Yvonne nodded. Twenty-threeâthat lined up perfectly.
âOur Alicia has had a hard life,â Albertine said, her voice catching in her throat. âI just hope she finally gets a bit of good fortune. Years ago, someone left her on the steps of our orphanage. Most of our children there had special needs or chronic illnesses. But Aliciaâshe was always healthy, always such a beautiful little girl. I canât imagine how her parents could have been so heartless.â
Yvonne drew a shaky breath, her fingers trembling.
Alicia had been abandoned at the orphanage.
A perfectly healthy child, left at a home meant for children with disabilities...
If her birth parents truly abandoned her, how could they have been so cruel?
Alicia had always been bright, quick-witted, and well-behaved, not to mention beautiful.
Yvonneâs serious expression suddenly softened into a smile. âWell, congratulations are in order. Youâre having Tyroneâs childâmaybe your hardships are finally at an end. Tyrone might be difficult, but heâs fiercely protective of his own.â She reached out to gently stroke Aliciaâs hair. âWhat a lovely young woman youâve become.â
Alicia ducked her head, a little embarrassed. âThank you...â
No sooner had she finished speaking than Yvonneâs ring caught on a lock of Aliciaâs hair, yanking out several strands. The sharp pain made Aliciaâs eyes water.
Yvonne frowned, examining her ring in annoyance. âOh dear! Look at this ringâsuch a nuisance. Did I hurt you?â
Alicia quickly shook her head. She wasnât one to fuss over a few lost hairs.
âWell, if thereâs nothing else, you should take your aunt home and get some rest. You donât need to go back to the hotelâjust head straight to Tyroneâs place, since youâre expecting,â Yvonne said, motioning for the driver to take Alicia home.
âThatâs too much trouble, really. My aunt and I can just grab a cab...â Alicia protested, feeling awkward.
âNonsense. I need to stop by for a check-up anyway. My driver can take you, then swing back for me. And besides, youâre pregnant nowâyou should treat yourself like a rare gem,â Yvonne said with a warm smile, waving off Aliciaâs concerns.
Unable to say no, Alicia thanked her again and left with Albertine.
As soon as they were gone, Yvonne glanced down at the strands of hair in her hand.
Whatever the truth, sheâd get a paternity test done first.
Yvonne had no patience for guessing games. She only cared about results.
She carefully sealed the hair in a plastic bag, then settled onto a bench and made a call. âPick me up at Seaview General Hospital. I also need a paternity testâkeep it strictly confidential.â
The man on the other end chuckled. âWith the way you go through paternity tests, itâs a wonder you donât just open your own lab.â
âSave the jokes. Finding the right person is like scratching off a lottery ticket. You never know...â Yvonneâs voice faltered, her gaze dropping.
What if this time she really had found her?
âIâll be there soon.â
After hanging up, Yvonne allowed herself a small, wry smile before dialing Tyrone.
âTyrone, Iâve got good news and bad news. Which do you want first?â she asked, her tone light.
âJust tell me,â Tyrone replied, not one for riddles.
âTypical,â Yvonne sighed, leaning back against the bench. âYour grandfatherâs dead set on pushing you two to divorce, and heâs got his sights on Alicia now.â
Silence stretched on the other end.
âButâthereâs good news, too. Your wifeâs bloodwork just came in. Sheâs pregnant. Early days, but itâs confirmed.â Before Yvonne even finished, the call had already ended.
Yvonne laughed. âSo rudeâcanât even spare a thank you?â
Others might believe Tyrone didnât care about Alicia, that she was just a stand-in or an excuse. But Yvonne knew better. She could see, clear as day, just how much Alicia meant to him.
So much that no one else would ever believe it.
But she still couldnât figure out why Tyrone wouldnât admit it, even to himself.

...
Tyroneâs mansion.
Alicia led Albertine inside. The sheer size of the house left Albertine in awe. âYou could fit half a dozen orphanages in here,â she said, shaking her head in amazement.
Alicia nodded in quiet agreement.
