This was the "truth" Alicia and Winnie had pieced together after three whole class periods of painstaking analysis.
"...." Tyrone's mind went blank for a second. He took a deep breath, trying to keep a straight face, but in the end, he couldn't help bursting out laughing. "Him? Clayton? In love with me?"
It was, hands down, the funniest thing Tyrone had ever heard in his life.
"Come on, Alicia, you're overthinking it," Tyrone managed, barely holding back another laugh.
"Oh, sure, laugh all you want. But you two grew up together, didn't you? He's always been different with you. He acts like he's constantly picking on you, but behind your back, he's always helping out. What does that tell you? The guy's all talk and no heart!" Alicia laid out the "evidence" she and Winnie had gathered. "So him pretending that he wants to steal me away from you? That's just a ruse to break us up. His real goal is to drive a wedge between us."
Alicia was absolutely certain Clayton wasn't into her-so why else would he be so possessive? The answer was obvious: Clayton must have feelings for Tyrone.
Tyrone was speechless. There was simply no way to explain this mess.
"And that's exactly why you need to stay away from him," Alicia said sternly, gripping Tyrone's arm.
Tyrone could only sigh and nod in reluctant agreement.
As they reached the front steps of their townhouse, they spotted Vincent leaning against his car at the curb.
Alicia's guard shot up instantly. What was he doing here again?
"Vincent, I've made myself perfectly clear-we're done. Tyrone and I are married now. Please stop coming around," Alicia said sharply, stepping protectively in front of Tyrone.
"Alicia..." Vincent's chest tightened. The girl who once adored him now couldn't get far enough away.
He stood silent for a long moment before finally speaking again. "Actually, I'm here to talk to Tyrone."
Alicia shot him a suspicious look.
"It's fine. Go inside, sweetheart. I'll just have a quick word with him," Tyrone said gently, ruffling Alicia's hair.
Alicia hesitated, still wary, but eventually went inside.
Vincent wasted no time. "I overheard
someone calling my father. The gist of it was
at they wanted him to
help swindle away your inheritance. That's why my dad wanted me to
get you to invest in his new
project-a setup to get your money."
Tyrone's expression darkened. "Couldn't you tell who the caller was?"
"They were both really guarded. But my father treated the other man with an unusual amount of respect. The Lawsons already have serious clout in this city-it would have to be someone even higher up. Certainly not a junior," Vincent mused. Whoever it was, they were a major player.
Definitely not someone young or inexperienced.
"If your dad's that deferential... My grandfather's long gone. And
Reginald White? No way. That only leaves the Edwards family. Officially, Connor Edwards is the head, but
everyone knows his father, O Sampson Edwards, still calls the shots from behind the scenes..." Tyrone fell silent, thinking. He'd suspected the Edwards family
before, but they'd always kept a low
profile, never doing anything
reckless or leaving evidence behind.
"The quieter they are, the more likely it is. I've got an idea," Vincent said, looking Tyrone in the eye. "If you trust me, we could work together-see if we can draw out whoever's behind this."
Maybe, just maybe, this was their chance to expose the real mastermind.
Tyrone gave Vincent a skeptical look. "Suddenly offering to help me? What's in it for you?" He knew Vincent was a businessman-he never did anything without a
payoff.
Still not willing to give up on Alicia?
