Chapter 215:
The person on the other end of the call hesitated. âWhat do you mean? Explain it to me clearly!â
Feeling a chill, Eileen instinctively wrapped her arms around herself. Noticing this, Bryan turned off the air conditioning in the car. From the back seat, Milford saw this and couldnât suppress a laugh.
Hearing Milfordâs laughter, Eileen glanced back at him. âBryan, you really take care of Ms. Curtis well,â Milford chuckled. He wanted to continue, but the stern look Bryan shot him through the rearview mirror silenced him. What had he said wrong?
Eileen tucked her hair behind her ear, her cheeks tinged with red. As they arrived at the door of the educational agency, she exited the car but paused to look back. Through the slightly open window, she told Bryan, âBuy him two sets of clothes and shoes, along with some items heâll need since heâs living with us.â
Bryan nodded and responded patiently. He waited until he saw her enter the building before starting the conversation with Milford. âYouâre welcome to stay with us, but there are three rules.â Bryanâs voice was cold as he continued, âFirst, you need to resolve any issues with Zola by yourself. We wonât get involved.â
âOkay!â Milford replied swiftly.
âSecond, donât upset Eileen,â Bryan said.
Milford nodded, taking Bryanâs words seriously.
Bryan continued, âThird, donât bother Eileen except for tutoring sessions.â

He had expected Bryan to come up with some rules, and it seemed that two of the three rules directly involved Eileen. Pondering this, he realized he needed to keep his distance from her while also currying her favor to live with them.
Milford didnât take the rule about Zola seriously. âBryan, you and Ms. Curtis are really suited for each other! Ms. Curtis seems so distant to others, but with you, she seems different⦠When are you two going to get married?â Milford tried to flatter Bryan since Eileen wasnât around.
Bryan remained unmoved. âCut the crap. Do you have your phone with you? Contact Zola and explain everything to her. Eileen and I wonât be doing that for you.â
âI donât have a phone right now,â Milford responded. âMaybe you could get me a cheap one? I promise I wonât play games anymore. Iâll only use it for calls. Iâll pay you back in the future.â
Bryan couldnât help but sneer. Milford assumed that to someone wealthy like Bryan, a cheap phone would still mean something in the range of two to three thousand dollars. Yet, Milford hadnât expected Bryan to be quite stingy.
In the evening, when Eileen went to tutor Adalina, she didnât bring Milford with her. However, she shared with Adalina that she had located Milford, and Adalina was overjoyed.
After her tutoring session, Eileen returned home and pulled out a stack of test papers she had prepared in advance for Milford. âComplete these at home tomorrow. Also, Iâve uploaded some study materials in our chat. You should read them tonight.â
âI canât,â Milford said, pulling out a vintage cell phone from his pocket. âI canât log into WhatsApp with this.â
The phone looked brand new and was likely a recent purchase by Bryan. Eileen, taken aback, asked in a low voice, âDid you upset Bryan?â
Milford immediately shook his head and said, âNo, I didnâtââ
Before he could finish, he noticed Bryan stepping out of the kitchen. He quickly stood up and retreated a few steps. âMs. Curtis, may I use your laptop? Iâll return it tomorrow after I finish reading the materials.â
Eileen was at a loss for words. She turned and glanced at Bryan. His white shirt sleeves were rolled up, revealing his muscular arms. He raised his eyes and glanced at Milford, who looked pitiful, and then at Eileen.
âGo wash up and get ready for dinner. Youâre visiting your mom later, right?â Bryan said to Eileen.
Eileen nodded and rolled up her sleeves to wash her hands, puzzled. Bryan seemed so gentle; why would Milford be intimidated by him?
At the dinner table, Milford ate quickly. Once he was full, he used Eileenâs laptop to read the materials.
After dinner, Eileen went to visit Ruby. When she arrived, Ruby and the others were having dinner, and Ruby could only eat some soup. Eileen took the bowl and spoon from Bailee and said, âIâll feed her. You go ahead and eat.â
She settled next to Ruby and skillfully fed her the soup, saying, âThe soup smells great. Mom, youâve taught Bailee to cook well.â
Ruby smiled warmly and glanced at Bailee with pride.
âMrs. Curtis, youâre spoiling Eileen. She canât cook at all. When you get better, you really should teach her properly,â Phoebe teased.
Eileen rolled her eyes at Phoebe. âLike youâre any better at cooking.â
