âSo these are the stables!â I skip inside, half-dragging Hyunâs coach behind me by the sleeve of his dobok. Without doubt, heâs stronger than his student, because Iâm pretty sure Hyun wouldâve fallen down at least once by now if Iâd been dragging him along like this.
We walk quickly past the first three massive stalls to the final one in the back, where my own beautiful mount lounges lazily in the corner, her powerful tail flicking back and forth. I grab several carrots out the bucket hanging on her stall door and toss them in. She snorts in appreciation before going to town. Her munching sounds are so satisfying.
âWowâ¦â the human blinks, lips parting. âItâs so...soâ¦â
âGorgeous?â
âClean,â he finishes. âIâm used to stables having, uh, a very particular scent.â
âWell itâs not like our mounts want to sit around in the aroma of shit all day and night,â I roll my eyes. âBesides -- they kind of justâ¦â I wave my hand, âgo off wherever they want when weâre not riding them.â
âLike the Earth?â
âYup!â I grin. âMy black beauty absolutely adores running around Serengeti when sheâs not hanging out with me in my chambers or napping out here.â
He blinks at me, eyes searching my face. I can practically see the gears turning in his head and the only thing that could make this funnier would be if smoke began coming out of his ears. Holding in my laughter is impossible, but at least I remember to cover my mouth to make it more polite.
âIâm sorry,â I say between giggles. âItâs been so long since Iâve been around humans, that Iâm all over the place.â
âNo problem,â he says slowly, still eyeing me warily.
He must think Iâm crazy, bless his little heart. Wait a minuteâ¦
âWhat was your name again?â I put my hands on my hips, wracking my brain. I know he said it...what the heck, why canât I remember?
âShin Sa-do,â he replies.
âWere your parents convinced you were cursed?â Conquest leans their head out from their mountâs stable. Sa-do lets out a little sound of surprise. I snicker; humans are adorable.

âIâm sorry,â Hyunâs coach rubs the back of his neck in embarrassment. âWhat was that about a curse?â
âYour name,â Conquest fully steps out, wiping their hands upon their thighs. A few strands of hay flutter to the floor with the motion. âDoesnât sado mean âthinking of with great sorrowâ? Throw on your surname shin, your name means something to the effect âthinking of god with great sorrowâ or âgod thinks of with great sorrow,â doesnât it?â
âOooh, how interesting,â I clap my hands together lightly.
âIâve never thought too much about it,â Sa-do shifts from one foot to the other, determinedly looking away from Conquestâs steady gaze.
We look at each other over the humanâs head, eyebrows arching. Oooh, somebody has a story that they don't want to share. Matching grins turn up our mouth corners, and I clear my throat to smile back at Sa-do. âWeâre big fans of significant naming around here, so no need to feel shy.â
âI guess my father knew ahead of time Iâd be the family disappointment,â the human clears his throat, peering into the stall belonging to Deathâs mount.
âI wouldnât,â Conquest warns. âSilver could kill you faster than a single beat of a hummingbirdâs wing and, trust me, if War wasnât sulking--â
âHeâd absolutely push you in there just so he could watch,â I finish with a snort.
âNo offense, you sound like you wouldnât mind shoving me in here either,â Sa-do eyes me nervously.
I canât resist: I wink.
He blinks.
âDonât worry,â Conquest snorts behind him. âDeath said you stay alive, so youâll stay alive.â
I shrug, âConquestâs right. What Death says pretty much goes around here.â
âI noticed...why is that?â Sa-do frowns, still looking into Silverâs stable.
âWhy is what?â
âWhy do the Four Horsemen even have a hierarchy?â he cocks his head to the side. âI mean...it looks like Death is the one getting the orders fromâ¦â he points a finger up towards the ceiling. âAnd, like you said: what she says, goes. Despite your, uhhh...red friendâs issues? Even with his objections, neither of you have bothered to question any of Deathâs decisions.â Sa-do shrugs, âItâs just interesting. From an outsiderâs point of view, that is,â he adds on quickly, as if heâs afraid weâd be offended by his thoughts.
Why would we be offended? Itâs not like any of the four of us have ever been able to talk about ourselves with a human -- Iâd have never thought such droll things would interest him. Heâs not asking at all about the things weâve seen or places weâve been. Instead, he only wants to know how and why we work the way we do. Itâs all so managerial and not nearly as interesting as our respective adventures through the times.
What a curious little cat. I really do like this human.
