Alicia found it strange, too. Clayton was always cold and aloof, acting as if no one else mattered. Yet today, not only had he apologized, heâd actually invited her out to dinner. Something was definitely off.
âWant to grab dinner with us tonight? Got any plans?â Alicia shot Winnie a wink.
Winnie hesitated. âHe invited you, not me. Wouldnât it be weird if I tagged along?â
âItâd be even weirder if I went alone with him,â Alicia grinned, grabbing Winnieâs hand. âYou know how people love to gossipâone dinner and suddenly there are crazy rumors. Besides, you like handsome guys, right? Claytonâs got the looks, and heâs the White familyâs adopted son. Reginald only trusts him with the important work at White Corporation, and Tyrone says heâs a genius.â
Winnie narrowed her eyes, then waved dismissively. âForget it. Guys like him? Way out of my league. Honestly, Iâve never met a man who wonât even spare me a glance. Tyrone only paid attention to me because you looked at me for a second.â
Alicia burst out laughing. âCome on, youâre gorgeous. If he doesnât notice, thatâs his problem. Tyrone told me Claytonâs never even datedâno girlfriends, no rumors, nothing. Maybe heâs into men.â
Winnieâs eyes widened in mock realization. âThat must be it! People say men that clean-cut usually swing the other way.â
â
Meanwhile, in a car across town, Clayton kept sneezing as he watched Alicia through the window and wondered how to make a good impression at dinner.
He had no idea heâd already been classified as âprobably likes men.â
The driver glanced back at him and sighed. âMr. Clayton, Miss Nicole sent a list... She wants you to pick up the latest designer bag, some new arrivals from these brands, pastries from the artisan bakery on the south side, and... more jewelry from these shops.â
He looked apologetic. Nicole never missed a chance to treat Clayton like her personal shopper, and he never refused her.
Clayton took the list, a faint smirk playing at his lips. âAnd how did she put it this time?â
The driver recited dutifully, âMiss Nicole said sheâs the sole heir to the White family, everything belongs to her, and since you eat her food and wear her clothes, itâs only fair you buy her what she wants...â
Clayton let out a cold laugh, his eyes darkening. âFine. Letâs get her what she wants.â

Clayton leaned back, idly turning an expensive emerald rosary in his fingers. âDo you know what the most painful thing in life is? Itâs not never having anythingâitâs having it all, only to lose it and have to give it back, every last bit.â
Whatever Nicole asked for, heâd give her. But when the truth finally came out, heâd make sure she returned it allâwith interest.
The White family, hers? What a joke.
Even before he knew Nicole was a fraud, the thought of marrying her made him uneasy. She wasnât even worthy of being a decorative trophy.
But now that he knew the truth, he almost felt relieved.
Clayton gazed out the window toward the school, a faint smile on his lips. Now that he knew Alicia was the real heiress of the White family, he actually felt a strange sense of gratitude.
â
In the classroom, Alicia and Winnie had just taken their seats when Nicole swept in, surrounded by a crowd of classmates.
âMiss Nicole, is it true youâre the only heir to the White family of Harboridge City?â
With that title, Nicole could walk into any room like she owned the place.
She puffed up with pride, strutting like a show-off. âOf course. Iâm the sole heir to the White family. No one else.â
