A Morning at Michelle's House
The morning sunlight filtered through Michelle's window, casting a warm glow across the room.
A gentle breeze carried the crisp, fresh scent of a new day.
The world outside was waking up, yet inside, Michelle and Ava were still fast asleep, wrapped in the peaceful embrace of their dreams.
From the kitchen, a familiar voice called out, breaking the morning silence.
Wake up, sweethearts!"
Michelle's mom shouted,
her voice carrying warmth and care.
Ava, who was accustomed to waking up on her own, stirred at the sound.
A soft smile formed on her lips-after such a long time, someone was calling her to wake up for school. It felt... nice.
With a stretch, she sat up and glanced at Michelle, who was still lost in sleep.
Ava nudged her gently. "Wake up, sleepyhead!''
Michelle groaned, burying her face deeper into the pillow. "
Five more minutes,"she mumbled.
Rollinging her eyes, Ava pulled off the blanket. "Get up, or we'll be late!"
That did the trick. Michelle shot up, her eyes widening in alarm. "Oh no! Not school again! Why does it even exist?!" she groaned dramatically.
Ava chuckled. "To make both of us suffer, obviously," she teased.
Shaking off her sleepiness, Michelle dragged herself out of bed.
*Breakfast and Realizations*
As they entered the kitchen, the delicious aroma of breakfast filled the air. Michelle's mom had set the table, a warm smile on her face.
"I made you both breakfast, sweethearts,"
she said, placing a plate in front of each of them.
"Thank you so much, Auntie,"
Ava responded politely.
Michelle's mom gave her a kind look. "No need to thank me, sweetheart.
You're always welcome here."
Ava's heart warmed at those words. It felt comforting to be treated like part of the family.
"Now, go freshen up, or you'll miss the bus!" Michelle's mom urged.
The girls quickly finished their breakfast, laughing over silly things. But as Ava took another bite, a thought struck her.
How wonderful it must feel to live like this every day... to have breakfast with family, to eat together, to talk and laugh without fear or tension.
A flicker of sadness crossed her face. But she shook it off. No, let's not ruin the day, she told herself.
After breakfast, Michelle's mom walked them to the bus stop. Just before they boarded, she leaned in and placed a soft kiss on Michelle's forehead.
"Have a great day, sweetheart."
Ava watched, her heart tightening.
How long has it been since my mother did that? she wondered.
She brushed the thought away as the bus arrived. The girls climbed aboard, making their way to their usual spot-the last seat at the back.
*School and Unspoken Fears*
As the bus rolled towards school, Michelle nudged Ava.
"So, how was the sleepover?
Fun, right? We'll have to plan another one soon!"
Ava smiled. "Yeah, it was great."
"This time, it'll be at your place, okay?" Michelle said excitedly.
Ava hesitated. "Uh... yeah. Let's see."
She quickly changed the subject, and they spent the rest of the ride reminiscing about the fun they had. Before they knew it, they had arrived at school.
As they entered the classroom, Ava felt an uneasiness settle in her chest. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn't focus on the lecture. Her mind was elsewhere.
What will happen when I go home today?
Will Mom be angry? Will she shout at me?
But why would she? I finished my homework. I followed all her rules... I did everything right...
Then why am I so scared?
She shook her head, trying to dismiss the thoughts. No, I'm overthinking.
*A Message That Changes Everything.*
The hours passed, and soon, it was time for recess.
Ava and Michelle walked to the cafeteria, chatting as they grabbed their food.
Just as Ava was about to take a bite, her phone buzzed.
Her heart clenched when she saw the name flashing on the screen.
"MOM"
Her fingers trembled as she unlocked the phone. A single message awaited her.
MOM : Come home after school.
No excuses.
Ava felt her stomach drop.
The words were simple, but they carried a weight that pressed down on her chest.
A cold shiver ran down her spine.
What was waiting for her at home?
