Chapter 14
The next few days went by in a blur for Cheater.  He would wake up, get dressed, eat, and then go sit next to the door to the labs waiting on news of Alexia.  He would leave his power tuned in to whoever was in the room with Alexia at the time.  However, he would only listen to their thoughts, not delving fully into their minds.  That would require too much energy, energy that he didnât have to waste. Jada stayed with him the entire time he sat by the door.
Ever since Alexia went into her coma he felt exhausted. Â He was so worried about her that he hardly ate or slept. Â The only reason he did either of those things at all was to appease Jada. Â She still hadnât said a word, but she would send Cheater a sharp look, smile, or thought his way to let him know what she meant. Â Every day she would come and sit next to him during his unspoken vigil next to the door. Â After a few hours, around lunchtime, she would give him a stern look which he took to mean that he was supposed to eat. Â They would both return after they had eaten and it would happen again around dinnertime. Â They would both go back to their apartments around ten oâ clock, Cheater falling asleep instantly from exhaustion at using his power. Â The same cycle would happen the next day.
This cycle continued until the fifth day after Alexia went into her coma.  Cheater woke up with a feeling of anticipation.  Something was going to happen, he just knew it.  He just wasnât sure whether it was a good thing or a bad thing though.  He also was worried even more about Alexia.  He desperately hoped that she would be okay, that maybe this would be the day that she woke up.  Cheater was so worried that he skipped breakfast, going straight to the door to the lab.  He slid down the wall and leaned his head against it.  Not long passed until Jada sat gently down next to him.  Even in her sadness she still looked calm and delicate.  Cheater smiled sadly at her, the young girl had turned into his rock to lean on. He felt horrible putting her in that situation but she seems happy to help in any way.
âI feel like something is about to happen today Jada.  Iâm not sure what itâs going to be, but I can just feel something about to happen.  Can you feel it?â  He asked her quietly.  She slowly nodded with a strange expression on her face. It looked like she was torn between excitement, curiosity, and worry.
âWell, Iâm just going to have to listen really closely today. Â Iâm getting the feeling that itâs going to have something to do with Alexia.â Â He whispered. Â She nodded mutely. Â He smiled sadly at her in return and then tuned in on the man who was woman who was currently watching Alexia. Â Nothing happened during her shift and soon it was a manâs turn to watch her. Â That was when it happened.
----------
The blackness. It was starting to lighten. It was now grey, no longer black. Alexia could see only grey. She could now feel her arms and legs more now, her feet and her hands as well.  She could tell that she was laying down on something.  Something cold.  She wondered why it was cold.  Then she realized that she was cold.  She didnât feel like she was floating anymore.  It felt like there were weights on her eyelids.  As hard as she tried she couldnât open them.  She tried to listen for sounds, but heard none.  Just stillness.  The grey was starting to lighten.  The weight on her eyelids was beginning to lessen. She wondered why.  Then she realized that she could feel her fingers the most.  She slowly opened and closed them once. It tired her and she stopped thinking for a little while longer, the grey around her darkening a little more.
----------
At first the manâs shift was uneventful. Â He was just thinking random thoughts, but then a thought made Cheater sit up straight and gasp loudly. Â âOh my gosh!â Â He exclaimed, making Jada jump and look at him questioningly, but Cheater didnât answer. Â He was already delving deeper into the mind of the man. Â Cheater let the manâs senses overwhelm him. Â The whole reason for this was simple: Alexia had moved. Â It was only a simple movement, just her fingers closing and re-opening, but it started a whole wave of things.
Almost instantly, the guard ran to the wall and slammed his hand on a button and said quickly âThereâs movement!â Â His voice was gruff, his tone excited. Â Not two minutes later, four scientists in white coats rushed into the room, followed quickly by Dillenwater.
âReport! Now!â Â Dillenwater yelled to the frenzied scientists who were running tests. Â âFirst I want to hear from the guard on duty. Â What happened?â Â He asked, no longer yelling. Â The man who guarded Alexia at the time stepped forward.
âIâm the guard sir. Â I was just watching the subject, as you ordered sir, when the subjectâs handâs moved. Â Its fingers curled like they were being stretched after a long time of disuse.â Â He said nervously, stepping backwards at the end. Â Cheater could feel his fear and almost felt bad for him. Â But then he remembered where the man worked and his sympathy faded.
âOf course it was like stretching! Â She hasnât moved a bit in four days! Â Also, I already knew that I had ordered it! Â I didnât need reminded! Â Iâm not an imbecile unlike you!â Â Dillenwater screeched. Â Cheater felt the young guardâs fear like it was his own, but after yearsâ practice he knew better. Â Dillenwater raised his fist to strike the man, but just as the blow was about to land, a feminine voice sounded from behind them.
