Chapter 18
Alexia awakened on a rigid hospital bed, her mind reeling, but she still felt extremely groggy. There were two male scientists leaning over her, and they seemed like they were actually doing tests. Alexia cleared her throat, and both of them jumped. She resisted the urge to laugh. âA little bit jumpy are we? Are you scared of the girl that you have strapped to a hospital bed? A very uncomfortable hospital bed I might add, it needs a bit more cushion.â She said with a soft sigh, she wasnât even kidding either, it definitely needed more cushion. She took the opportunity to look around the room, and noticed that it was the same room she was knocked out in.
âYouâre awake? How is that even possible?â One scientist asked, turning to the other one. âWe still had about an hour worth of time left before she was supposed to even begin to wake up.â He walked over to the wall and pressed a button. Alexia flinched for a moment before she realized that it wasnât the one to set off the pain in her leg. She relaxed a little bit, until she heard the scientist speak into the intercom on the wall near the button. âSir, sheâs already awake.â She heard a male voice coming from the box on the wall, but she couldnât make out what was being said, but the other voice sounded vaguely familiar. âI donât know sir. Would you like to come see it for yourself?â The other voice spoke again, and then the man walked back to Alexia.
He started checking her pulse, blood pressure, and heart rate. She really wanted to fight him, but she wasnât in the mood to find out what might happen to her if she did fight him. It probably wouldnât end too good for her. So instead she just lay quietly on the hospital bed, wishing that she could at least readjust the pillow that her head was laying on to make herself more comfortable.
After about a minute of the two scientists checking all of Alexiaâs vitals, the door was thrown open and Dillenwater strutted in. He actually strutted too, not walked like a normal person, which Alexia thought was hilarious. She didnât dare laugh though, the leg gadget they used on her was much too painful to experience for that.
âAh, so you are awake.â Dillenwater said with a small smirk. âI donât know how youâre already awake, but no matter. We already have your experiment finished, as well as most of the tests we were performing. All that we need to do now is draw some blood for testing.â He drew a needle out of one of the cabinets in the room. âIâll be nice and make it quick for you.â Alexia nodded, and he quickly drew her blood, even adding gauze over it like they do in hospitals. That was very unlike Dillenwater to be that nice.
âNow that youâre here, I want to ask you a question. I thought that this was going to be a school. What happened to that idea? I mean, I know that the kids did classes before I got here, so what happened to them? Youâre doing this to us, so we might as well get an education out of it if weâre going to be here. I may not like school very much, but I also donât want to be stupid.â  She said somewhat confusedly.
âOh, that. Well, after you arrived here, we wanted to move all of our recourses into testing you, not wasting any time or money on teaching you things. Besides, making the lot of you smarter than you are might hurt us in the end.â Dillenwater said with yet another one of his smirks. The man sure liked to smirk.
âHow so?â Alexia asked, fearing that she already knew the answer.
âWell, if youâre too smart then you might figure out things that we donât want you to know. But mainly, we just donât want to waste the time and manpower on it when we can use both for more experiments and tests. Why educate you when weâre just testing you anyway? Itâs a complete waste of time and money.â He said with a sick smile. âAt least it isnât a smirk this time.â Alexia thought to herself. She felt outrage at his reactions to her questions. Like she had said before, she didnât like school, but she wanted the normality of classes and homework. It would make her life seem a little bit crazy, but it would feel more like normal.
She wanted to ask if she could at least teach the younger kids something, but she knew that it wouldnât be worth the trouble it would cause her to ask. So she decided to ask a simpler, yet more important question. âSo what happens to me now? Are you going to do more tests or what?â She asked, hoping profusely that they were finished with her.
âYes, now youâre finished. But before we send you back, I have to tell you about the latest experiment. We have added substances to your body that should add an extra ability as well as your others. We have no idea what it will be yet though. It really could be anything.â He said, his face scrunching up in thought. Alexia thought that smoke would come out of his ears he was thinking so hard. âDonât hurt yourself.â She thought. She wanted to say it out loud but she knew better than to say that. That would get her in trouble for sure, and he would surely make the pain come back to her leg.
âSo, you can tell me that I am going to get a new ability, but you canât tell me what it is? Are you sure that you have no idea? This would be a great thing for me to know, to prepare myself.â She said quietly, trying not to sound too rude.
âWell, we donât know. This time we truly have no idea whatsoever. I could tell you a lot of theories, but they wouldnât help you at all, so I see no point. If anything, they might just get your hopes up. I am a horrible person, but I wouldnât want to get your hopes up now would I?â Dillenwater said with a smirk. The way he looked at Alexia, it made her feel like he knew about their plan to escape. That worried her, but she couldnât let it show in front of him. She kept her expression as neutral as she could.
