Alicia and Winnie stood together at the front of the office, both a little giddy. It was their first time being âbad students,â and for Aliciaâwhoâd spent the first twenty-something years of her life playing by the rules and keeping her head downâit felt exhilarating.
It was like opening Pandoraâs box; once that thrill slipped out, there was no shutting it back in.
And now, Alicia realized she wasnât as scared as she used to be. Whenever something went wrong, her first thought wasnât panicâit was Tyrone.
She didnât want to cause him trouble, but for reasons she couldnât quite explain, she trusted Tyrone completely. She knew, deep down, that he would always look out for her.
Just like the time sheâd landed in the police station for clocking Henry over the headâTyrone had shown up, pulled her out, and handled everything without a second thought.
Maybe all she really needed to do was follow her heart for once.
âNervous?â Winnie draped an arm over Aliciaâs shoulders. âBabe, donât be such a goody-two-shoes. Itâs good to break the mold now and then.â
Alicia shook her head, eyes sparkling. âNot scared. If she mouths off again, Iâll smack her again.â
Winnie laughed and ruffled Aliciaâs hair. âKnew I liked you for a reason. Starting tomorrow, Iâm teaching you kickboxing. Give it six months and youâll be able to take on ten girls at once.â
Alicia burst out laughing and nodded with enthusiasm.
Just then, Chloe stumbled into the office, all bluster and indignation. She was quick to play the victim. âMs. Carter, Iâve already called my family. My cousin will be here any minute. Sheâs the heiress to the Holloway family, future lady of Lawson & Co.â
Chloe made sure everyone was aware of Minaâs pedigree, spelling it out in meticulous detail.
Winnie rolled her eyes. âFuture lady of Lawson & Co.? Thatâs still in the future, isnât it? What if Vincent dumps her? Thatâd be embarrassing.â
Then, grinning, Winnie pointed at Alicia. âMs. Carter, this one? Sheâs already Mrs. Lynchâwife of the Lynch Corporation CEO. Married and official.
Unlike some people, who are still just dreaming in front of the mirror.â
The teacher looked between the girls, clearly realizing these werenât people to mess with.
âHmph, Mrs. Lynch? Tyroneâs about to be kicked out of the Lynch family. Havenât you heard?â A haughty voice rang out from the doorway. Mina had arrived, swaggering into the room with her nose in the air.
Alicia glanced at Mina with mock innocence, her voice sugary sweet. âOh? I heard Vincentâs backing out of the engagement. He told me he doesnât want to marry you.â
Minaâs face darkened with fury. âAlicia, letâs see how long you can keep up this attitude.â
Alicia put her hands on her hips. âAs long as I want, thanks.â
Mina turned to the teacher. âShe started the fight. She should be punished.â
Alicia replied with wide-eyed innocence. âDo you have any proof we started it?â
Chloe jabbed a finger at the bruise on her forehead. âThe mark on my face is proof enough! Everyone in class saw it happen.â
Alicia rolled her eyes. âYouâve bribed classmates to lie for you before. Why should anyone believe you now?â
Chloeâs jaw clenched in frustration.
Mina let out a cold laugh. âMs. Carter, I recall your international class is short on resources. My fiancé Vincent runs Lawson & Co., which has its headquarters right here in Seaview Cityâunlike the Lynch Corporation, which is just a Harboridge business, isnât that right?â
It was a thinly veiled threat.
âMiss Holloway, itâs pretty sad to have to throw your fiancéâs name around for intimidation,â a deep, calm voice interrupted from the doorway.
Tyrone had arrived.
Aliciaâs eyes lit up with delight. âTyroneâ!â
She dashed over and threw her arms around him. âYouâre back already?â
Sheâd thought it would be ages before she saw him again.
Tyrone smiled down at her, his voice gentle and full of affection. âCame back to make sure the school didnât have any rabid dogs running loose.
Wouldnât want you getting bitten.â
Chloe glared at Tyrone but didnât dare say a word.
Mina frowned, looking him up and down. âMr. Lynch, I hear the Lynches have a new heir. With your position so shaky, perhaps you should keep a lower profileâdonât want to make enemies.â