âNow, now, now, whatâs going on here? Â Dillenwater! Â Lower your fist. Â The man did fine heâs just terrified of you! Â As he should be. Â Whatâs your name?â Â Mrs. Jomen said calmly. Â The guard was still terrified, but now he was hiding it better, Cheater noticed. Â The man stepped forward again.
âM-my names Josh.â Â He said quietly, becoming even more terrified at being addressed by the head of the school. Â Inwardly Cheater was wondering why Mrs. Jomen was being so nice.
âWell Josh, you can leave now. Â Report back to your superior. Â Goodbye.â Â Mrs. Jomen dismissed him quietly. Â He started to leave the room and Cheater began to panic. Â He had to switch minds fast. Â He latched onto Dillenwater and felt the manâs anger almost instantly. Â âWhatâs his problem?â Â He thought to himself. Â His unasked question was soon answered.
âWhy did you just let him go? Â He was an idiot and he disrespected me.â Â Dillenwater said, sulking like a child who had just gotten his candy stolen.
âHush Dillenwater. I was intending to let you kill him later.â Â Mrs. Jomen said with a smirk. Â Cheater could feel Dillenwater smirking. Â âYes I thought that you would enjoy that. Â But that has to wait until later. Â First we have to deal with the girl. Â I want a report. Â Now.â She stated, never raising her voice. Â Almost instantly a woman in a lab coat stepped forward.
âYes Mrs. Jomen. Â Well the girlâs vital signs are stronger. Â Her brain activity level has raised.â Â The woman said, stepping back.
âAnd what does that mean?â Â Dillenwater asked, totally confused.
âImbecile! Â It means the girl could be trying wake up! Â Donât you understand what this could mean?â Â Mrs. Jomen said angrily, the first emotion that Cheater saw on her face the whole time.
âUm, not really noâ¦â  Dillenwater said, taking a step back.  The man was scared!  Cheater could feel it.  How could such a big man be scared of small Mrs. Jomen?  But then he realized.  Mrs. Jomenâs game wasnât physical.  She caused pain and suffering through others.  And it seemed like she was winning.
âYou idiot! Â If she wakes up soon then we only have to wait a few days before we can do âexperiment C.â Â Just one day Dillenwater! Â One day before we can continue with experiments! Â Then we only have two experiments before âexperiment C!â Â Now do you see why this is great news?â Â She said looking a strange combination of angry and blissful. Â Angry at Dillenwaterâs stupidity, and happy that Alexia could wake up.
âOh, ok sorry.â Â Dillenwater said, taking another step back. Â Just then one of the scientists had a sharp intake of breath, waving Mrs. Jomen over.
âLook! Â Look! Â Her brain activity level is normal, her vital signs are all normal! Â She could wake up any second now!â Â The male scientist said excitedly. Â âOf course,â Cheater thought irritably. Â âTheyâre only excited to do more experiments on her.
âOh my! Â How soon do you think?â Â Mrs. Jomen asked, sounding almost human in her excitement.
âAnytime Mrs. Jomen. Â Anytime at all.â
----------
The weight on her eyelids was almost gone. Â Her arms and legs didnât feel as heavy. Â She could slightly move them. Â Now she could move them but she didnât. She concentrated on moving her eyes. She could twitch them under her eyelids, but they wouldnât move. Less weight on them now, time to try again.
----------
âAre you sure? Â Sheâs not doing anything but twitching her fingers and eyelids.â Â Dillenwater grumbled, more to himself than anyone else.
âShut it.â Â Mrs. Jomen said simply. Â âLook!â
Dillenwater turned and it took Cheater a minute to realize what they were trying to flutter open! Â âWell? Is she going to wake up?â Â He asked impatiently after a minute of watching Alexiaâs inner struggle.
âYes, it may take a little bit, but I am sure that she will wake up today.â Â The scientist stated. Â Alexiaâs eyelids were fluttering quicker now, threatening to open.
âHow long?â Â Mrs. Jomen asked calmly.
âAnytime.â Â Came the reply.
âGood.â Â All eyes turned to Alexia, whose eyelids were still fluttering, attempting to open.
âWhen? Â Iâm tired of this!â Â Dillenwater grumbled loudly.
âAs I said anytime!â Â The scientist said loudly.
âCanât you just make her wake up?â
âNo, of course I canât Iâm not mag-â He was cut off by a voice that was rough and scratching from disuse.
âWhatâs going on?â
