âWhat are you doing? Let me go.â Yvette tried to push Xavier away, but he only held her tighter. He freed one hand to gently grasp Yvetteâs slender one.
âDonât move. You might hurt our baby.â He then added, âItâs almost three months old now, right? We should go for a prenatal checkâup today.â
Realizing heâd only just thought of this, Yvette frowned. âIâve already had the checkâup. The baby is healthy. And for the last time, this baby is not yours.â
Xavier seemed unfazed as he carried her upstairs.
âXavier, put me down. Iâm not going to the bedroom.â Yvette protested, digging her nails into his arm. However, he didnât seem to feel the pain as he continued to hold her.
Yvette noticed heâd become increasingly overbearing lately. Once he had her in the bedroom, Xavier closed the door and carefully laid her on the bed.
âBe good,â he whispered.
Yvette felt exasperated. She couldnât believe that she still couldnât physically overpower him even when he was blind. Exhausted, she decided not to argue further. She eventually fell asleep.
Listening to her steady breathing, Xavier made sure she was deeply asleep before he quietly left the room.
Mark was waiting for him outside. When he saw Xavier he immediately opened the car door.
They drove into the most luxurious building in Sangine County, which housed the countryâs top psychiatrists and stateâofâtheâart equipment.
Xavier lay down and continued his treatment. His memories had been becoming clearer recently.
Strangely, the clearer his memories became, the lonelier he felt. Much of his childhood memories had returned, and he could recall his past with Yvette. He remembered their wedding, how he had been tricked, and everyoneâs mocking gazes and words.
When he suddenly opened his eyes, there was a cold expression on his face.
The psychiatrist, Hector Ingham, hurriedly asked, âMr. Lane, are you alright?â Heâd noticed Xavierâs erratic heartbeat and weak brainwaves earlier.
Xavier clenched his fists. His forehead was beaded with sweat. âIâm fine.â
Seeing that, Hector said, âWeâll end todayâs session here.â He was concerned that Xavier might be
overwhelmed if they continued with the treatment.
Xavier didnât push for more treatment. On the ride back, he remained silent, lost in thought. His vision was completely gone nowâa development that seemed to suit certain peopleâs plans perfectly.
âMr. Lane, weâve arrived,â Mark announced.
Xavier hummed in response before stepping out of the car.
Mark watched as Xavier walked back into the house.

Inside, Yvette, whoâd woken up, was helping the cook Xavier had hired, Grace Holtz, prepare dinner. Seeing Xavier return, she asked, âHowâs your treatment going?â
Even though Xavier had recalled some humiliating memories related to Yvette, hearing her voice made his breath catch, as if heâd done something wrong.
He avoided her gaze and replied flatly, âThe doctor says my memories wonât come back, but my physical injuries have mostly healed.â
Heâd once told Yvette heâd do everything to recover his memory. But now, he was afraid to tell her that he had indeed recovered some of his memories.
âOh.â Yvette was clearly disappointed.
Xavier stepped closer to her. âWhat? Do you want me to get my memory back that badly?â
âOf course. You can leave once you remember everything,â Yvette answered without hesitation.
So that was her plan? Xavierâs lips curled into a selfâmocking smile.
Yvette didnât notice the change in his demeanor. âCome on, help with the dishes. Why are you just standing there? I donât feed freeloaders.â
Xavierâs throat tightened. Even though he didnât want to do as Yvette told him, his legs moved on their own, carrying him toward her. He then stretched out his hands and got to work.
