Chapter 2
Alexia woke up earlier than usual, around 8:00, and raced down stairs to ask her mother about calling Mr. Dillenwater. Â When her mother finally deemed it too early to be calling him, she went back upstairs to do things that she had neglected in her rush to get downstairs. Â Things like brushing her hair, her teeth, getting dressed, and so on.
Alexia had to do everything that she could think of to keep herself busy for the next two hours, until ten oâclock, when her mother said that calling would be acceptable. Â She watched T.V., played the computer, read, and even cleaned her room. Â Yet as soon as the timer was up, she raced downstairs yet again to see about calling.
"If I say yes, will you stop asking me every five minutes?" Â Her exasperated mother said laughingly.
"Yes, yes, yes! Where did you put his card?" Â Alexia asked as her mother barely even got the words out of her mouth.
"It's on the fridge dear." Â Her mother called as she headed into the living room with a plate heaped with toast and bacon that she must have made earlier and was just now getting to eat.
Alexia sprinted to the fridge and almost smacked into it in her excitement. Â She quickly snatched it out from under the magnet that was holding it and dug out her phone. Â As soon as she pulled it out, she dropped it and had to pick it back up. Â She finally got a good hold on it and punched in the number on the card, her fingers almost trembling with excitement. Â A man answered, and she recognized the voice of Mr. Dillenwater. "Hello. Â This is Norman G. Dillenwater, how may I help you?" Â He asked her cheerfully before he realized who it was on the other phone.
"Mr. Dillenwater this is Alexia Lambre, you know the girl you met yesterday, and I wanted to talk to you about your research lab/school. Â I'm really interested and would like to set up some way that my mother and I could get to learn more about it." Â She said in a nervous yet professional voice. Â She was terrified that he could have changed his mind overnight and decided not to let her go after all.
"Ah, I was hoping you would call. Â I would love for you and your mother to meet with me to discuss this. Â Would you like me to come there, or should we go out to a restaurant?" Â He said happily. Â At this point, Alexia didn't think that he had any other mode but happy.
"I think that you should come here." Â Alexia said quickly. Â She didn't want to talk about this in public where other people could hear them. Â She still lived here, so she didn't want anyone to know about her talents, it might scare them. Â So if this didn't work out, she had to have a backup plan.
"Ok then, what time would you like for me to be there?" Â He asked her in his same happy voice.
"I would say around six, that's when mom normally has diner ready. Â We'll talk more then." She said, happy that this was more than likely going to work out.
"Ok Miss Lambre, I will see you then. Â Have a nice day!" Â He said simply and then hung up.
'Well that was almost rude, wasn't it?'  Alexia thought, but didn't dwell on it as she went to tell her mother.  They both sat down to decide on a dinner that was nice but not too fancy for the occasion.  They did want to make a good impression.  After about twenty minutes of a funny debate in which they ended up on the floor laughing, her mother's idea of spaghetti won.  It would have a side of rolls with or without garlic.  They were going to start on it in a few hours, around four o' clock.  Until then, Alexia decided to call and update her best friend Tamii.  Tamii was the same age as her and they became friends the day that Alexia moved into the area in first grade.  She was the only person that was nice to Alexia and still is. She was also the only person other than her mom to know about her power.
"Hello?" Â Tamii asked sleepily when Alexia called her.
"Tamii how can you still be sleepy? Â Itâs almost noon! Â You should have already been up by now! Â Today is a big day! Â A huge day! Â A MONUMENTAL DAY!" Â Alexia said excitedly into the phone as her friend yawned.
"Sorry, sorry geez! Â You know I can't function on a Saturday until after 12:30! Â But what happened? Â Did you call the guy already? Â Of course you did what am I saying? Â But what did he say? Â Are you going to go, stay what? Â I need to know?" Â Tamii must have woken up because she was jabbering away like she normally did.
"Okay calm down! Â Your right, I did call him, Â but we don't know anything yet because he's coming to dinner tonight so we can 'discuss it'." Â She made sure that you could hear the air quotes.
"You had better call me as soon as he leaves, even if it's three in the morning. Okay?" Â Tamii asked.
"Yes mother dearest, I will call you." Â Alexia said jokingly. Â She hear her mother calling her from downstairs, it was already time to cook the food. Â "I've got to go cook, but I promise I'll call you Tam. Bye."
"Bye, and don't forget to call me!" Â Tamii said as she hung up. Â Alexia hurried downstairs to help her mother get ready.
While her mother cooked the food, Alexia set out the good china on top of the good lace table cloth. Â She folded the napkins and put out the butter and everything else that the two of them could think of. Â They put cushions on the chairs, since they could be in there a while talking. Â At about 5:50 all of the food was done. Just as they put the last plate of bread on the table, the doorbell rang.
They answered it to find Mr. Dillenwater smiling back at them. Â "Hello!" Â He said enthusiastically.
Her mother simply smiled back and said "Shall we eat?" and led them to the dining room where the food was laid out. Â The three of them dug in and there were smiles all around, since her mother was a good cook.
"Well, now that we have eaten, we should probably discuss your future." Â Mr. Dillenwater said nodding at Alexia. Â He was currently sitting back in his chair, looking stuffed.
"Okay, do you want to stay in here or should we go into the living room?"  Alexia asked as politely as she could.  Even though she had been excited all day, she was suddenly nervous, she just wasn't sure why she was.  There was no reason to be, or was there? No, she was acting silly, she decided, she must just be nervous at the thought of leaving her home.
"Let's go into the living room, we will be more comfortable in there and I'm not sure how long this is going to take." Â Mr. Dillenwater said simply, as if he said this every day.
That was when they got up to go to the living room . As she crossed the threshold, Alexia had the strangest feeling that she was crossing the divider between her old life and her new life. Â It seemed as if it were time for a change.
