Chapter 6

I told you that this would be much bigger! Tell me how you think it is!

Chapter 6

Alexia woke up to Mr. Dillenwater staring down at her with a strange look.  It took her only a second before she remembered what had happened before she was knocked out.  She scowled at Mr. Dillenwater and tried to get up to punch him only to find that she was bound to a table with leather straps over her legs, stomach, and chest.  "Let me go!  NOW!"  She screeched at him, squirming and trying to be free of the straps digging into her.

"I'm sorry Alexia, I can't do that.  You shouldn't even be awake right now, that drug was to keep you out for another two hours.  That's okay though, we have all of our tests already done, so we can now introduce you into the community."  He said with an evil grin.

"Community?  What community?  I WANT TO GO HOME!"  She screamed at him.  She just wanted to get out of the chair and kill him.  Then she remembered her power.  Normally she wouldn't resort to it, because it seemed so unfair, but this was different.  She tried to reach out with it.  Normally, when she tried to pick something up with her telekinesis, all she had to do was imagine any amount extra arms that could be as big, or strong as she wanted them.  This time though, it wouldn't work.  She couldn't find the arm that she normally found with such ease.  "WHAT DID YOU DO!"  She screeched again.

"We have a small piece of machinery in this area that stops your type of power.  It messes with the frequency that your brain requires to use your form of telepathy.  You are utterly powerless, so you are completely under our control.  That's your first warning to abide by our rules and obey us.  You also have to cooperate for all of our tests."  He said with a blank expression.  Alexia wondered what happened to the smile, hoping that the worst was over.

"Well, I guess I have no choice, so what are the rules?  I mean, I need to know them if I'm going to obey them, right?"  Alexia said, with a hint of sarcasm.  "Let me guess, no using your powers to throw things at other kids?  Or maybe it's that we all have to clean our plates after dinner."

Alexia felt a sharp stinging pain in her leg.  She bit her lip to keep from screaming, drawing blood in her lip.  She hear Mr. Dillenwater laugh darkly, but barely noticed from the pain.  "What.  Is.  This!"  She tried to mutter from closed teeth, barely getting it loud enough for him to hear.

"Oh, I forgot to tell you, we installed a new prototype of a discipline controller in you.  Whenever you do what we don't like, we will give you a certain amount of pain in your leg.  We chose your leg because you can't get away as easy when the pain is in your leg.  Oh, and those aren't the rules.  The rules have to do with the fact that you mainly do whatever we say, you don't try to escape, and you don't get into fights with the others."  He smiled evilly, making sure that she saw it.  Alexia cursed under her breath, the only time she has ever cursed in her life.  Mr. Dillenwater heard and said "Now now, cursing won't help!  If you keep going we just might have to wash your mouth out with soap."  Alexia grimaced.  She was sure that they actually would.

Alexia wanted to start sobbing, but wouldn't let him see her cry.  Instead, she let her anger consume her, as Mr. Dillenwater was pouring over the results of whatever tests that they had put her through.  As she was lying on the table, trying to think of ways to get the leather straps off of her, she felt herself heating up.  It felt kind of like they turned up the heat in the room, not bad, but weirdly hot.  Mr. Dillenwater had sweat starting to appear on his brow, while Alexia had none whatsoever.  To her, it felt like it was about 75 degrees, while it looked like Mr. Dillenwater felt 100.

In the middle of her thoughts of the warmness of the room, Alexia heard crackling.  It sounded like a fire, but it felt no hotter in the room.  She looked down the length of her body.  She gasped loudly, causing Mr. Dillenwater to look over at her and gasp as well.  There were small fires breaking out along the leather straps.  The fire was lightly tugging at her clothes, but not burning them.

"Wow. I didn't think that it would actually work.  If I weren't seeing this with my own eyes I wouldn't believe this."  Mr. Dillenwater said while rummaging in the drawers near her right foot.  His hand returned with a needle that he filled with a cloudy blue liquid from a bottle on the counter.  'Crap, he must be drugging me again.' She thought as she looked at the needle, eying it up.  He rounded on her just as the last strip of leather around her chest was burned away.

Just as Alexia started to get up, he stuck the needle in the vein of her arm, making her drop backwards at his suddenness.  She tried to get back up, but found that the drugs were fast acting.  She dropped back down to the table, hitting with a thud and falling instantly into blackness.

Cheater gasped from what he heard from Dillenwater's current thoughts.  The new girl had been experimented on!  She was already telekinetic, and yet they decided to use some weird stuff on her to see if they could give her any new powers.  They drugged her so heavily that she wouldn't wake up for hours, and yet she woke up hours early.  She was like nothing that had ever happened at the School before.

Cheater decided that he would try to read any other minds to see if any of the other scientists had new developments for him.  Mr. Dillenwater had realized that he was in his mind and stopped thinking about it.  He then tried the stupid lab techs that they had hired here just because they needed someone who wouldn't tell the law on them.  They knew nothing of the situation.  He gave up and decided to go to sleep.

