Ironhand had them bow to one another before he went back to stand with the others. âFight.â
Foresight and resonance came back to Gregory in an instant. He attacked the general with all the skill he had; if Ruzi was Egilâs equal, Gregory knew he had to be the aggressor.
Ruziâs shock was clear as Gregory pushed him back. Heâd heard that Gregory was skilled, but he hadnât fully believed the young magi was truly a worthy opponentâ no magi had dedicated themselves to a weapon. That belief was shattered as he worked frantically to not lose right away.
âYouâre skilled,â Ruzi grunted as he tried to find an opening to turn the tables.
Gregory didnât answer the general; he just attacked faster. Ruziâs grimace was clear to everyone, as was Gregoryâs calm expression, since no one had sparring helms on. Knowing he had to take a risk, Ruzi started in on a kata thatâd won him many duels. His jaw dropped when Gregory was in the perfect spot at the exact moment to not only stop his attack, but to counter it. The return thrust bruised the generalâs ribs, staggering him backward.
âGeneral Ruzi is defeated,â Ironhand said, the respect clear in his voice. âZhu, you are up.â
The Hardened Fist grandmaster hefted his odachi onto his shoulder. âHeâs skilled, but can he manage it against someone who can augment himself?â
Ruzi stepped back, his lips compressed. His pride was battered, as heâd never had a spar so one-sided in his life.
âSir, might I check?â Mindie asked softly.
âIâm fine,â Ruzi growled, then winced. âBut go ahead.â
Mindie quickly healed his bruised ribs. âHe has bested Magi-killer, too, sir,â she whispered.
Ruzi grunted. âThat wasnât in Egilâs report. Iâll be having words with him.â
âFight!â Ironhandâs command had both of them focus on the match.
Zhu blazed with aether as he charged Gregory. Gregory stayed still, barely moving. The fight was done in seconds. Zhu staggered back, grasping his neck and gagging for a long second before he spat to the side. âWhat in Aetherâs name?â
âYou gave up any chance to block with your attack, sir,â Gregory said simply. âI wouldâve been hard-pressed to see your attack normally, but I already knew where it would be and how to get past it.â
Ironhand chuckled. âIâve told you before, Zhu, you are too aggressive.â
Grimacing, the grandmaster bowed stiffly to Gregory. âI will do better if we fight in the future.â
âI will do my best to be a challenge if that day comes, sir.â Gregory bowed deeply to the older magi.
Ruzi stepped forward again. âI wish to fight you without your aether, Pettit. Your wife says you have sparred with Egil and won.â
âI have, sir. My first time facing him was as a novice in Armsmaster Watashiâs home. He also fought me during my week of training during my apprentice year. I won a spar back then.â
âYou sparred him without aether?â
âYes, sir. I want to improve my skill.â
âPerfect,â Ruzi said as he smiled. âIronhand, adjudicate.â
âYes, sir,â Ironhand said. There was a slight frown on his lips, as he was annoyed that heâd been shunted aside.
The pair bowed to each other, then clashed when Ironhand called them to begin. This time, the match took longer. Both of them smiled as the fight drew out. Ruzi felt his blood rush; he hadnât had a challenge of this caliber since heâd last sparred with Egil.
In the end, Gregory won, bringing what wouldâve been the cutting edge of his blade back against Ruziâs knee.
Panting hard, Ruzi grinned. âThat was much better. Youâve bested two armsmasters, Pettit. One more and you will be given the title, as well.â
âThank you, sir,â Gregory chuckled. âI donât think Iâll obtain the title. My job is to the empire, not to myself.â
âFew magi feel that way, and those that do are in my clan, Pettit. You turned us down, instead siding with our parent clan. Why?â Ironhand asked as Mindie checked on Ruzi.
âItâs where my heart belongs, sir,â Gregory said as he caught his breath. âEverything has been right for me since I accepted the elderâs offer.â
âHe will be missed, even with as much he and I disagreed on his clinging to that old belief of his,â Ironhand shook his head. âThat is not important. Now we fight.â
âI will adjudicate the last fight,â Zhu said. âIronhand, go ahead.â
The elder suddenly had a sheathed katana in his hand. âI will not be as easy to defeat, Initiate.â He tied the sheath to the weapon before he moved forward.
âIâll do my best, sir,â Gregory said, pulling on the aether in his ring.
The pair bowed as Zhu dictated. Having checked Gregory, Mindie stepped back to stand beside Ruzi again.
âFight!â Zhu barked suddenly.
Gregory and Ironhand met in a rush as both attacked. Ironhand balanced strength and speedâ he shouldâve overpowered Gregory, but Gregory wasnât where Ironhand thought he would be.
