Chapter 142
Daphne couldnât believe her ears. âYou werenât like this before, Yvvy.â
Yvette used to act so high and mighty. Why would she leave Xaver for money now?
âIs the title of Mrs. Lane not worth ten billion dollars?â Yvette asked in return.
Daphne laughed. âYouâve really changed. I still remember what you told me during our university days. You said youâd never fight me for a man. It turns out you didnât just take my man; youâre even asking for money before I can have him back.â
She was exceptionally wellâversed in playing the victim.
There was nothing but mockery behind Yvetteâs eyes. âEveryone knows that it was Xavier who didnât want an orphan like youâI didnât take anything from you.â
Daphneâs face contorted with rage. âThatâs enough! Are you sure money is all youâre after?â
Yvette nodded. âI hope you can keep this conversation between us. If you tell him I asked you for money, the deal is off. Iâll never leave him alone, and youâll never become Mrs. Lane.â
Yvette said this on purposeâshe wanted Daphne to tell Xavier. She had a plan of her own in case Daphne went ahead and told him.
On the other hand, if Daphne actually went ahead and prepared ten billion dollars, Yvette would be more than glad to accept it from her.
Despite everything, she was still confident that Daphne would choose to snitch on her.
It was the norm for her, after all. In the past, Daphne used to frame Yvette for things that she hadnât done. Hence, there was probably no way she would let this opportunity slip by.
âIâll think about it,â Daphne declared before taking her leave.
Before she left the room, she caught a glimpse of the music sheets on Yvetteâs desk.
She felt a bit puzzled, but she didnât think much of it. Someone with a hearing problem couldnât possibly have had any affinity for music anyway.
Little did she know that Yvette was actually the talented foreign composer, Cameron.
After Daphne left, Yvette gradually put away her music sheets before lying down on her bed. Meanwhile, Daphne was still figuring out a way to tell Xavier about Yvetteâs request. If she told him bluntly, he would never believe her. She had tattled on Yvette too many times before.
After a short moment, she got an idea. She decided to give Yvette a portion of the money in advance. She just needed Xavier to catch Yvette with the money.

The next morning, Daphne had someone prepare breakfast. She seemed to think of herself as the lady of the household.
Yvette was constantly exhausted and would often wake up at later hours. While she was still in bed, there was already a breakfast spread prepared in the dining room.
Xavier was already home and was seated in the living room.
âBreakfast is ready, Xav,â Daphne called.
He shot her a brief glance. âIâve already had my breakfast. You should head home after youâve to stay had yours as well. If you find it inconvenient to return to your house, Iâll arrange for you at a hotel.â
Daphne had already been rejected multiple times. She didnât dare overextend her stay lest Xavier became angry with her.
âThat would be great. Thank you.â
Afterward, Daphne left the manor in a limousine. As soon as she got into the vehicle, she had someone prepare a check. Then, she sent Yvette a text.
âI prepared 200 million dollars. Letâs meet at Junction Cafe at 10:00 pm tonight. Iâd feel more at ease if I handed it to you too.â
Yvette woke up at 8:00 am. She checked her phone and found the text that Daphne had sent
her.
That was all it took to convince Daphne? Something didnât feel right. Despite that, Yvette wanted to see what Daphne was trying to do. So, she texted Daphne back and agreed.
