Chapter 234

Seaview General Hospital.

Alicia sat motionless on the hospital bed, her face ghostly pale.

A dull ache still throbbed in her abdomen.

Melanie hovered at the doorway, eyes rimmed red, too afraid to come inside but unwilling to leave Alicia alone.

"I'm fine. You should go home," Alicia said quietly, not wanting to say more.

After all, Melanie had grown up alongside Tyrone she couldn't just call the police and have her arrested. Besides, at her core, Melanie wasn't a bad person.

"The doctor said... the baby didn't make it. I'm so sorry," Melanie choked out, tears streaming down her face.

Alicia shook her head, pressing her lips together to keep her emotions in check. She didn't trust herself to speak. Right now, she couldn't bear to look at Melanie at all.

Melanie lingered at the door, head bowed, refusing to leave.

The room was so quiet that Alicia could hear the hum of the air conditioner. She sat on the bed, lost in a fog of confusion.

She didn't know what she was supposed to feel or even think.

She'd promised Tyrone a child. Everything had seemed so smooth, so hopeful. For a fleeting moment, she wondered if her streak of bad luck had finally ended.

Ever since meeting Tyrone, she'd started to believe she might be lucky after all.

But maybe she'd been wrong.

Without this baby, could she and Tyrone's marriage survive? Would she still have a place in his life? Would Maddox throw her out the moment he had the chance?

Her mind was a mess. Her breath came in shallow, burning gasps.

Deep down, Alicia knew that what tormented her most wasn't the fate of her marriage contract with Tyrone. She was terrified she might not be able to stay by his side-contract or not.

She'd fallen for him.

Hopelessly, foolishly, she cared for a man she knew could never be hers.

But could anyone blame her? Tyrone was the kind of man it was impossible not to fall for...

"I heard she fell down the stairs?" Serena's voice rang out as she arrived, clearly having gotten the news the moment it broke.

She smiled, then tried to step into the room.

Melanie, eyes swollen from crying, reached out to block her. "Don't go in."

Serena arched a brow. "Excuse me? I'm your mother."

"Her baby is gone. Please, just leave her alone," Melanie replied, her voice steady for the first time.

It sounded like she'd finally drawn a line in the sand with Serena no more letting her mother call the shots.

Serena's expression soured, but after a moment, maybe remembering the lost child, she swallowed her anger. "It's fine. I'm not mad at you today. You did well."

Alicia's voice was hoarse as she looked at Serena. "Is this how you treat your own child? Do you even care?"

A mother like Serena was suffocating.

"You don't need to worry yourself

about that, Miss Alicia," Serena replied coolly. "Now that you've lost the baby, hope you'll do the

sensible thing and leave Tyronal ne

You

don't know him. You're not right for him. The only person who truly belongs by his side is me?" Content

Serena believed she understood Tyrone better than anyone else. She'd seen him at

his lowest, after all. She was convinced that made her the one for him.

"Tyrone told me himself you're just someone he owes a debt to. That's all he feels for you," Alicia said, clutching the bedsheet in her fists.

Serena's face flickered, but she quickly forced a smile. "Oh, Alicia. Don't be so naïve. When a man wants to comfort another woman, he never tells the truth. I know all of Tyrone's secrets. I've seen him when he was at his absolute worst. But you? He doesn't even want you to see his true self."

She looked Alicia up and down, pausing before continuing, “You're a good girl, Alicia. Leave Tyrone. Go live your own life. You were meant for something more

than this."

Alicia's hands clenched tighter. "That doesn't excuse you for encouraging your own child to break the law."

Serena let out a sharp laugh. "Oh? And what proof do you have, Alicia?" She leaned in, her smile icy. "Even if you did, do you really think Tyrone would send me to jail? To him, I'll always matter more than you."