Gregory expended his aether faster than he wanted, as Ironhand was trying to lightly meditate to obscure the future. It still wasnât as taxing as itâd been in the past, Gregoryâs resonance making the future clearer for him.
Gregory was elusive, always shifting to the exact place he needed to dodge. Ironhand burned his aether freely, giving himself enough speed to deflect Gregoryâs attacks. The fighters parried, blocked, and dodged each otherâs attacks as if they were in a choreographed fight.
Zhu frowned; the spar was lasting longer than his, and he felt foolish for attempting to overpower the initiate. He briefly wondered if he could entice Pettit into another match after Ironhand. Most magi would if enough vela or aether-infusion herbs were offered.
The fight stretched out and Ironhand burned his aether rapidly, never having been pushed in a fight as hard as he was right now. Eyes narrow, he was unsure of what more he could do if he stayed limited down to a magus. The shock of him even contemplating breaking rules just to win snapped the meditation heâd been holding.
The end came suddenly after that moment. Gregoryâs block stopped the descending katana cold before his foot caught Ironhand square in the balls. Ironhand grunted; heâd kept a light reinforcement over his body anytime he fought, but itâd been ages since someone had kicked him like that. That second of distraction was all Gregory needed to push the katana out, then triple jab Ironhandâs neck.
âStop!â Zhu commanded. âIronhand?â
âYes. He would have gashed me by the third attack if I was only a magus. Itâs been generations since someone kicked me in such a way.â
Gregory bowed, then dropped to his knees, breathing hard. âThank you, sir, for the trainingâ¦â
Mindie rushed forward with a vial in her hand. âDrink.â
Gregory did as she demanded, coughing at the flavor before giving her the vial back.
âWell, we can say he has skill with his weapon,â Zhu snorted. âSurprised he lasted as long as he did. Pity, though. I was going to ask for a rematch.â
âSorry, sir,â Gregory apologized, getting back to his feet with Mindieâs help. âI had aether stored in my ring. Iâll have to refill it again.â
âWe are done,â Ironhand said slowly. âMagus, take him and his horse back to his camp.â
âYes, sir,â Mindie said.
Ruzi grunted. âWhen you see Egil after that, tell him to attend me.â
âYes, sir,â Mindie bowed.
Gregory leaned on Mindie as he let his weapon go back into his ring. âRide behind me?â
âOf course.â
~*~*~
As they rode slowly back to his camp, Gregory smiled at the feeling of Mindie pressed into his back, her arms around his waist while he held the reins. âWillof, can I have a little time with my wife as we ride back?â
âThat should be fine,â Willof said, then he rode ahead of them.
âAre you being kept from us?â Gregory asked once Willof was farther away.
âThey said I have to stay in Egilâs camp,â Mindie pouted. âI only had the one night with Yuki.â
âPity,â Gregory sighed. âI couldâve used my healer to pamper me tonight.â
âI would have, too. Two senior magi and another armsmaster?â she murmured. âThe rumors will definitely spread.â
âI know,â Gregory said. âI couldnât just lay down though. My stubborn pride wouldnât let me lose.â
âIâm just glad there were no accidents.â
âMe, too. Iâm sure it wouldâve been terrible if Iâd injured one of them more than I had.â
âYou werenât worried about them hurting you?â
âWith you there to help? Nope.â
His faith in her made her body sing, and she kissed the back of his neck. âThank you, my heart.â
Gregory smiled. âI never fear when my dear healer is nearby. Jenn and Yuki are just as confident in you.â
âI know, and when you tell me, my body heats with joy.â
They rode in silence, and Gregory caught sight of the sneers that some of the other magi and guards threw their way.
âYouâll show them in the next two tests,â Mindie murmured. âYou, Jenn, and Yuki will make them choke on their insults.â
âNot all of them are bad.â Gregory gave Farin a nod as the dual-magic magi waved to him. âSome are even friends.â
âA few, but yes, youâre right.â
âDrop me off, then go let Egil know that the general is mad with him,â Gregory chuckled.
âEgil will laugh that Ruzi challenged you, then again that you won.â
âProbably. It sounded like Ruzi didnât know how much Egil and I had sparred.â
âHe had no idea. Iâm sure itâll come out now.â
âProbably.â
Reaching the camp, Basal rushed out to take Legacyâs reins. âSir, are you okay?â
âHe had a tough day, but he did well,â Willof said, having been waiting for them. âI hate to say it, but you need to go, Mindie.â
âItâs fine. I know,â Mindie nodded. She gave Gregory a quick kiss on the cheek. âRest and recover, dear one.â
âI will,â Gregory said. âI love you.â
âAnd I, you, my heart.â With one last, long look, she turned to go.
Davis was coming their way at a fast walk. âSir, are you okay?â
âIt was a trying day,â Gregory said wanly. âLetâs go sit, and Iâll explain.â
