Chapter 462:
Her straightforward delivery caught Huey off guard. He froze, visibly stunned, for a long ten seconds before regaining his composure.
âSo, thatâs why Mom was on the phone yesterday about my marital status? Were you all listening in?â
âYes,â Eileen confirmed, glancing toward the kitchen. âRuby and I overheard everything.â
Huey smacked his forehead, a realization dawning on him. âOh no, Iâve been so caught up with my competition training that I avoided talking about my marital status, fearing it would lead to endless questions from my mom. Is Ruby upset?â
Hueyâs sudden understanding explained the chilly reception he had sensed upon his arrival.
âLetâs set aside the issue of your marital status for now,â Eileen continued, her tone serious. âTell me, is it true that youâre still meeting with the woman your mother wants you to marry?â
Huey, typically lighthearted, blushed deeply. âMy mom told me that if I didnât like her, I could choose someone else. She was convinced Iâd fall for her. But honestly, my heart belongs to Bailee. Iâm just meeting this woman to satisfy my mom, then Iâll bring Bailee home as my real partner.â
His voice carried a conviction, as if everything was unfolding according to his plan.
âMaybe you think this approach works for you, but what about Baileeâs feelings?â Eileen countered, her voice firm. âSheâs legally your wife now, and yet you hide your marriage from your mother and secretly date another woman. Do you really think Bailee will tolerate being manipulated just to gain your motherâs approval?â
Huey might achieve his goal, but it would come at the cost of leaving Bailee feeling uneasy.
âThenâ¦â Huey stuttered, suddenly unsure. âThen what should I do? Has Ruby found out everything? Sheâs bound to speak with Bailee. How do I explain this to her?â
Hueyâs attempts to deceive one person had inadvertently hurt both Bailee and Ruby, leaving him completely at a loss.

Her expression was stern, her eyes tinged with redness. Snatching her purse from the sofa, she declared, âEileen, thereâs an urgent matter at work. I need to leave now. Weâll reconnect later.â
With that, Bailee strode toward the door, swapping her shoes as she reached the threshold. Huey, seated with a tense look on his face, didnât budge.
âArenât you coming?â Bailee snapped, her irritation evident. âCan you even manage to eat without me here?â
âIâll leave!â Huey urged, springing to his feet. In a whisper to Eileen, he added, âEileen, could you put in a good word for me with Ruby? I need to sort things out with Bailee first.â
With that, he dashed out, swift as the wind.
