Chapter 3

"Well, explain to us more about this so called school. For instance, what kind of tests would you perform there? That's major information that you conveniently forgot to mention last night. I will not let my daughter be tested on like some sort of lab rat." Alexia's mother started the conversation quickly, barely pausing between sentences.

"Our 'school'," Mr. Dillenwater started. Alexia could practically hear the air quotes that he put around the word 'school'. "will mostly do normal tests that you would find at a normal hospital if a person would go there for a check-up. We do things such as blood work, testing blood pressure and reflexes, and even things like endurance. If your daughter were to go, she would live in a small community with other children. It would be much like living in a college, only free. She would receive classes with the other students according to their grade level, and at scheduled times she would be asked to do one of our tests." He finished, looking smug at having answered all of Sharon Lambre's questions without faltering. Alexia's mother looked kind of impressed. In truth, Alexia kind of was too. Most people would falter when answering questions that quickly.

"Mom, that sounds great! I really want to go! Can I go? Please? Please Mom pretty please? " Alexia gasped out excitedly.

Her mother looked slowly at the man sitting near her on the couch. He still had the same smug look on his face. Alexia thought it was kind of creepy. "Is there anything else that you think I should know? How about contact? Can she still call me? What about her friends, can she call them? Or text them, or whatever it is that they do these days. I'm still not so sure about this. I want to be able to check on her any time I want to." She said doubtfully.

"She may call, text, email or even chat with anyone that she wishes as long as it's not during class or one of our tests. Is there anything else that you can think of to ask me? I'll answer any question that you can think of." He said still rather smugly.

Alexia had thought of one. "Yes what about the others, where are they from? How many others are there? How old are they? Are they nice?" She said in almost a single breath, as she was excited again. She couldn't keep the big grin off of her face. She wanted to go to the school with a passion.

"Well, we have five other youths there, ages ranging from 10-17. They come from all over America. Oh, and yes they are very nice. Also before you ask, the school is located on a mountain in West Virginia. We placed it there because the people there aren't very nosy, and because we really didn't think that they would like people with these kinds of talents running loose in America. Remember, ignorance is bliss." He said happily. So it looked like he was back in happy mode. Oh joy. Alexia thought. She also wondered what he meant by the phrase 'ignorance is bliss.' "Anything else you want to know?" He said again.

"Well mom? Can I go?" Alexia asked as soon as he got the last word out.

"I guess it couldn't hurt, after all you can just come home if you don't like it, right?" Her mother said sighing, but Alexia could tell that she was trying to hide the smile that was threatening to break loose.

"OH MY GOSH I HAVE TO TELL TAMII!" Alexia squealed. She sprinted up to her room to get the phone as soon as her mother had Mr. Dillenwater at the door. She hurriedly picked up the phone and dialed her best friend. As soon as she picked up, she told her of the events of the evening.

"I'm going to miss you so much!" Tamii sniffled into the phone.

"Me too Tamii! But you know that I can't miss this opportunity! It may never come around again..." Alexia said with a mixture of sadness and excitement.

"I know, just text me as much as you can, and as often as you can. Ok?" Tamii sniffled again.

"I will, I promise. Now I've got to go, I'm leaving tomorrow and I've got to get packing. I don't even have my suitcase out, and I don't even know what I need to take! I'll message you as soon as I get settled in there, ok?" Alexia was starting to cry now.

"Ok, I'll talk to you soon. Bye. I'll miss you." Tamii said with a sniffle.

"I'll miss you too... Bye." Alexia said in between sobs.

She hung up her phone and went to her closet to dig out her old black and white suitcase. It had a 70's type flower pattern on it and was the biggest one that she owned. She was also taking the matching medium sized one and a small carry-on. She filled the biggest suitcase with clothes. The second one was filled halfway with clothes, but also carried her laptop and iPod. The carry-on was holding all of her make-up and beauty supplies. She was also taking her favorite pillow that was shaped like a cats head. She placed it on top of the laptop and iPod. She was all packed.

Alexia was very tired after waking up so early. She changed into pajamas and plopped down onto the bed. Her last semi-coherent thought before sliding into dreamland was that Mr. Dillenwater never actually confirmed that she could leave whenever she wanted.
