Chapter 10
Alexia woke up the next morning feeling a little apprehensive about the conversation she was soon to have with Cheater.  She knew that he was the first step to getting everyone ready to go with them, but she was really worried about what he would say. She was sure that he would want to escape, but she wondered what he would say about trying to get Jada to go too. She also knew that there was no way he would leave Jada behind.  She got dressed and cleaned around her apartment, trying to put off the confrontation.  She knew that she couldn't put it off forever though.
Eventually, she got ready to go get Damon. Â She wasn't going to tell Cheater all about everything without him. Â She went to his apartment to make him come with her. Â She knocked on the door and he appeared almost instantly. Â "Morning." Â He said, yawning widely. Â He was already dressed, but she looked in the door and saw that he must have been napping on the couch since there was a blanket and pillow on it.
"Morning, are you ready to go tell Cheater? Â The sooner we tell him, the sooner we can try to get the others to leave with us." Â Alexia said, speaking quickly. Â Now that she got up and moving, she wanted to get this over with as soon as possible.
"Yeah, I'll go get him. Â You go wait in your apartment; we'll show him the room." Â He said, already walking towards Cheater's door. Â Alexia nodded and went inside her own door. Â She made sure her living room was clean, and that the closet wasn't in view of any of the cameras that she could see. Â The room couldn't help them if they got caught. Â She sat down on the couch just as the door opened and the boys stepped through.
"Hey, what's going on?" Â Cheater asked sleepily. Â Alexia couldn't help but grin at him. Only Cheater could make something as serious as this seem silly.
"Well, first, are any of us scheduled to have tests today?" Â Alexia asked hastily, this was the most important thing to know before they started discussing the room. Â They couldn't have Dillenwater or any of the other scientists walking in on them.
Cheater's eyes widened at her thoughts. Â "N-no, not that they have thought about. Â But, what is this I heard from your thoughts about escaping?" Â He said quietly.
Alexia's eyes widened as well. Â She was always forgetting that he could read minds. Â "I wonder when I'm going to finally get used to you reading minds. Â You think that it would be easier here since everyone here has something like that. Â But yeah, we need your help. Â We have a kind of plan how to escape, but not all the details needed, or the cooperation from everyone else. Â But before we tell you, we need to show you the room." Â She said, grabbing his hand and pulling him into the closet with Damon following them close behind. Â She blushed somewhat in the darkness from the feeling of holding his hand. Â Cheater chuckled from his spot beside her. Â 'Stupid mind reader always hearing my thoughts.' Alexia thought to herself. Â More chuckles from beside her, this time more like all-out laughing.
"Just come on!" Â Damon grumbled and pushed past them in the crowded closet. Â He moved some things around and the small door appeared again. Â Cheater stopped laughing. Â Damon went in and waved his hand for Alexia and Cheater to do the same.
------------
Cheater had still been chuckling when Damon pushed past him and Alexia. Â They way he was grumbling made Cheater laugh even more. Â 'Looks like someone is jealous!' Cheater smiled to himself. Â He stopped when Damon opened the door. Â Inside the room, it was filled with what looked like all that they needed to escape the horrible school. Â There were backpacks, food, water, maps, clothes and more.
Alexia and Damon showed him the letter written by Roger Reedom, and showed him the maps and how much stuff they had to use. Â They also were in the process of explaining what they considered a 'plan' to Cheater (He thought that it needed some major work) when Cheater gasped and sat down on the floor of the room. Â The Alexia sat down beside him and tried to ask what was wrong, but he held up a hand and she quieted. Â He had heard a stray thought from Dillenwater's brain about death.
He locked on to the older man's brain, disgusted about his thoughts.  He was thinking about how much pleasure killing a certain person was going to give him.  He hadn't said the name yet, but he kept referring to them as 'he.'  So it must be a boy/man that he was planning to kill.  He saw a picture of the person in his brain.  The man was tall, and had blonde hair, blue eyes and was smiling widely.  He was also wearing a white lab coat.  Cheater wasn't sure why Dillenwater wanted to kill him, he looked nice enough, but then again, that might be why Dillenwater wanted to kill him in the first place. They didnât like nice people working in the labs. They wanted people that would treat the kids horrible and just be in the job for the money.
'Dr. Morgen will die soon. Â I think tonight perhaps. Â He is annoyingly positive. Â I can't wait for him to be gone.' Â He heard Dillenwater thinking to himself. Â It looked like the Morgen fellow would be gone by tomorrow. Â 'Well, one less white coat to deal with, no skin off my bones.' Â Cheater thought to himself. Â He pulled back out of Dillenwater's brain, thoroughly exhausted. Â Alexia was staring at him worriedly.
-----------
Alexia was really worried when Cheater sat down on the floor. Â She tried to ask him what was wrong, but he held a hand up for silence. Â 'He must be reading someone's mind.' She thought to herself. Â She hoped it wasn't too bad of news. Â She sat next to him and put a hand on his shoulder. Â After a while, he leaned further back on the floor, looking extremely tired.