âSo, are you going to send me back now?â She asked pointedly. She didnât want to be too rude and risk their machine on her, but being strapped to a hard hospital bed had gotten to be very uncomfortable. Besides, she wanted to get back to the others to put their escape plan into motion. They really needed to get moving on it.
âYes, I guess that we can let you go now.â He replied casually. That instantly put Alexia on edge. Casual probably wasnât a good thing for Dillenwater to be, in fact, it was probably a bad thing. That made her very worried, and for good reason considering who was in charge of her at the time.
âWhat? What are you thinking?â She asked quickly, both a little confused and a little scared. She knew only too well what the horrible monster of a man in front of her could do to a person.
âOh, I was just thinking of the different ways that we could get you back. There are many possibilities you know.â He said with another wide smirk. âDo you have any preferences?â
âYes, I prefer to walk back on my own without any drugs or rope. That would be amazing if you could arrange that.â She said sarcastically, knowing that he would either drug her or tie her up, there was no way he would just let her walk away from the lab.
âWe both know that I have to restrain you in some way. So pick your poison, drugs or bonds.â He said with another nasty looking smirk. Alexia grimaced and decided on the lesser of the two evils. She would rather be awake and tied up than drugged and completely unaware of her surroundings any day.
âIâll take the bonds.â She said quickly, before he could change his mind about giving her a choice in the matter.
âOk then, bring me the things we need to tie her up.â He quickly told one of the scientists. The man quickly left the room to retrieve the things that Dillenwater requested.
âSo, how is this going to work?â Alexia asked quietly. She really hoped that he wouldnât have strange men hold her arms again. She really didnât like for the creepy guys to touch her, even if it was only her arms they would be touching.
âYouâll see.â He said with an evil grin.  About that time, the door opened again and the scientist walked through pushing a wheelchair through in front of him. âPlease tell me that heâs not going to do that.â Alexia thought, hoping that she was wrong. âSee? Weâre going to be nice and let you ride in this wheelchair! Isnât that nice of us?â He said with a sneer.
âBut why would you want to do that? I can walk perfectly fine on my own! Please just let me walk down there, I havenât been getting enough exercise lately anyway.â She said, trying to change his mind. She tried, but at the same time she knew that it was a waste of her time. He was doing this just for the fun of tying her to a chair.
âItâs fun! Why wouldnât I have fun when I have the chance to?â He said with a grin. It was a very disturbing grin, and Alexia wanted to knock it off of his face, it was such a disgusting expression.
âOk, well can we just get it over with? Just tie me up and letâs leave so I can get off of this stupid hospital bed. You really should replace it you know. Itâs as hard as a rock. Or, you could at least replace the pillow for me. That would help quite a bit too. Iâm going to have to lie on this bed for hours at a time, so could you at least make it more comfortable for me?â Alexia asked honestly. She hoped that they would at least take her seriously. She really wanted the bed replaced, it certainly wasnât very comfortable.
âWe might think about it, if youâre lucky.â He said, this time with no smirk or even a cruel smile, his face was completely devoid of emotion. âThat was weird, and very unlike him.â Alexia thought. âMaybe that means heâll actually get a new bed for me.â âBut now we will take you back. After I release you from the bed, you had better not get up. You know what we can do to you if you disobey us, so I will tryst you not to.â Alexia nodded slowly, happy at the prospect of sitting up and stretching her stiff body.
A moment later, Alexia was released from the stiff hospital bed. She relished the change to sit up and stretch, happily moving her arms above her head and stretching her back out. Immediately after she put her arms back down to her sides, she was grabbed roughly and pushed into the wheelchair. Her arms were pushed onto the armrests, and a rope was wrapped tightly around her torso. âHey!â She protested loudly.  âI would have gotten in the chair on my own!  You didnât have to be so forceful!â  She grumbled loudly, making sure that they could hear her.
âOops, well, too bad now.â Dillenwater said cheekily. âNow letâs tie your feet to the chair too!â They somehow managed to tie each of her feet to the individual foot rests on the wheelchair.
âAre you done now?â She said sarcastically, wishing that they would say yes so they could just take her back.
âYeah, I guess. Thereâs nothing else for us to do, so we can take you back now.â He said, stepping behind her and grabbing the handles of the wheelchair. Alexia couldnât see him without turning her head at an odd angle, so she didnât even try to. One of the scientists opened the door for them, and he pushed her through. They ended up in the same eerily white hallway that they had brought her through the first time. Except this time, it was just she and Dillenwater, no other scientists holding her back or anything. Alexia could try something, but then they would probably be much more careful around her, so she wanted to save all of the surprise she had in her for when they tried to escape.
After turning the corner twice, they arrived at the door back to the common room and apartments. Alexia knew thatâs what it was because it looked the same on both sides. Dillenwater stepped around it and opened the door, pushing the wheelchair through it and shutting the door behind it, leaving Alexia tied to the chair. âReally dude? Really? Thatâs just not right.â She thought with a sigh.
