Jennâs toes slowly uncurled, her entire being shuddering with release. âGood morning, indeed.â
âFor us, too,â Yukiko giggled, kissing Jennâs thigh.
âThank youâ¦â Mindie nuzzled Jennâs neck. âIâm still recovering from your attention.â
Gregory just smiled and cuddled Jenn from the other side. âWe really do appreciate it.â
âA pleasant belated birthday, to be sure,â Jenn murmured. âWeâll all miss birthdays next year, though.â
âNext year will be harder,â Yukiko sighed.
âYes, but after that, itâll be better again,â Mindie smiled softly.
âIt should be time soon,â Gregory said before he rolled out of bed. âWe have today to come up with our plan for securing the city.â
âTwo weeks,â Yukiko said. She kissed Jennâs thigh one more time before leaving the bed. âThatâs a lot of time for things to go wrong.â
âAs understaffed as weâll be, itâll be shocking if things only go slightly wrong,â Jenn sighed as she got up.
âWe have to send them mostly out alone,â Gregory said. âItâll be the only way not to leave a massive gap.â
âNo doubt the criminals of the city will be looking forward to getting away with things,â Yukiko sighed, getting dressed.
âGreg, can you look ahead each day?â Jenn asked as she went over to the basin, in need of a quick rinse.
âIt wonât be perfect, but it might at least give us some warning,â Gregory murmured. âUsing resonance will help with that. Iâll only know what gets reported, but itâll be better than nothing.â
âBefore breakfast, so we can make our plans based on what you know?â Yukiko asked.
âThatâd be for the best,â Gregory agreed.
âIf any of your men get injured, Iâll be ready to help,â Mindie said as she took the washcloth from Jenn.
âWhich will help a lot. We canât have any of them off rotation,â Jenn said.
âItâll be a challenge,â Yukiko agreed. âAfter breakfast, Iâd like to call a meeting with our lieutenants and advisors. Weâll need a map of the city, as well.â
âThereâs one in the war room,â Mindie said. âEgil was looking at it the other day.â
âProbably making sure we even had a chance to pull this off,â Jenn said.
âYeah. He wouldnât give us an impossible task, just a difficult one,â Gregory nodded.
âEgil has proven that heâll push us, but heâs never gone too far,â Yukiko agreed. âBeing pushed is fine; we grow better for it.â
Once he was dressed, Gregory took a seat in one of the chairs in the bedroom. Taking a few slow breaths, he reached out for his resonance, then opened foresight. He wanted to know what was reported by his lieutenant at the end of the day tomorrow. The future sped by until he reached the reports for the day after dinner.
After a couple of minutes, Gregory nodded slowly. Letting go of his aether, he exhaled, feeling the drain from what heâd done. âTwo major events. Thereâs one we stopped and one we missed.â
âDo we bring it up during the meeting or not?â Jenn asked.
âYes. We want them to know that weâre utilizing everything we have. It would look odd if we just happened to stop everything otherwise,â Yukiko said.
âGreg, are you okay?â
âIâll be better after breakfast,â Gregory said. âItâs taxing, even with resonance.â
âNot as bad, though,â Yukiko smiled softly. âRemember last year?â
âWhen we were going to train in Waterrock?â
âDiaâs incident at the stables before we left,â Yukiko clarified.
âOh, right. He was wiped out for the rest of the day,â Jenn nodded.
âI have more aether now, and resonance helps cut down how much I use,â Gregory added. âI could still fight with foresight up, just nowhere near as long.â
âLong enough, Iâd bet,â Mindie said. The fifth bell sounded, and Mindie began to rush to get dressed. âIâll hurry.â
~*~*~
The war room had a rough map of the city spread out on the table. Parts of it were clearly marked out, showing the various patrol areas. Gregory took one side of the table with Davis beside him. Jenn and Yukiko took two other sides with their lieutenants, leaving the fourth for the advisors.
âLots of ground to coverâ¦â Davis muttered.
âWeâll have to put entire squads on the gates as it is,â Yukikoâs lieutenant, Max Pellant said. âGate guard duty for a city is a minimum of five, meaning that, at most, we could pull one out of a squad for that.â
âNot the sergeants. We need one on each gate,â Jayson Taylor, Jennâs lieutenant, added.
âWeâll have to work with the minimums,â Yukiko said. âWeâll put the last of each squad close to the gate that the rest of their squad is on.â
âGlasson for us,â Davis said. âPut them on the gate weâve used.â
âWe should rotate them, but we can do that today,â Jenn said. âWe want every squad to get time on the gates and patrols.â
âYes, that would be best,â Gregory nodded. âLetâs plot out how to separate out the men we have.â
~*~*~
âWhy have you and the lieutenants not been assigned?â Ben askedâ theyâd spent a couple of hours going back and forth over how to redivide the city with fewer people.
