Chapter 20 of 73

Chapter Twenty

I'm still fuming as I walk toward my next class, Ethan's words echoing in my head. I see the way you're starting to look back.

No. Absolutely not. I refuse to entertain the idea that Ethan could be right.

But just as I turn the corner, a figure steps into my path, blocking my way. I barely stop myself from running into her.

"Well, well," a sickly sweet voice says. "Lena Carter."

I look up to see Madison Harper—head cheerleader and unfortunately, the girl who now holds the winning bid on Jaxon Walker.

I inwardly groan. Here we go.

She crosses her arms, giving me a once-over like I'm something stuck to the bottom of her designer sneakers. "I was going to ask if you got lost on your way to your seat in the cafeteria, but I think we both know that's not what happened."

I raise an eyebrow. "Is there a point to this, or did you just want to practice your villain monologue?"

Her expression hardens. "What's going on with you and Jaxon?"

I sigh. "Nothing."

Madison lets out a sharp laugh. "Oh, please. The entire school saw him practically drape himself over you at lunch. He hasn't looked at a girl like that since—"

She cuts herself off, pressing her lips together.

"Since...?" I prompt.

Her eyes narrow. "Since we dated junior year."

Something uneasy flickers through me. Jaxon dated Madison? I feel like I should've known that. Nope. Not going there.

I square my shoulders. "Madison, I don't know what you want me to say. Jaxon's Jaxon. He flirts with everyone."

She tilts her head, studying me. "Right. So you wouldn't mind if I remind him what he's supposed to be doing Friday night, then?"

I blink. "Friday night?"

Madison's lips curl, all too pleased with herself. "Our date. The one I won. You didn't forget, did you?"

I did forget. And now, the reminder makes my stomach twist uncomfortably—not that it matters. It's not like I care.

"Nope," I lie smoothly. "Totally remembered. Have fun with that."

Her smirk deepens, like she knows something I don't. "Oh, I will. Trust me."

She flips her hair over her shoulder and struts past me, leaving me standing in the hallway, watching her go.

And for some reason, the thought of Jaxon on a date with her doesn't sit right.
