Chapter 27:
Bailee chimed in swiftly, cutting off any chance for Eileen to refuse. She said to Huey, âYou know, Eileen leans towards lighter fare. Find somewhere that fits the bill and text her the details later.â
Huey caught the hint of reluctance from Eileen and quickly nodded in agreement. âAlright, youâve got plans. Donât let me hold you up.â
He offered a parting wave and settled into his vehicle. Eileen let out a soft sigh as she slid behind her wheel, and Bailee hopped into the seat beside her, securing her seatbelt before offering a playful smirk.
âWe seem like a match. A little young, maybe, but heâs impressive. Heâs taken a shine to you, and since Mom introduced him to you, why not give it a try?â Bailee said.
With a gentle rumble, the engine came to life. Eileen peered out at Hueyâs departing car and chuckled softly. âIs now really a good time for me to dive into romance?â The question hung in the air, unspoken thoughts of Bryan lingering in Eileenâs mind.
Baileeâs eyes widened in sudden realization. âAre you still tangled up with Bryan? With all the media buzz about him and Vivian, Iâm surprised he hasnât ended things with you.â
The puzzle of Bryanâs intentions was a riddle for Eileen as well. âMaybe, just maybe, he has actually fallen for you?â Bailee speculated.
Eileenâs laugh was light, her gaze filled with mockery. âAre you joking? Thatâs impossible.â
Bailee was earnest. âNo, Iâm not! You have everything going for youâbeauty, brains, and youâre genuine. Without considering your family background, youâre way better than Vivian.â
âSo, youâre pushing me to compete with Vivian for Bryanâs heart? Is that your plan?â Eileen was blunt.
Your storytelling destination is gαâηÏνððsâ¤com Bailee hesitated, the weight of her own words settling in. âYou know what? Never mind all that. Hueyâs a catch, and heâs into you. You canât miss this opportunity to be with him,â she said.
Eileen just stayed quiet.
Baileeâs youth shone through her words, blind to the tangled web of Eileenâs circumstances. If things with Bryan ended in shambles, Eileen would be left in ruins. What prospects could she possibly hope for after being entangled in such a messy affair?
Inside the hospitalâs somber and bustling walls, Eileenâs and Baileeâs presence felt like a burst of sunlight. The ward seemed emptier and more peaceful, with just the trio remaining after a patient transfer.
Ruby was delighted to see them and soon began chatting. Huey became the topic once more. âMom, you heard from Eileen, right? Theyâve kept in touch. Whatâs the rush?â Bailee chimed in, her tone light. âEileenâs grabbing lunch with Huey today. You donât need to worry about this.â
This seemed to energize Ruby, and before eleven, she gently nudged Eileen. âDonât let time slip by. Off you go to see Huey.â
Eileen found herself nudged out of the hospitalâs embrace sooner than expected. Huey had texted her a location not long ago, and there was still time to spare. With no shelter from the harsh sun, she opted to head to the restaurant ahead of schedule.
Settled by the window, a glass of juice in hand, Eileen surrendered to the digital world, her fingers dancing across her phoneâs screen as she awaited Hueyâs arrival.
In the secluded space on the second floor, surrounded by glass that revealed the bustling scene below, Bryan was nestled in a corner, his attention fixed on his phone. Jacob fidgeted with his phone beside him, his complaints filling the air.
âWhy pull tight into your dinner with Vivian? Itâs awkward for me to be here. Plus, sheâs already late,â Jacob muttered with a frown.
On Bryanâs screen, a persistent friend request from âKnockWoodâ lingeredâan alias he recognized as Eileenâs boyfriend. Bryanâs mind replayed Eileenâs boyfriendâs words: âEileen, Iâll protect you!â
He scoffed, dismissing the request with a swipe.
Jacob glanced over, confusion written across his face. âSomething on your mind? Youâre not usually one to play the waiting game.â
Bryanâs response was a frosty look and a nudge against Jacobâs chair. âJust drop it, will you?â he said sharply.
Jacob rose, biting back any retort, and wandered over to the French windows. His eyes searched the crowd below.
Vivian was absent, but Eileen was there, her juice half-finished, her focus locked on her phone, showing no signs of urgencyâclearly, she wasnât the one running late.
