Chapter 1

Alexia Lambre had been walking home from school when she noticed that there was a big white van following her.  It had no noticeable windows except for the ones in the front, which were darkly tinted;  it also had a sliding side door.  It looked like one of the vans that are on the news for being used in child abduction cases.  Although Alexia was no longer a child at sixteen years old, she was still worried about being kidnapped.  Sure, she was only a normal looking girl with brown hair and green eyes, but she had a small body and long legs.  So when she thought that the white van was following her, she started to walk a little faster.  She thought that if it didn’t try to stay with her that it wouldn’t be following her; or at least that’s what she had hoped.  She noticed that the van also decided to move faster as well to keep up with her pace.  Every time that she turned a corner, even if it wasn't part of her normal route home, the van turned right after her.  When she started to backtrack up the street away from her house and back the way she had come, the van turned around as well; she finally couldn’t deny that it was following her any longer.  So Alexia decided that if she couldn't lose the van soon, she would slowly make her way to the police station or her house if it was closer.

If she wanted to, Alexia could get rid of the van right then and there.  That was because she something that she could only call a talent and some a curse.  At least, Alexia had always felt that it was more of a curse than anything.  It made her different than other kids; and most teenagers hate to be different. But nevertheless, Alexia had her power, whether she wanted it or not. She had telekinesis; that meant that she could move items with her mind.  She could move something as heavy as a car or as light as a feather.  She would never use that talent though, because it just seemed wrong to her; she didn’t like knowing that she had an upper hand to someone else that they couldn’t possibly beat.  It seemed like a waste of a talent in a way; Alexia was raised to fight only in self-defense, and it didn't seem to her like she needed it just yet.

Alexia turned to look at how close the van was to her and she noticed that it was only about 10 feet from her, and getting closer every minute.  She couldn’t wait any longer; she finally decided to make a run for home.  Her house was about five blocks from where she currently was, and she usually ran more than that in gym class.  The police station was all the way in the heart of town; about a mile away.  She turned the corner and broke into a sprint before the van could see her.  She ran the fastest that she had ever run in her life sprinting full out.  Adrenaline pulsed through her veins, making her speed quicker than she thought possible.  The wind was blowing through her hair, the houses were a blur to her, and the only time she slowed down was when she had to check for cars before crossing the street.  Since the neighborhood wasn't very busy, she didn't get stopped by a car and made it home in record time.

Her mother had arrived home about an hour before her so the door was already unlocked, and Alexia let herself in quickly.  The minute she got in the door she slammed it shut, locked and dead bolted it.  After that was done, she looked out the window slowly to see if the van was in view.  She didn’t see it anywhere so she bolted into the kitchen where she was sure her mother was; she could smell the food being made.

"Mom!" She cried the minute she saw her, "There was a van following me home after school! I think that I lost it though."  She was panting after her fast run so she went to the fridge to get water.  After she pulled a bottle out, she practically collapsed on one of the kitchen chairs that were surrounding the small table.

"WHAT!"  Her mother Sharon Lambre exploded from her place in front of the stove.  She was preparing the family’s evening meal which happened to be steak and mashed potatoes, Alexia's favorite.  Now that she settled down and could breathe easier, Alexia could smell the green beans and corn that were being made with the meal.  "You mean a van followed you all the way home from school?  Are you sure that they weren't going somewhere else and you just so happened to be going the same way?"  Her mother calmly stated now that she had gotten over the initial shock.  She tried in vain to calm her daughter down.

"Of course I'm sure mom!  I went so many different ways that if they weren't following me then they were hopelessly lost.  I even went back toward the school at one point, and they still followed me.  Then they started getting closer and closer to me so I finally decided to run home.  I've already locked the deadbolt so I think that we're fine, but I'm not sure."  She gasped out between drinks of water and breaths.

"Well, we'll call the police and file a report, but I don't expect them to be able to do anything."  Her mother said quietly and whirled around when there was a knock on the door.  "I wonder who that is."  Her mother said thoughtfully, her lips pursed in a frown.  Alexia frowned as well, she didn’t believe in something being a strange coincident, and she didn’t think that it was one that someone was knocking on their door at that moment; not after the van followed her home.

