into another room.

Crawley come back through a different door a few moments later and told Danny to follow him. He was led to a well-lit office, with 'interview room' written on the front of the door. Inside the room was an older man with mean looking brown eyes, he wasn't dressed in a police uniform he was wearing a gray suit. As Danny looked at him he got the impression that he wasn't a police officer.

The man stood up and extended his arm out to shake Danny's hand. Setting the suitcase down in a corner then stepping forward the two men shook hands as the older man said confidently, "Daniel Jacobs? I am Alistair James. I am the court appointed prosecutor for your case, perfect timing actually. I was just picking up the paperwork for it and was planning on arranging a meeting with you tomorrow." Pointing to a chair Alistair continued, "but since you are here, we can do it now - please take a seat."

Danny sat in the chair Alistair pointed at and looked at him, waiting to hear what he had to say. Alistair looked over to the door where Crawley was still standing and said politely, "Thank you Andy, I can take it from here."

Crawley closed the door behind him as he left and Alistair turned his attention to Danny.

"Ok, so I have been appointed to this case, it's an easy one to win, and I always win!"

Danny looked at the man puzzled, moments ago when Crawley was standing at the door he was polite, well spoken, now his tone had dropped and his eyes got even meaner.

"What do you mean?"

Alistair rolled his eyes, "You are being called as my main witness, that means that you are on the opposing team to your wife. On this charge we need to prove that beyond a reasonable doubt that she hurt little what's-her-name -"

"Emily, little what's-her-name happens to be my daughter Emily!" growled Danny, he already knew he didn't like Alistair he was cruel, ruthless and uncaring.

"Yes, ok, little Emily, looking at the file it is going to be pretty easy to win this with her history - she has guilty stamped all over her."

"What will happen to Victoria if she is guilty though?"

"You think too much mate, don't worry about it," said Alistair flicking Danny's question away with a wave of his hand."

"What will happen!" said Danny clenching his fists.

"Oh I don't know, maybe two years in the women's prison in Perth, maybe less with good behavior?"

"Jail, she will go to jail? Cried Danny putting his hands over his face, "No, she can't go to jail, can't we do something?"

"Sure, we can charge you too, put both of you up and chuck the two ankle biters in permanent foster homes, that would get some results, everyone would be happy then!" Alistair growled.

"No!"

"Well unless you want to end up in there next to her you better do as I tell you. I don't lose, I don't care who did it, I don't need you to tell me anything, I will do all the telling, understand!"

Danny stood up, "I think we are done here, I want to go and see Victoria now!"

"About that, you are on the prosecution side; you aren't allowed to have any contact with her until after the court case!"

"Well doesn't it just keep getting better, screw you!" said Danny storming out of the room and coming face to face with Crawley in the corridor.

"My wife's personal belongings are in the other room, please see to it that she gets them....can I go now!" he said through clenched teeth.

Crawley's eyes widened as he used his security clearance card to open the door Danny had come in from, "Is everything alright Mr. Jacobs?"

Storming out of the door Danny said over his shoulder, "Why don't you ask him!"

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tiny wheels rolling on concrete, followed by clanking of gates, left little doubt in Victoria's mind that someone was coming. Maybe it was Danny or Demi, maybe the police had changed their mind, maybe they were going to let her go free after all?

Victoria stood up and wrapped her hands around the bars as the noise grew closer, it was Crawley, wheeling something behind him, a suit case. She looked at it carefully. It was familiar - it was her red suitcase, the matching one Danny had bought her for Christmas.

"Danny, is Danny coming?" she asked Crawley trying to see if Danny was following behind him.

"No, he didn't ask to see you, he seemed angry and was in a hurry and just said see that you got this,"

"Just leave it out there for now, please go."

Crawley sat the suitcase beside her door clanking the gates behind him as he left.

Victoria sunk down onto the floor, why hadn't he come to see her, and Crawley said he was angry, was he angry at her?
