Chapter 73 of 73

Chapter Seventy-Five

As the laughter and conversation at the diner continued, Lena glanced over at Jaxon, who was already looking at her. There was a silent understanding between them. The night had been amazing, but now, they were ready for some time alone.

Jaxon leaned in toward Ethan and Madison. "Would you guys mind if Lena and I head out?"

Ethan barely looked up from his shake, but there was something just a little too casual in the way he shrugged. "Go for it." His tone was easy, but the way he stole a quick glance at Madison before taking a slow sip of his drink gave him away.

Madison waved them off. "Yeah, yeah, go be disgustingly cute somewhere else."

Lena smirked as she slid out of the booth, Jaxon right behind her. As they made their way toward the exit, Jaxon leaned down slightly. "So, is it just me, or did you also notice some interesting tension back there?"

Lena grinned, glancing over her shoulder at Ethan and Madison, who were now deep in conversation, their heads leaning slightly toward each other. "Oh, I noticed."

Jaxon shook his head with a chuckle. "Looks like Madison's still getting her date with a Walker after all."

Lena let out a laugh, shaking her head. "Yeah, but I doubt this is how she pictured it but something tells me she won't be too mad about it."

They stepped outside into the cool night air, the streetlights casting a soft glow over the parking lot. The energy of the game and the diner faded, replaced by something quieter, something just for them.

Jaxon reached for her hand, lacing his fingers through hers. "So, what now?"

Lena tilted her head, pretending to think. "Hmm. I guess we could go back to your place and watch a movie."

Jaxon grinned. "You do realize that whenever you say 'watch a movie,' we never actually watch the movie, right?"

Lena feigned innocence. "I have no idea what you're talking about."

Jaxon chuckled, tugging her closer. "You are so full of it."

She laughed, and for a moment, they just stood there, wrapped in the quiet of the night, their hands intertwined, their worlds finally still.

Jaxon brushed a strand of hair behind her ear, his touch lingering just a second longer than necessary. His voice was softer now, edged with something unguarded. "You know, this might've been one of the best nights of my life. And I think all the best nights of my life have one thing in common."

Lena tilted her head, her smile teasing but gentle. "Oh yeah? And what's that?"

He held her gaze, his thumb tracing slow, soothing circles against the back of her hand, like he wanted to memorize the feeling of her. "You."

Lena's breath caught, the world around them blurring into nothing but the quiet hum of the night and the steady rhythm of his heartbeat under her fingers. Warmth spread through her chest, soft and certain. But instead of overthinking it, instead of searching for the perfect words, she simply smiled and reached for him, pulling him closer.

Jaxon met her halfway, his lips brushing hers with a hesitation that melted almost instantly. The kiss was slow, unhurried—like they had all the time in the world. His hand cupped her jaw, his thumb grazing her cheek as he deepened it just enough to make her stomach flutter. She leaned into him, fingers curling into the fabric of his jacket, holding him there, as if letting go would break the spell.

By the time they finally pulled back, their foreheads rested together, breaths mingling in the cool night air. Jaxon smiled, his voice barely above a whisper. "Yeah. Definitely one of the best."

Lena let out a soft laugh, pressing another quick, featherlight kiss to his lips before murmuring, "I think there are going to be a lot more."
