Chapter 440:
Despite her encouragement, Roderick hesitated, his eyes still scanning the menu for the least expensive items.
Eileen took the menu from him and handed it to the waiter, ordering several of the restaurantâs signature dishes.
âHowâs everything else going? Is work too demanding? Have you managed to save up for your restaurant?â Eileen inquired, shifting the conversation to his aspirations.
âYeah, Iâve been saving,â Roderick replied with cautious optimism. âI send $8,000 a month to Judie, and $1,500 to my mom. With Judieâs income, we manage our living expenses and still save about $10,000 a month. Plus, with the $100,000 you helped us with, I should be able to open a restaurant in a couple of years.â
Hearing his hopeful plans, Eileen felt a pang of sympathy for the prolonged effort Roderick would have to endure.
Silently, she sent a quick message to Raymond.
Continuing their conversation, Roderick added, âJudieâs been feeling really guilty about the past, Eileen. Sheâs been thinking about inviting you over to make amends. She really wants to apologize in person.â
After a brief pause, Eileen responded, âLetâs talk about that some other time.â
âSure,â Roderick agreed quickly, then shifted the topic to something more pressing. âMomâs been feeling under the weather lately. She keeps asking about you.â
Eileenâs concern was immediate. âWhatâs wrong with her? If she needs medical attention, donât let finances stop her.â
Roderick shook his head. âItâs not about money. She just wonât see a doctor. She keeps complaining about headaches, taking days off work. If she continues like this, she might lose her job.â
Frequent absences could indeed jeopardize her employment.
Eileen suspected Deniseâs ailments might be less medical and more an excuse to avoid work.
A monthly income of $1,500 wasnât substantial, but without it, Deniseâs expenses would only escalate.
âIâm tied up with work myself. Weâll get together when I can make some time. Meanwhile, encourage her to seek medical advice if sheâs genuinely ill, and to keep her job if she isnât.â
Roderick nodded. âYouâre right, I shouldnât have troubled you with this. Iâll handle it.â
The conversation then veered toward Roderickâs plans for his restaurant, discussing potential locations and their hefty rents. His passion for his future business was palpable.