"I'll go see who that is and you can call the police for me."  Alexia said as she walked to the door.  It hadn't occurred to her to look out the window until she was already standing at it peering out through the slits in the blinds.  Outside on their small porch was a tall dark skinned man wearing a navy blue suit and tie.  He was smiling and when he noticed that she was looking at him he waved.  His smile looked strange, almost as if he were bored of smiling, but Alexia didn’t take a conscious note of it.  She quickly dropped the blinds and ran to tell her mother what she had seen.  Her mother hadn't yet picked up the phone, so she followed Alexia into the living room to see who the man at the door was.  He knocked again and this time her mother actually answered the door, instead of peering through the blinds like her daughter had.

"Hello there, my name is Norman G. Dillenwater, and I am a here about an Alexia Milroe Lambre, age sixteen.  Is there such person living here?"  The man spoke with a thick southern drawl that Alexia would have smiled at in normal occasions, except for the current situation.  He smiled happily as he said this, apparently not noticing the look on Alexia and her mother's faces.  He also might not have known that no one ever used Alexia's middle name.  Her father requested it made her middle name before he died, about a week before her mother gave birth; he died of Esophagus cancer.  As odd as it was, her mother had decided to use it since it was his dying wish.  They only used it on needed legal documents since it was so unusual.  The fact that this man knew it did anything but reassure them; in fact it almost scared them.

"It depends, what do you want?"  Her mother said angrily.  Alexia could hear a tone of worry in her mother’s voice as well.

"I am here for a company that researches telekinetic and other types of powers and we have reason to believe that this girl has a special power.  I am here to offer her a place at our research lab and school.  If she should accept, she would live on the premises with other children, receive a type of home schooling, and get a certain amount a month for participating.  I do hope that she will accept."  The man named Norman said, and with his last sentence he sent a pointed look at Alexia.

Her mother knew that there was no point in denying that her daughter had powers, because they more than likely already had proof of her abilities.  "We will think about it," she said quietly as she looked at her daughter.  Alexia must have had a bright look on her face because she added "We definitely will.  But you are not getting any sort of answer until after my daughter and I talk, and after you tell me more about this school."

“Yes Ma’am.  I will gladly tell you anything you like.  Here’s my card, feel free to call me when you are ready to ask your questions.”  He said thoughtfully with his southern accent showing more, handing her mother the card.  They then showed the man who might change their lives to the door and sat down to talk.

Alexia sprawled out on the couch with her ankles crossed over the arm and her head on a soft green pillow while her mother sat in the armchair.  Their living room was decorated with green and gold because those were her father's favorite colors.  They both thought that they should have at least one room in their house that matched her father's taste.  It had yellow walls with green trim, tan furniture, and green pillows.  It was definitely Alexia's favorite room of the house, because it reminded her of the father that she had never had the pleasure to get to know.  She couldn’t truly miss him, since she was born after he was already gone, but she wished everyday that she’d had the chance to know him.  She had never had the opportunity, and she wish all the time that she could have.

"I think that I should go, it's something that I can't possibly pass up on!  I mean, a group of people like me, a school!"  Alexia said excitedly. She was pumped about going to the crazy school/lab thing.  She really wanted to learn how to control her power more.  She had taught herself some things, but she knew that there had to be more.

"Well, if you think that you really want to go, I guess that we'll call the man in the morning, that way you can sleep on it tonight.  I want you to be fully sure of what you are doing before you make the decision.  Also I want to talk to him and figure out any details.  You aren’t going if I don’t like what’s going on, no matter how much you want to go.  Okay?" Her mother said quietly and doubtfully.  She leaned back into the couch as if she were thoroughly exhausted.  Emotionally or physically, Alexia didn’t know.

"Thank you so much!"  Alexia said in one quick breath, rushing to her room to call the only friend she had, who was also the only person other than her mom and herself that knew of her power.  She was extremely excited about the whole idea of the school and hoped that she could go.  Her new life could begin with a phone call tomorrow morning.