âWe just hadnât gotten there yet,â Gregory said. âLieutenants will be roving between the gate on the section that most of our men are in. If whistles blow, they need to be there, which means on horse.â
âFast response,â Jayson nodded. âThe others will have to respond, as well, but having us on horseback gives us options.â
âAnd the magi?â Ella asked.
âWeâll be doing something different,â Gregory said. âIâve looked at whatâs most likely to happen tomorrow. There are two major incidents. For one of them, the men handle it with a few injuries, but nothing serious. The second, we wonât hear about until after the fact. The three of us will be handling that.â
âWhatâs going to happen?â Willof asked.
âBright Gold, a jewelry shop near the garden park, gets robbed. It happens shortly after the whistles for the first major incident. So either itâs a planned distraction or a target of opportunity when the guards leave the area.â
âIf itâs planned, no one will go near the place with three magi around,â Ben snorted.
âWeâll be going in without our kimonos,â Jenn smiled. âCivilian clothing. Weâll also be leaving after stopping in one at a time. Weâll be going in to inform the owner and for Yuki to have a nice dark spot she can leap to.â
âItâll take everything I have, but I can bring one of them with me,â Yukiko said. âGregory has a trick to manage his own entrance.â
âWeâll be inside the backroom, waiting,â Gregory grinned.
âForesight doesnât mean guaranteed, from what Iâve been told,â Ben said.
âIt doesnât,â Gregory agreed. âThis is the most likely future. If we donât tell the men or spread it outside this room, it should happen. Itâll only change that weâre there to stop the robbery.â
âIf itâs a planned event and not an opportunity, thatâll set the planners well back,â Willof mused. âTheyâd be scrambling to figure out how we knew.â
âGregory using his foresight gives them an edge to deter the worst,â Ella murmured. âNo wonder Egil didnât appear worried about them handling the city while shorthanded.â
âWeâll use everything we have to complete our tasks,â Yukiko said. âWeâll do just like we have before, except now, we have more to work with because weâre together.â
âDamned city has no idea how safe it is,â Max snorted. âOkay, Iâll let the men know. Weâll need a copy of the map so we can show them their routes.â
âThe barracks has one,â Willof said.
âWeâll go explain the routes to them now, then,â Jayson said.
âBet a few take a stroll to get a feel for it,â Davis said.
âNo bet,â Max chuckled.
The lieutenants left the room, chatting with each other.
âDo you plan to use your foresight every day for the next two weeks, Gregory?â Ben asked.
âI can manage it, so yes.â
âYou three do realize how far ahead of most magi you are, right?â Ella asked. She tapped her chest where their medallions were resting under their clothing.
âAnywhere from a half-tier to a full tier,â Yukiko said. âYes, but we use the Peaceful Fist, which trains two paths, so it isnât that shocking.â
âA valid point, especially with the additives they take,â Willof said.
âAgreed, but someone will take notice at the tournament,â Ben said. âIâd bet theyâre still the fastest-ranking magi in decades, or even centuries.â
âWe can ask Rafiq,â Willof suggested. âHe might have a book on it. I swear he brought half the archive with him.â
âNo one has a ringâ¦â Ella trailed off, then looked at the three magi in the room with her. âNever mind. He might, after all.â
Gregory chuckled. âHe doesnât have that many books, but he does have a surprising number of them. Weâve even traded a few to change up what we have to read.â
âOh, we need to do that,â Yukiko said.
âPlease,â Jenn agreed.
âMight as well. Tomorrow comes quickly enough,â Gregory said.
The three advisors stayed in the room, letting the door shut before they started chuckling.
âOh, the tournament is going to get a rude shock,â Ben snickered.
âThe judges are in for a surprise,â Ella agreed.
âDid you two get to the advanced marches for honor assignments?â Willof asked.
âYes. They were still working on weapon exchange.â
âSame,â Ben nodded. âYukiko has aced every metric we score them on.â
âGregoryâs done the same,â Willof nodded.
âMake that all three,â Ella said. âJenn took a little longer to get there, but she really had things locked down after we visited the city the first time.â
âWhen they had a chance to talk,â Ben smiled. âIf only we had a few dozen of them. How secure would the empire be, then?â
Willof and Ella had to agree; if other initiates trained like these three did, the empire would be in a much better place.
