Chapter 299

“Dad, look at the situation we’re in. There’s no such thing as a real grudge between a father and son. If I were you, I’d drop my pride and go kneel outside Tyrone’s door—beg him for help. He’ll give it if you ask,” Easton said flatly.

Marcus’s face darkened. “And what about you? Can’t you do anything for your mother? Even if I begged until my knees broke, Tyrone wouldn’t hand over a dime.”

“How would you know if you haven’t even tried? The truth is, you just don’t love Mom, do you? She’s dying, and you still can’t swallow your pride.”

Frustration flared in Easton’s eyes.

Marcus was at a loss for words, his mind going blank.

It was Valery who finally found her voice, sobbing as she spoke. “The million for surgery is just the beginning. God knows if I’ll even live long enough for you to make that money. I still want to see you get married, have children, let me hold my grandchild...”

Her tears only fell harder. “And what if the surgery doesn’t go well? What about the cost of recovery, the medication? Tyrone might help once, but there’s no way he’ll do it again. Son, do it for me, just this once...”

Easton nodded. “Fine. I’ll agree to inherit the Lynch family estate.”

Both Marcus and Valery stared at him in disbelief. “Are you serious?”

Easton’s expression didn’t change. “But I have one condition.”

“Name it, anything,” Marcus said, his voice trembling with hope.

“It was you, Dad, who signed the papers years ago—cutting all ties to the Lynch family, swearing never to have any connection again. If I go back, I become one of them. That means we’re done. I’ll give you a million for Mom’s surgery, but after that, we’re through. No more contact. Even if you come begging, I won’t see you again.”

Marcus was stunned, hardly able to believe what he was hearing from his own son.

He stared at Easton, his hand shaking as he pointed at him. “You... you ungrateful child! Are you trying to kill me with anger?”

“Easton, how can you treat us like this?” Valery’s voice rose, panic clear as day.

Easton’s anger boiled over as he shoved the test results into Marcus’s arms. “You’re my parents! But you’ve used your own bodies to trick me—am I your son, or just a bargaining chip to you?”

Valery dropped her gaze, guilt written across her face.

They’d been found out. Easton had seen right through them.

Marcus’s shame twisted into rage. He shot to his feet and slapped Easton across the face. “Why is it so hard for you to inherit a billion-dollar fortune?”

“Maybe because that so-called fortune was once a mountain of debt, and you were the one who signed it all away. I was never qualified to inherit anything, and you made sure of that. Isn’t that on you?” Easton’s voice shook with fury.

Marcus stood frozen, speechless.

Eyes reddening, Easton turned and walked out.

He was furious—furious that his own parents would use life and death as leverage, furious at the powerless, aching cold in his chest.

Who wouldn’t want a shortcut? Who wouldn’t want to suddenly become the grandson of Harboridge City’s richest man? Anyone else would be over the moon.

But if Marcus had been a better man, someone who hadn’t burned bridges and hurt Tyrone, maybe Easton could have gone back with his head held high. Now, though—what right did he have?

...

Lynch Corporation, Seaview City branch.

Tyrone sat in his office when his assistant stepped in.

“Mr. Lynch, the old man had someone go to Seaview General and pay off a doctor to fake Valery’s medical records. They were hoping to pressure Easton into giving in, but the kid saw through it right away,” the assistant said quietly.

Tyrone’s eyes narrowed as he looked up. “Get in touch with Easton. I want to meet him.”

The assistant hesitated, concern flickering across his face. “Aren’t you worried, sir? He’s only nineteen, but he’s already that shrewd...”

“If a nineteen-year-old can handle himself like that, then he’s someone worth watching,” Tyrone replied, his tone grave. “Set up a meeting for tonight.

And make sure he doesn’t tell anyone about it.”
