But Alicia knew she would have to give this matter serious thought.
The old man was getting on in years, and as death crept closer, his actions grew more erratic.
He feared Tyrone was becoming too powerfulâso much so that after his own death, Tyrone might threaten Marcus Lynch and Easton. So he did everything in his power to keep Tyrone and Easton's influence in check, working tirelessly to prop Easton up while trying to undermine Tyrone. It was his twisted way of maintaining balance, of preventing the family from tearing itself apart.
Alicia thought he was being foolish, but people near the end were often the most stubborn. It reminded her of how Emperor Augustus, in his final years, was said to have made one rash decision after anotherâexecuting loyal friends, driving his own son to rebellion.
Alicia didnât want to see Tyrone and the old man at each otherâs throats. But if she left, would the old man really let Tyrone go?
âAlicia, think it over,â Vincent said, then promptly hung up the phone.
Alicia sat rigidly in her chair, staring at the untouched dinner on the table, her appetite gone.
Suddenly, her stomach churned. She bolted to the bathroom and barely made it before she was sick.
Her heart was pounding. Fumbling for her phone, Alicia checked her calendarâher period was late. Of course it was.
She got up, hurried to the bedroom, and dug out a pregnancy test. Sitting on the edge of the bathtub, she waited anxiously for the result.
Her nerves were shot.
Maddox was becoming reckless, and if she really was pregnant, the old man would never allow this baby to be born. If the child came into the world, it would mean Tyroneâs claim to the Lynch family inheritance was secure. That would spell the end for Easton and his father.
Her hands trembled as she waited, watching as a faint second line appeared on the stick. Aliciaâs heart sank.
She was pregnantâjust as she suspected. It seemed she was always so quick to conceive.
Pressing her palm to her forehead, Aliciaâs panic grew.
Should she tell Tyrone?
She was about to leave for Italy, which would, at least, put her out of the old manâs reach. But as Vincent said, as long as they werenât divorced, she and her child would never be safe from the old manâs schemes.

Tyrone came home late that night, reeking of alcohol, his mood clearly foul.
Alicia slipped out of the bedroom, hesitated behind the door for a long while, then finally spoke. âTyrone, can we talk?â
He nodded, walked into the bedroom, took off his jacket, and sank wearily onto the couch.
âYour grandfather gave your project to Vincent, didnât he?â Alicia asked quietly.
Tyrone frowned, then pulled Alicia into his arms. âDid Vincent call you? Ignore whatever nonsense he said.â
âYour grandfatherâs old and confused, but people become stubborn when theyâre near the endâno one can change their minds. As long as we stay married, heâll keep coming after you. If we divorce, maybe heâll finally back offâat least until Easton is strong enough to stand on his own.â
Alicia truly didnât want to see Tyrone and the old man locked in a battle for control.
âYou want a divorce?â Tyroneâs eyes darkened.
Alicia nodded and pulled out the pregnancy test. âTyrone, Iâm pregnant. I just want to have this baby safely. A divorce could shield me and the child.â
Tyrone sat up straight, his face tense. âNo, absolutely not. I can protect both of youââ
âBut protecting us would mean going to war with your grandfather,â Alicia interrupted, shaking her head. âIâm leaving the country anyway. When the babyâs older, or when your grandfatherâs goneâif you still want me, we can get married again.â
She didnât want to divorce him.
But she couldnât see another way.
