Jade glanced at Winnie with an approving, almost calculating look. "You're smart. You know exactly what you want."
Winnie gave a small smile. "I just want to make sure nothing goes wrong."
"All you need to do is set up a meeting with her," Jade replied, her voice cool and detached. "Pretend you don't even know meâwe've never met. My people will take care of the rest. As for what happens to her, you don't need to concern yourself."
To chase profit, you had to silence your conscience.
Winnie's signature smile never wavered. "But... what if something happens to Alicia? Could it come back to me?"
"No one will know you were involved," Jade said, matter-of-fact.
"I'm just a little worried..." Winnie feigned fear, letting her voice tremble.
"This is how the world works," Jade said loftily. "Survival of the fittest. There's no need to be afraid or anxious. You just need to focus on getting what you deserve."
Winnie paused, considering her next move. "Miss White, I'll need some time to think it over. Could you tell me exactly what you're offering? It would help me make a decision."
She was cleverâshe wanted Jade to state the terms outright.
"Our company, White Corporation, can sign a strategic partnership agreement with you. Any business we do related to food, your company will be our go-to supplier. That includes your agricultural and farming operations here in the countryâwe'll support it all."
It was a generous offerâalmost too good to refuse.
Winnie weighed her options, then nodded with another pleasant smile. "Alright, Miss White. I'll give your offer serious thought."
Jade nodded, handed over her business card with an air of superiority, and strode out.
She'd done her homework on Winnie. From chatting with Winnie's colleagues, she knew the woman was ruthlessly ambitiousâa gold-digger always trying to cozy up to powerful men on business trips. She'd dated a few already, and now her sights were set on Tyrone.
Someone who would befriend Alicia just to get close to Tyroneâdid she even need to think twice? Clearly, she was only interested in maximizing her own gain.
Once Jade left, Winnie sat on the bed, staring at the business card, lost in thought.
Jade wasn't wrongâWinnie really was out for herself.
She was already plotting how to squeeze even more out of this opportunity. This could be her big break, a chance dropped right into her lap.
A sly smile tugged at her lips. She picked up her phone and added Tyrone on Messenger, noting, "Alicia's friendâshe's in danger."
Winnie wanted to take a risk, to see if Alicia really mattered to Tyrone as much as everyone said.
She'd heard all about Jade, the White Corporation heiress. Everyone in their circle gossiped that she was just the lucky daughter of a mistressâ
nobody really respected her.
Teaming up with someone so twisted was a last resort; if Jade could go after Alicia today, she might turn on Winnie tomorrow. Having to constantly watch her back around people like that was exhausting.
Better to take her chances with Tyrone.
As soon as she sent the friend request, Winnie stood and headed downstairs to meet Alicia, expecting Tyrone might not see her message for hours.
But just as she stepped into the elevator, her phone buzzed. Tyrone had not only accepted her request, he'd messaged her first.
Tyrone: What danger?
Winnie's eyes lit up, a grin spreading across her face. She typed back: Someone named Jade approached me today, asked me to lure Alicia to a private meeting. I don't know what she's planning.
She didn't hesitateâshe sent Tyrone the recording of Jade's offer. "Mr. Lynch, Jade's offer was very tempting, but my father always taught me to do what's right."
She was gamblingâshe couldn't read Tyrone at all.
If Tyrone didn't care about Alicia, she'd lose her shot with him and Jade in one fell swoop.
The uncertainty made her anxious. Did she back the right horse?
Even as she walked out of the hotel, Tyrone still hadn't replied.
Winnie's nerves were fraying. What was Tyrone thinking?