He went into the bathroom that adjoined to his bedroom, showered and brushed his teeth.  He washed his face and put on his pajamas, which were shorts.  He walked slowly to his bedroom and slipped into bed.  He lay in bed for about an hour, watching TV and dozing, but not fully falling asleep.  That was when he heard the scream.

~~

Alexia woke up in a strange room.  It was a nicely decorated room with blue walls, white furniture, and a blue and white bedspread with swirls of the two colors.  It was beautiful.  She was lying in a huge bed with a canopy top.  She slowly got up.  She was thinking about what happened to her before she passed out from the drugs.  She gained a new power.  She could control fire!  At the time, she didn't think that she had been doing it, but now she had to be sure.

She wondered if she could control it now.  She thought about a small ball of fire resting in the palm of her hand.  She thought about it for a couple of seconds, before she felt sudden heat on her hand.  She looked and there was a small fireball sitting on her hand. She let out a little scream but quickly quieted herself.  The quickly extinguished it and decided to go and explore.  She went around the room and noticed three doors.

She looked into the first one and found a huge walk in closet, filled with clothes her size and style.  Her style was with soft colors and comfortable clothes.  She didn't go for flashy, just comfy.

The next door she opened was a bathroom decorated white and blue to match the bedroom.  It had a walk in shower and a small bathtub as well as the common necessities.  She left it and went back to the bedroom.

She went through the other door and found herself in a small apartment. It had a clean and modern black and white kitchen; a small study area near what she guessed was the front door, and a regular living room with a moderately big TV and brown furniture.  She explored the apartment and discovered that it had all the necessities for a person to live.  The fridge was full of her favorite foods, there were toiletries under both sinks, and in the closet she found a combination washer/dryer, stacks of blankets and towels, and cleaning items.

There was one thing that she hadn't checked yet, perhaps because she was afraid of what she might find.  Dillenwater had said that there was a community, and she was afraid to discover what kind of community that might be.

She walked slowly to the door and pulled it open.  She looked out to see a big commons area, like you might see outside a dorm room.  It was full of big comfy chairs, games and fun stuff.  There were also doors leading to what she guessed were the other kids' rooms.  There were about 12 rooms in all, but she didn't think that they were all full.  After all, Dillenwater said that there only five other kids there, but she couldn't trust a word out of the man's mouth.

She walked completely out of her own apartment, not bothering to lock the door, and noticed that there were three people sitting in the middle of the room, there were two girls and a boy.  The girls were sitting on what looked like a comfy couch, and the boy was sitting on a beanbag chair facing the girls.  As Alexia shut the door, their heads snapped over to her.  She walked slowly over to them, and sat down on a small chair facing all of them.

"Um, hi?"  Alexia said with a bit of a question at the end of her sentence.

"Hello!  My name is Trixie!"  The first girl, a little blonde that looked about 13, spoke.  She looked like a pixie, which was how Alexia decided she would remember her name.  "I control plants!"  She smiled at Alexia and looked over to a potted plant that was placed near the TV.  "Watch this."  She pointed at the plant.  It was a leafy green plant with no flowers.  It suddenly grew about 5 inches and sprouted bright pink flowers.

"Wow! That's amazing!"  Alexia exclaimed.  It really was amazing.  The plant was now swaying in an invisible breeze.

"Nice job Trixie!"  The boy said as he walked over and gave her a high-five.  He looked about 14, had an average build and light brown hair.  He smiled at Alexia.  "My name is Jared.  I can create almost anything out of dirt, anything but food that is.  Also, nothing that’s too complicated, I have to know a lot about something to make it."  He smiled again.  He then grabbed a handful of the dirt from the flower pot.  After holding it for a few seconds before he smiled and held out his hand.  The dirt had disappeared.  In its place was a small ring.  He handed it to Alexia.  "Here you go!" he said happily.

"Thanks, um... Jared."  Alexia said after a brief hesitation.  She slowly slipped the ring on her finger. It was silver with small diamonds embedded around then entire band.  She looked at the other girl.  She looked like she was about eleven.  "Who are you?"  Alexia asked her quietly.  The girl looked sad and was looking at the floor.

"That's Jada.  She doesn't talk.  They said that she stopped talking when they brought her here."  Trixie said, a sad look on her face.  "They say that her power is invisibility.  We don't know if she just doesn't like to use it or if they made something to stop her from using it.  We might never know."  Trixie finished.

'Wow' Alexia thought.  She wondered what they could have done to this girl to make her retreat into her own little world.  She wasn't left to her own thoughts for long because another boy walked up.  This one looked about 16, around her age.  He had dark brown hair, almost black, and had an average build.  He had sparkling green eyes that shined as he looked at the group.  He was beautiful to say the least.

