Chapter 156

West Street Bistro.

Alicia followed the GPS and found Vincent. When she entered the private dining room, the young girl still hadn’t arrived.

It was obvious Vincent had lured Alicia here on purpose, hoping for a chance to be alone with her.

Alicia sat as far from him as possible, eyes fixed on her phone, silent.

Vincent’s irritation was clear. Frowning, he watched her keep her distance. “What, do you think I’m going to bite? Sit over here.”

Alicia ignored him.

“Alicia...” Vincent’s voice softened into a weary, almost pleading tone. “Can we please not do this today?”

Still, Alicia wouldn’t look at him. Whatever Vincent said, she stayed in her own world, pretending not to hear.

Vincent drew a deep breath. She used to be so gentle with him—now, she was nothing but infuriating.

He finally got up and walked over, settling into the chair beside her.

She tried to move away, but Vincent caught her by the wrist.

“Look at this.” He pulled out his phone, holding up photos and videos of Tyrone and Serena. “He’s going to marry Serena eventually. The only reason Maddox won’t let it happen now is because of Nicole. Maddox is old—how much longer do you think he’ll be around? Tyrone is using you to distract Maddox and shield Serena from all the gossip and attacks. The moment the old man is gone, you and Tyrone will get a divorce, and he’ll marry Serena.”

Alicia stared at the pictures. Even though she knew her role was just that of a contractual wife, a faint ache tightened in her chest.

“Mr. Lynch pays me three million a year, plus plenty of perks. He appreciates my design talent and is even willing to send me abroad for school. All these things are enough to make me perfectly content being his scapegoat,” Alicia replied, her voice cold and even.

What Tyrone offered was real—tangible and valuable.

“Alicia! Don’t you get it?” Vincent snapped. “You can’t just waltz into a family like the Lynches. Even if you get your three million, you’ll never get to spend it. Because of Tyrone, you’ve made enemies of both the Whites and the Lynches. That’s a death sentence in their world.”

In their circles, money was the least important thing.

“It’s none of your business.” Alicia didn’t even look at him.

She felt Vincent was overstepping. “Mr. Lawson, you’re about to get married. Your fiancée is Mina. Maybe you should worry about her, not me—

someone completely irrelevant to your life.”

“Are you still mad at me?” Vincent clung to her wrist. “I’m sorry, Alicia. I swear, once I’ve finished sorting out the Lawsons, once I’m secure, I’ll make things right with you. Don’t be foolish. There’s still time to walk away from Tyrone—ask for a divorce before it’s too late.”

He wanted her to cut her losses before she got in too deep.

“No matter what Tyrone’s reasons are, he’s my husband now. I’m already married. Please respect that.” Alicia shook off Vincent’s hand and stood, ready to leave.

“Alicia... does it have to be like this?” Vincent’s voice dropped, edged with anger. “Are you really not going to talk to me until you’ve backed yourself into a corner?”

Alicia paused at the door, turning to look at him. “Vincent, let’s not drag this out. I’m just an orphan—I have nothing you want, nothing valuable to offer. You know that. With Tyrone, at least I’m useful. With you, I’m not. Mina’s family can actually help you keep your place.”

What she couldn’t understand was this: he’d denied their four-year relationship, told everyone he was just her patron, and even stolen her scholarship without caring what happened to her. Why was he still unwilling to let go?
