Tyrone's brow furrowed. "A coincidence? Or are you just trying to stir the pot- hoping I'll take care of this illegitimate son problem for you?"
Vincent's expression darkened. "I know you won't believe me."
Tyrone dropped his usual infuriating bravado and sat up straighter. "Mayfield's just an outsider at Lawson & Co.-an illegitimate son, nothing more. There's no direct conflict of interest between us. Even if I die, he doesn't stand to gain. So why would he want me dead?"
As far as Tyrone was concerned, he'd never crossed Mayfield.
"I'm just as baffled," Vincent admitted, though he still felt compelled to warn Tyrone. "I'm not here to team up with you against him. I just thought you should knowâ because if anything happens to you, Alicia would be devastated."
"Don't say her name like you're still close," Tyrone shot back, his tone sharp with warning. "Alicia's my wife."
"Tyrone, when did you first decide you'd take her from me?" Vincent's hands balled into fists.
He couldn't quite grasp how he'd lost out to Tyrone. After all, Alicia and Tyrone hadn't had much to do with each other, not really.
"From the moment I learned she was with you, I started thinking about how to get her away from you... bring her back to me," Tyrone said quietly. "But back then, she only had eyes for you. If I'd made a move, she never would've left with me. Honestly, I thought if she was happy-if you truly loved her I could let her go. But you didn't deserve her. You had Alicia, yet your heart was still with Mina. Stringing Alicia along, chasing after Mina at the same time."
Vincent stared at him, lost for words. Finally, he managed, "You really are something else, Tyrone. But it's not over. There are plenty of people who want you gone. If you die, that makes me the winner."
He stood, gaze fixed on Tyrone. Vincent wouldn't be the one to take Tyrone out, but if Tyrone didn't survive this mess, Vincent was determined to win Alicia back.
"As long as you keep out of this, I won't go after Lawson & Co.," Tyrone said, his tone both a warning and an offer.
If Vincent stayed out of the plot against him, even if Mayfield was involved, Tyrone would leave Lawson & Co. alone.
"Tyrone, what makes you think you've still got any leverage?" Vincent asked quietly. "Everyone wants to see you fall. Do you really think you'll get back into Lynch Corporation?"
Tyrone just raised an eyebrow, meeting Vincent's gaze. Anything's possible, isn't it?
Truth be told, Lynch Corporation no longer mattered much to him. Wasn't Evercrest Group already crushing Lawson & Co.?
"I won't touch you," Vincent said at last, exhaling slowly. "Just keep your word."
Once upon a time, he and Tyrone had been reluctant allies. Vincent knew exactly how capable Tyrone was. Better to be uneasy allies than bitter enemies. And if they couldn't be allies, at least they shouldn't be at war. Content belongs to sŵnovel.net
After Vincent left, Tyrone turned as his assistant entered. "Look into Mayfield. I want everything you can find."
The assistant nodded and hurried out.
At the hospital, Alicia and Winnie lingered by the entrance, picking up candied apples from a street vendor Tore heading toward the patient ward, munching as they walked.
"So that Vincent guy-he's really your ex?" Winnie asked, eyeing Alicia curiously.
Alicia took another hearty bite and nodded.
Winnie nudged her playfully. "Girl, you're living the good life. Vincent's pretty easy on the eyes, too."
Alicia shot her a look, shutting that idea down fast. "He's a jerk."
Winnie grinned. "Well, so am I."
"You can't just settle for anyone," Alicia scolded, giving her a look that