Jacob nudged Bryan gently. âSee? Eileenâs the whole package. Sheâs got it all, even punctual for a simple date.â
Bryanâs eyes shifted to catch a glimpse of Eileen. The light dress she wore played with the sunlight, lending a gentle glow to her features. A mole near her eye stood out against her clear skin, her appearance a picture of softness not seen in her work attire. At that moment, she was the epitome of femininity, waiting for someone else. Bryanâs eyes darkened.
âIf you tell grandmother you want to marry Eileen, will she approve?â Jacob asked Bryan.
Bryan gave him a look that was hard to read, a small crease forming between his brows. Jacob caught the change in his demeanor. âHey, Iâm just thinking out loud here. And even if you want to, Eileen wonât marry you. She has someone whoâs already winning the race.â He turned, catching sight of a figure approaching. âAnd hereâs her date, flowers in hand and all.â
Downstairs, Eileenâs reaction to the vibrant roses was one of visible surprise. Hueyâs muffled voice broke through the floral display. âEileen, hurry! Iâve been hurt by a thorn!â
Eileen rose swiftly to accept the bouquet, only to see Huey grappling with a thorn on his face. Laughter escaped her as she witnessed his small misfortune.
âMy mom insisted I bring flowers. Donât read too much into it,â Huey explained with a light-hearted shrug, removing the thorn from his face.
Eileen arranged the roses beside her and gestured for service, her composure seamless.
Eileen and Hueyâs rapport flowed easily, devoid of any awkwardness. They were like close friends. But for Bryan, witnessing their effortless interaction seemed to illustrate a tender portrait of romance.
Meanwhile, Vivian made her entrance, her eyes narrowing upon spotting Jacob.
Jacob couldnât resist a tease. âFashionably late, arenât you? Good thing Bryanâs the patient type.â
Bryan gestured to the vacant seat beside him. âSit,â he said, his voice calm.
Vivian settled in, shaking the tension with a practiced smile. âYou know itâs almost a ritual for me to take my time getting ready. Waiting is just part of the gentlemanâs code, right?â
Jacob reclined in his seat. âIâm starving now.â
As they dined, Eileen felt at ease with Huey, their conversation flowing effortlessly like that of old friends. She listened to his family stories and chatted about her day at work.
Post-meal, Eileen signaled for the check. Then, she caught sight of Jacob on the upper floor; Jacobâs smile at her was unmistakable.
âIsnât that one of your colleagues, Eileen? I saw him before at the resort,â Huey said.
Eileenâs eyes followed Hueyâs gaze, spotting not just Jacob but also the unmistakable silhouette of Bryan.
âShould we drop by for a quick hello?â Huey asked.
Eileen exchanged a knowing look with Jacob from a distance, then turned to Huey. âItâs not necessary. Heâs more of an acquaintance through my friend. He is the one who played that game with us before.â
A thought seemed to strike Huey as he peered again toward the private area. âThen is Apex here?â
At that moment, Bryan glanced their way, his gaze briefly meeting Hueyâs.
Taken aback, Huey asked, âIs that your boss?â
Eileen confirmed with a nod, her expression neutral.
âAnd the lady with him, whoâs she?â Huey asked. His world revolved around gaming, far removed from the corporate gossip mill. The headlines about Bryan and Vivian had slipped by him unnoticed.
Aware of Bryanâs request for Eileenâs room key before, Huey now observed Bryan with another woman, their closeness unmistakable. He couldnât help but wonder if Eileen was caught in a web of unsolicited advances at work. It might explain her prominent role within the companyâyet, there was no disdain from him, only empathy, considering Eileenâs sacrifices for her motherâs health expenses.
Driven by a protective instinct, Huey made a decisive move. He escorted Eileen upstairs, directly to where Bryan was.
Taken off guard by Hueyâs assertive manner, Eileen found herself following him. Huey didnât hesitate, swinging the door open and wrapping his arm around her shoulders intimately.
âHello! Youâre acquaintances of Eileenâs through work, right? Just stopping by to say hi,â Huey said with a warm smile.
Eileen was momentarily speechless, processing the current situation. Vivian and Jacob were both taken aback by Hueyâs bold move.
Jacobâs gaze swung to Bryan with an air of excitement. âLooks like youâve got visitors.â
Bryanâs reaction was subtleâa hint of amusement graced his expression as he gestured toward the empty seats.
âFeel free to join us,â he said.
