Alicia nodded, her eyes red with unshed tears.
Yvonne sat quietly, watching Alicia and Dean Zachary, lost in silence for a long time.
She felt utterly adrift, like a moth caught in a lampshade, desperate and directionless. Her sister and brother-in-lawâs killers were still at large, and she hadnât found even the faintest clue. Now, she could only clutch at strawsâwhenever she saw a young woman who resembled her sister and was about Nicoleâs age, sheâd consider a DNA test, hoping against all odds for an answer.
âGrandpa, I donât think thereâs any point waiting for the test results. Letâs just go. Thereâs no reason to waste any more time here,â Nicole said, taking the old manâs arm and preparing to leave.
He grunted, getting to his feet and fixing Alicia with a cold stare. âYouâd better look after yourself.â
Alicia had managed to offend the Lynch family, the Whites, the Lawsons, the Hollowaysâsheâd really outdone herself, making enemies of every major family in Seaview and Harboridge.
Once the divorce with Tyrone went through, it was obvious her life would only get harder.
So the old man had no intention of dealing with her himself. Heâd let others teach her a lesson after the divorce was finalized.
Sheâd brought all this on herself.
Alicia kept her head down, silent.
As the old man and Nicole reached the door, the hospital director hurried over, holding a fresh set of test results.
Alicia didnât look up. She didnât even want to hear the outcome anymore.
The director smiled as he approached the old man. âThe blood test results are in.â
The old man gave him a dismissive grunt. âI doubt thereâs anything worth seeing.â
âThe early pregnancy hormone levels look good. Weâll need to keep an eye on things, but for now, everythingâs progressing as it should.â The director handed him the report.
The old man paused, frowning in confusion as he glanced over the paper. âWhat does this mean?â
The director smiled, rushing to explain. âSheâs definitely pregnant. Itâs still early, though, so things are a bit unstable.â
Alicia shot to her feet, staring at the director in shock. No way... There had to be a mistake.
Albertine stood as well, equally surprised. âAlicia, youâre pregnant.â
Yvonne let a small smile tug at her lips. The girl really was blessed. Against all odds, sheâd conceived.
The old man stared at the numbers, not fully understanding, but seeing that the values were higher than normal.
Nicole snatched the report from his hands, her voice trembling. âHow is this possible? Couldnât some kind of medication cause a false result?â
The director nodded. âItâs true, certain hormones or medications can affect the outcome. Thatâs why we recommend retesting in a week to be sure.â
The old man scowled, grunting again. âYouâre quite the schemer.â
Alicia shook her head. âI havenât taken any medication or injections. Believe what you want.â
Her heart was pounding. Maybe her prayers had been answered. If this was really happening...
Her eyes filled with tears as she walked over, took the test results, and let out a shaky, joyful laugh.
Was she really pregnant?
Nicole glared at her, voice icy. âSomeone like you isnât exactly trustworthy. If youâre so confident, letâs see what the results say in a week.â Even if Alicia was pregnant now, Nicole was determined to make sure that wasnât the case by next week. There was no way sheâd let this baby be born.
If Alicia really was pregnant, the divorce couldnât go through for at least a year.
A year was too longâtoo much could go wrong.
âFine. Iâll come back for another test in a week,â Alicia said, gripping the results tightly.
âYouâd better be telling the truth,â the old man snapped, then strode out the door.
Nicole shot Alicia one last venomous look before following him.
When everyone had gone, Yvonne finally approached. âAlicia, how old are you?â
Alicia looked at her gratefully. âThank you. Iâm twenty-three.â