"Cheater, what's going on? Â Whose mind were you reading? Â Is everyone ok? Â Are you ok? Is someone-" Alexia started shooting questions off rapid-fire.
Damon interrupted her quickly. Â "Alexia let the guy get his breath! Â He can't answer all those questions that quickly!" Â He said, laughing somewhat, but still looking just as worried as she was.
Cheater smiled somewhat, although it turned into more of a grimace.  He told them everything that he heard from Dillenwater.  When he said the white coats' name, Alexia gasped.  "He's one of the scientists that are always there for my tests!  I wonder what he did for Dillenwater to plot to kill him."  She wondered to herself. Morgan was nice, but he also took pleasure in her pain, so she had mixed feelings about him.
"Doesn't matter, he'll be gone by tonight. Â But for now, I think that we should talk about getting everyone on our side to escape." Â Damon said, interrupting her thoughts.
"Yeah, your right. Â Cheater, we should start with Jada. Â She's probably going to be the hardest one to convince, especially since she doesn't talk." Â Alexia said. Â Cheater's face darkened at her last sentence. Â "Do you know something about that Cheater?"
"Maybe..." Â He said quietly.
"Will you tell us?" Â She asked just as quietly.
"Yeah, I guess I can.  But you can't say anything to anyone.  Ok?" He said in barely a whisper.  Both Alexia and Damon nodded.  "Ok. Well, Jada came here not long after I did.  She was the second person to get here, me being the first.  After they brought her in, I noticed that she just sat down on the couch and cried.  I went and sat down next to her. This was while she was still talking of course. It was a while before she stopped talking.  Well, I sat down next to her, and" Cheater's voice broke.  He stopped for a moment, as if reliving the moment.  "She told me how they brought her here.
It was before Dillenwater started working here. Â She had been living with her parents and little brother when they showed up. Â They came in and told her family about the 'school' like they did you." Â He nodded to Alexia. Â "Her parents said that they didn't want her going because of her age, and whoever told them about it left their card and said that they would be in touch. Â That night, after the family went to bed, men broke into their house. Â Jada didn't hear the commotion until it was too late. Â She woke up in the middle of it, and turned invisible only for them to throw flour on her to make them able to see her. Â They then tied her up, drugged her, and brought her back here. Â After she woke up, Mrs. Jomen told her that they had killed her entire family that night, her parents and her brother. Everyone would think that she was dead too because they set the house on fire to burn all of the bodies and make it look like a tragic house fire.
Jada decided then that it was all her fault that theyâre dead.  She thinks that she should have stopped them.  She won't listen to me when I tell her that she couldn't have, and that if she had tried that it wouldnât have made a difference. Those men were professionals; they wouldnât have stopped because of her.  She is extremely depressed because of it.  The only reason she eats is because they make her.  She won't turn invisible for anyone because she says that it's because of her power that her family is dead.  The last time I heard her speak was about a week after they brought her here.  I've tried to get her to talk since then, but have never been able to."  Cheater sighed, and leaned back on the floor.
"Well, I guess that we are just going to have to get her to trust us, and hopefully she'll talk eventually. Â It's not like we can leave her here." Â Alexia sighed. Â "We should probably get back into my apartment. Â We shouldn't stay in this room too long; we really don't want them to find us in here." Â She said. Â The boys got up and went through the hole into her closet. Â She followed them and shut the door to the small room after her. Â She moved different things in front of the door, but made it look normal, not like it was hiding something.
When she went into her living room, the boys were sitting on the couch watching TV. Â A superhero show was on. Â 'Lucky them,' Alexia thought. Â 'They have powers just like us, but they don't have to stay locked up in some facility in West Virginia. Â Why can't we be like that?' Â Cheater locked eyes with her, looking understanding. Â He must have heard her.
"You guys want something to eat? Â Or do any of us have someone coming to get us for tests?" Â Alexia said, looking over at Cheater. Â He looked like he was thinking hard, but Alexia knew that he was scanning peopleâs brains.
"Well, someone is coming to get Damon in a few minutes..." Â He said quietly, trailing off at the end. Â Alexia felt bad for Damon, she knew how horrible their tests were.
"Ok, I guess I'll just go to my room. Â Bye guys." Â Damon said, almost whispering. Â He walked out the door and shut it behind him.
"So Cheater, what do you want to eat?" Â Alexia asked.
"Um, can you make grilled cheese?" Â He asked, grinning sheepishly.
"Yes! Â Do you want tomato soup with it?" Â She asked, grinning as well.
"Why ask a silly question like that? Â Of course I do!" Â He laughed.
"Ok, you get the pans, I'll get the ingredients." Â She said, and they went to work.
An hour and one dinner of grilled cheese and tomato soup later, the two of them were sitting on Alexia's couch. Â They talked about silly little things and watched TV until around nine o'clock. Â That was when Cheater said he had to leave and Alexia got ready for bed. Â It had been a long day, and tomorrow might be longer for them. Â Tomorrow was when they had to try and get Jada to talk. Â Alexia fell asleep thinking about ways to do just that.
