âCall the doctor,â Tyrone said with a furrowed brow before hanging up.
âTyrone... you should go check on her,â Alicia said quietly, head lowered. She knew perfectly well Serena was doing this on purpose, but there was nothing she could do except watch as Tyrone prepared to leave.
She understood all too wellâif Serena had called Tyrone over, there was no way heâd be coming home tonight.
âYou should eat,â Tyrone told her, showing no sign of rushing off. âWhen youâre done, come with me. Weâll go see her together.â
Alicia stared at him, surprised. âYou want me to come too?â
He really didnât seem the least bit anxious.
Did he truly not love Serena?
So much for seeing is believing, she thought. And what people sayâwasnât that unreliable too? Everyone swore Tyrone was madly in love with Serena, that heâd given up his inheritance for her, that the stories were practically legend. But maybe none of it was true.
People really canât be judged by appearances or by rumors.
âIf youâd rather not go, just wait at home,â Tyrone added, as if sensing her uncertainty. âI just donât want you to be bored here aloneâWilmaâs with Serena too.â
Alicia hesitated, then nodded, a sly thought flickering in her eyes. If she tagged along, Serena wouldnât have any excuse to keep Tyrone there, would she? Surely Serena couldnât ask both the housekeeper and Tyrone to stay overnight, not with the daughter present too. Even if he owed Serena something, it couldnât be stretched this far.
âOkayâletâs go,â Alicia said, picking up her pace and eating the rest of her pasta faster than she wouldâve liked. Tyroneâs cooking was so good, it seemed almost a shame to rush through it.
âTake your time,â Tyrone said gently, pouring her a glass of water. âThereâs no need to hurry. Wilma and Melanie are already there, and the doctors are on duty. Itâs not like weâre rushing in for an emergencyâweâll just be sitting around waiting anyway.â
Heâd already told Wilma to keep an eye on things and call if anything urgent happened.
But it hadnât been Wilma who calledâit was Melanie. That was probably a sign things werenât too serious.
Aliciaâs fingers paused over her fork. She glanced at Tyrone several times, realizing his logic made perfect sense.
She finished her pasta quietly, then dutifully carried her bowl and utensils to the sink.
Before she could start washing, Tyrone stepped in behind her, wrapping his arms gently around her waist and taking the bowl from her hands. âLet me,â he murmured, washing the dishes himself.
The feeling of being held in his arms made Aliciaâs cheeks burn. The intimacy of the moment was unmistakable.
For a split second, Alicia let herself imagine they were really a loving married couple.
âTry not to touch cold water,â Tyrone said, drying her hands with a paper towel.
âOkay...â Alicia nodded softly.
On the drive to the hospital, Alicia couldnât help glancing over at Tyrone every so often. He really was handsome...
Lately she caught herself wonderingâif sheâd met Tyrone earlier in life, would things have been different? Would he have ever fallen for her?
âTyrone...â she said as they parked near the hospital, passing by a row of food stalls. She spotted a vendor selling grilled marshmallow skewers and tugged gently on Tyroneâs sleeve. âCan I try one of those?â
It was a small, secretive requestâpart of her didnât want to get to Serena too quickly.
Serena was in the hospital, after all. It couldnât be anything too serious, right?
Tyrone smiled, nodded, and walked with Alicia to buy a skewer.
He seemed willing to indulge her every little wish.
With the warm skewer in hand, Alicia felt a quiet happiness settle over her, the smile reaching all the way to her eyes.
Tyrone took her hand as they walked toward the inpatient wing. He could see every bit of her playful nature written across her face, and his own lips curled up in a smile.
Inside the hospital roomâ
Serena lay pale and weak in the bed. Melanie sat with her head bowed, not even looking up when Tyrone walked in.
Wilma glanced at Tyrone and quietly explained, âThe doctors are still running tests to find out why she was vomiting blood. For now, it doesnât look like anything serious.â
