Chapter 12

Chapter 12

Alexia woke up the next day feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.  She sat up in bed and looked at the clock on the bedside table.  It was around ten o’clock.  She didn’t really feel like getting a shower, so she just put her hair into a sloppy bun.  Then she slipped on some jeans and a plain blue tee-shirt.

After that, Alexia went into the kitchen and poured a bowl of cereal.  She didn’t really feel like cooking either.  In fact, she didn’t feel like doing much of anything.  She just felt kind of sluggish.  She really hoped that it wasn’t some kind of drug they put into her while she was sleeping.  They might have after all, she wouldn’t put it past them.  Surely they wouldn’t have drugged her and left, they would want to stay and watch what happens.  They soggy bowl of cereal forgotten, Alexia decided to see if she could still make fire.  If she could, then that meant that they didn’t drug her and she was just being lazy.  If she couldn’t make her fire however, means that something was wrong.  Very wrong.

She stepped away from the very flammable wooden table and closed her eyes.  She snapped her fingers and concentrated on making flames appear on them.  She opened her eyes to check, and nothing.  No flame at all.  She tried again, this time with her eyes open, but there wasn’t even a spark.  At this point, Alexia was beyond mad.  ‘This had better just be a malfunction.  If they drugged me in my sleep they’re going to regret it.  Even if my powers don’t work I can still beat the crap out of them the old fashioned way.’  She thought angrily to herself.

She decided to try one last time.  This time she closed her eyes and concentrated on it more than she had ever concentrated in her entire life.  She tried to use her anger to fuel the fire.  It didn’t work.  Alexia could actually feel something blocking her power.  It felt like it was just bottled up inside of her.  That or it was behind a brick wall and couldn’t get out.  It was the worst feeling that Alexia had ever had.  It felt like a part of her had the nerves cut off and was just hanging there.  She knew it was there, she just couldn’t use it. It was like the way she felt when she tried to use her telekinesis.  She really missed that power.

Her head was starting to hurt from concentrating so hard.  It was starting to throb.  She really had to lie down, she felt like she was going to throw up.  She slowly made her way to the couch and slumped onto it.  She closed her eyes and started to give in to the pain.  She started to drift away.  That’s when she barely registered the door banging open.  She ignored the sound and finally drifted off into the blackness.

----------

Cheater woke up around nine o’clock and took a long hot shower.  He ate his breakfast of toast and then sat on his couch to listen for the ‘Whitecoat Daily News’, as he had started to call it, to come on.  He listened to little things like the outcomes of the most recent sports games, to the big things like test results. There was nothing too big at the moment thankfully.

Cheater was just listening to random thoughts for amusement, when he heard a stray thought come from Alexia.  ‘This had better just be a malfunction.  If they drugged me in my sleep they’re going to regret it.  Even if my powers don’t work I can still beat the crap out of them the old fashioned way.’  She was thinking angrily to herself.

‘Drugged in her sleep?’  Cheater thought with panic.  ‘Powers that don’t work?  What’s going on?’  He decided that he would hone in on her thoughts and see what was happening before he rushed in.  Later he would wish that he had just rushed in right then.

Cheater saw Alexia try the fire again through her own eyes.  He was happy that he couldn’t actually feel the emotion she was feeling, because he didn’t think that he would be able to handle it.  He could however, sense the building headache that Alexia was experiencing.  He knew that Alexia probably wouldn’t be able to stand it much longer.  He was just about to go to her when he noticed her walk to the couch.  He broke the connection just as she slumped onto it.

Cheater jumped up and ran to the door, throwing it open in the process with a loud bang.  He sprinted over to Alexia’s door, banging it open also with another crashing bang. That’s when he saw Alexia fall completely unconscious.  “Alexia!  Wake up!”  He yelled, trying to wake her up by shaking her shoulder.  “Alexia?  Please wake up…  Please?”  He whispered sadly, trying one last time to waken her.  When that didn’t work, he muttered a foul word under his breath.  He lay her gently back down on the couch, and softly wrapped a blanket around her shoulders in case she had a chill.

Cheater stood, looking down at Alexia, his hands in fists at his sides.  He couldn’t believe that someone would do this to a person, especially Alexia.  They already test her and experiment on her.  Now they have to do this to her too?

With his hands still balled into tight fists, Cheater left the apartment.  He stomped through the commons room in the middle of the apartments, and went straight up to the connecting door to the labs.  The entire walk over to it he was stared at by Trixie and Jared, who were in the room at the time.  He started pounding on the door yelling “What did you idiots do this time!” He would have followed the sentence with a string of foul words but he didn’t want to say them with children in the room.  It was soon opened by a very confused looking Dillenwater.

“What ARE you doing Greggory?”  The man asked glaring at Cheater.  It took him a minute to remember that Dillenwater was talking about him.  He hadn’t used his name in so long.