"Hi. My names Greg, but you can call me Cheater. Oh and before you ask, back home people always thought that I was cheating because of my power.  My power is telepathy, and I know that yours is telekinesis.  Right?"  He said as he gave Alexia a knowing look at the last part.  'Darn mind reader, he must know about my fire power.'  Alexia thought to herself.  Then she realized that if he didn’t know before he did after she thought about it.  "Oh, and Alexia, yes I do know."  He said quietly to her, so that the others could not hear.

"Um...  Ok, what about this place?  What happens here?  Like, what do they do to us?  Or what do they expect from us?"  Alexia said.  She was worried about breaking the bigger rules because of her stupid leg.

Cheater's eyes widened at her thoughts.  "Oh, well mainly they will come and get you if you are scheduled for any tests, and they make sure that you don't try to starve or hurt yourself.  They mainly want you to be healthy for the tests.  Sometimes, they will stop you from eating for a while to see what happens, and stuff like that.  We never know what to expect."  He said, getting softer by the end.

"Oh, well, who else lives here?  Other than us I mean.  Dillenwater said that there were a few of us here."  Alexia asked, curious now.  She wanted to know how much she was lied to about.

"Well, there are six of us total, including you."  Jared told her.  "There are three girls and three boys. There are you, Jada, and Trixie for the girls, and the guys are me, Cheater and Adam.  Adam is currently gone for tests.  He'll probably be here in a little bit.  I think they were just doing routine tests."  By this time, everyone was sitting in chairs around the TV, but no one was watching it.  Instead they were all focused on the conversation, and the locked door to the labs.  They were waiting to see what was done to Adam.

After a while, the small-talk ceased and they all decided to watch TV.  The current show on was something to do with a bunch of kids during school.  It was stupid and boring because most of the stuff that was happening to them doesn't happen in real life.  Then again, Alexia never thought that something like this could happen in real life.  She thought that this kind of thing could only happen in books and movies.  It was almost ironic.

Alexia's thoughts were interrupted by the door to the lab being thrown open and a guy was pushed through before it was shut again.  The boy looked about eleven.  He was small and had blonde hair.  He was small and looked kind of scared.  He quickly ran over to the couch and into Alexia's arms.  She was surprised but quickly recovered and hugged him back.  The boy started to cry and she soothed him by rubbing his back and rocking him back and forth.

Alexia could tell that Cheater was reading his mind by the sad look on his face.  Alexia quietly asked him where the boy's room was now that he seemed to be asleep, and Cheater picked him up and took him to it.  Alexia followed quietly, just in case the boy woke up and needed her again.  When they got to his door, Alexia opened it to find an apartment with a layout exactly like hers.  The only thing different about their two rooms was that the color theme was black and green instead of blue like hers.  They took Adam into his room and tucked him in, leaving the bathroom light on in case he was afraid of the dark.

They left his bedroom and went into the living room of the apartment.  Alexia stopped Cheater before he could get to the door.  "What did they do to him to make him cry like that?"  She said urgently, yet quietly.  The look on Cheater's face told her the worst.

"Well, Adam has the power of healing.  He can unconsciously heal himself when he gets hurt, almost instantly.  When he does, it causes him a lot of pain.  Almost more pain than if the injury were left alone.  For his tests, they like to hurt him and see how long it takes him to heal back.  When he comes back like this, it means that they had an injury session.  I only went into his mind long enough to see if it was true.  I really don't want to know all of the details."  Cheater said in one breath, as if he had been holding it in for a long time.

"Do the others not know?"  Alexia said softly.

"No. Adam doesn't want anyone but me to know.  I shouldn't have told you.  I think that will be okay since he went to you when he got back anyway."  Cheater matched her tone.  He motioned for her to follow him out of the room.  She did and they ended up out in the main room with all of the others.

"Well, I for one am so tired I could sleep for DAYS!"  Trixie said excitedly, emphasizing the word days.

"Agreed, to bed everyone!"  Jared said, as he and Trixie went to doors that were next to each other, right across the room from Alexia's room.  Jada quietly followed them.  She went to a door that was next to Adam's room.

"I think that we ought to turn in too.  I'm really tired, and you probably need the rest."  Cheater said as he turned and started walking away.

"Wait? Where's your room?"  Alexia said curiously.

"Right next to yours."  He said smiling.

"Wait, but how do you know where my room is?" She said suspiciously.

"Mind reader, remember?  You were thinking about where your room is and I picked up on it."  He said, chuckling.

"Oh. It’ll take some time to get used to that won’t it?  Well, good night!"  She said, thinking about how stupid she sounded.

"Night.  See you in the morning."  He said, chuckling again.

Alexia went into her apartment and shut the door.  She grimaced and thought that he must have been laughing at her stupidity.  She wondered why it mattered to her though, normally she didn’t care what people thought about her.

Alexia was hungry and decided to raid the fridge.  She found some pepperoni and nibbled on it as she went around getting ready for bed.  She pulled out some pretty silk pink pajamas and a white shirt.  She finished her pepperoni and got in the shower.  After she was done, she towel dried her hair as much as she could and slipped into bed, too tired to dry her hair.  She was lying in bed for only a few minutes before sleep overtook her.
