âIf Tyrone truly cares about you, thatâs one thing... but how long do you think a rich manâs heart can stay true?â Albertineâs tone was thick with worry.
âAlbertine, you donât need to worry. I know how to stand on my own two feetâlong before his feelings for me ever run out.â Aliciaâs voice was calm;
she had her own plans.
She knew she came from nothing, and sheâd accepted that. She had no shame in quietly biding her time.
She didnât see anything wrong with using a man as a stepping stone. It wasnât as if sheâd been born into privilegeâshe needed a little help, and if that meant leaning on him, so be it.
Albertine squeezed her hand. âI believe you. You might look gentle, but youâve always had a mind of your own.â
Albertine stayed in Seaview City for two days. Alicia took her shopping, bought gifts for the children at the orphanage, and then booked Albertineâs flight back home.
During those two days, Tyrone hadnât called once. Alicia didnât dare disturb him either, so she kept her phone tucked away, resisting the urge to reach out.
Still, the silence left her uneasy.
She wanted to tell him about the pregnancy, but the thought of something going wrong at her next check-upâof disappointing himâmade her hesitate.
Maybe it was better to wait.
âCall me when you get to the orphanage,â Alicia said as she walked Albertine to the airport.
âDonât worry, I will. Now you should get homeâyou need to take care of yourself, especially in these early months.â Albertine gave her a gentle push.
Alicia nodded, waiting until Albertine was through security before turning to leave.
In the swirling crowd, a man lurked, his eyes fixed on Alicia. As she moved toward a busy spot, he broke into a run and slammed straight into her.
Heâd meant to knock her down, to cause a miscarriageâeveryone knew how fragile pregnancies were at the beginning.
âWatch out!â Suddenly, Tyrone appeared out of nowhere, pulling Alicia into his arms just as the man lunged.
The attacker missed and crashed to the floor.
He shot a panicked glance at Tyrone and tried to bolt, but Felix was fasterâpinning him down. âTrying to run? You think you can just walk away after that?â
Alicia stood frozen in shock, staring at Tyrone. âT-Tyrone? You... youâre back?â
Tyrone held her tightly, finally letting out a breath.
He looked exhaustedâhis eyes rimmed with red and the start of a beard shadowing his jaw. It wasnât hard to guess how hard heâd been working lately.
âOur Mr. Lynch has gone completely mad. He crammed a weekâs worth of work into three days... nearly drove the contractors crazy,â Felix said with a laugh, signaling for security to take the attacker away.
Alicia looked at Tyrone, startled. âWhy are you working yourself so hard?â
âHavenât slept in two nights, sweetheart...â Tyrone murmured, holding her close.
Alicia hugged him back, patting his back gently. âLetâs go home.â
At the word home, Tyrone stiffened, then managed a tired smile. âYeah... letâs.â
â
In the car, Tyrone couldnât keep his eyes open any longer. He leaned against Aliciaâs shoulder, lacing his fingers with hers as he drifted off.
âSweetheart... do you have any good news for me?â Tyroneâs voice was softâhe was waiting for Alicia to tell him herself. But she didnât seem eager to speak.
Aliciaâs cheeks turned pink. That pet name... it was almost too intimate.
âWell... the blood test says Iâm pregnant, but itâs still early. Not a sure thing yet.â Her voice was barely above a whisper. âTyrone, will you come with me for the follow-up in a few days?â
A slow smile spread across Tyroneâs lips as he straightened up. âAnd what are you supposed to call me now?â
Heâd called her sweetheartâsurely she could call him something in return?
Aliciaâs thoughts scrambled. She remembered what Molly had once saidâsome wealthy men liked it when their girlfriends called them Daddy... It was a strange sort of game.

Tyrone pouted. âFelix isnât a stranger.â
Alicia stared at her lap for a long moment before mumbling, âDaddy...?â
Felix slammed on the brakes so hard he nearly catapulted himself through the windshield. On second thought, maybe it was better to pretend he was a stranger after all.