“My name is Cheater!”  He yelled into Dillenwater’s face.  “And, I’m talking about Alexia!  What did you do to her now you monster!”  He yelled again.  Dillenwater looked terrified, but not of Cheater.  He didn’t even flinch when Cheater yelled in his face.

“Alexia?  We haven’t done anything to her recently.  What happened?”  He asked quickly.

“What happened?  You should know you liar!  She’s felt sluggish all morning and now she’s lying on her couch unconscious!”  Cheater couldn’t keep himself from yelling the information.  Dillenwater didn’t ask how he knew this, for he knew they had nothing that could block Cheater’s power no matter how hard they tried to develop something that did like they had for Alexia.

“Are you sure she isn’t just asleep, that you aren’t just overreacting?”  Dillenwater said, trying to calm him down.

“Yes I’m sure!  I watched her pass out!  That and the fact that I am not stupid!  Anyone who looked at her right now could tell that she’s not just asleep!  You just don’t want to admit that you did something to her!”  Cheater yelled again, he just couldn’t help it!

“You imbecile!  Do you not understand that we didn’t do this to her?”  Dillenwater said stiffly, through clenched teeth.  “Whatever happened to Alexia, we didn’t do it.  If you don’t believe me, then check my mind and you’ll know that I am not lying.”  Cheater did and discovered that he was telling the truth.  Dillenwater went on.  “That however, doesn’t change the fact that something could be seriously wrong with Miss Lambre.”  He said while pressing a button on his side of the doorway.  He spoke into what Cheater assumed was an intercom.  “I need a stretcher and a few scientists who major in health to the subject area immediately!  That means now people.”  As he was finished speaking a stretcher rolled up with five people in white lab coats following it.

“Ok, it seems that something is wrong with our dear Miss Alexia Lambre.  We’re going to find out what it is.  Let’s go get her.”  He said, shoving past Cheater to go in the direction of Alexia’s apartment.  “Hurry up!”  He called over his shoulder.  Cheater jogged to the front of the line, and got through the door first.

He sat on the edge of the couch near Alexia’s feet and rubbed circles on her leg lightly while they set up the stretcher.  One of the scientists shoved him out of the way when they were ready.  Cheater got up off the floor and sat on one of the chairs out of their way, but he was still watching them intently.

He watched closely as Dillenwater and one of the male scientists picked Alexia up and gently put her down on the stretcher.  Cheater had to admit, they were being very careful with her.  Then again, they might have just not wanted to hurt their ‘special project’ as he sometimes heard them call Alexia.  ‘And they call us the freaks!’  He thought angrily to himself.

The scientists were now strapping Alexia down.  Dillenwater turned to look at Cheater. “ Is there anything weird she did today before this happened?”  Dillenwater asked, putting an emphasis on this.

“Not really . I already told you that she was tired when she woke up.  After that, she made cereal but didn’t eat any of it as you can tell.”  He said pointing to the soggy bowl of cereal on the counter.  He continued.  “She was basically just sluggish.”

“Ok Greggory.”  He nodded to the scientists who were now finished strapping Alexia to the stretcher.  Cheater was angry at the use of his real name but didn’t want to deal with correcting the large, stupid man.  They all walked into the common’s room.  Cheater, who was not even a step behind them, nodded in the direction of the others.  They were all sitting on the couch now, even Jada.  They all looked worried as well, Jada especially.  Cheater would have been amazed by that, except for the fact that he didn’t have time.  He was too worried himself anyway.

The group finally got to the main door and stopped.  Dillenwater pressed a button on the speaker that Cheater had seldom noticed before.  “Open the door you idiot.  We’re in a hurry if you couldn’t tell by the stretcher!”  He said angrily into it.  The door slid open in an instant.  The scientists quickly pushed Alexia’s stretcher in and started going down the hall.  Dillenwater went after them.  Cheater tried to follow as well, but Dillenwater pushed him back.

“Hey!  I want to go too!  Alexia is my best friend! I lov- I need to go with her!”  Cheater said, fumbling on the last sentence.  He tried to push past Dillenwater, to no avail.

“No way kid!  Use your genetic abnormality you little freak.  Find out what’s going on that way if you really want to know.”  Dillenwater said, pushing Cheater out of the way and going through the door.  As soon as he was over the threshold the door slammed shut.  Cheater mumbled another curse under his breath.  He turned and slumped down to the ground with his back to the door.  He had no idea how long he was there for, his head in his hands and barely holding back the tears. He was a man, but that didn’t mean that sadness didn’t affect him too, because it did.

Then he felt a hand gently lie itself on his shoulder.  He turned around and his eyes widened.  He had never expected comfort from the person that the hand belonged to, Jada.
