Night Changes
Annie's POV
"GEN!" I scream as I spot the familiar blond head of hair, causing many people to look my way in the busy airport that is LAX.
Kate and I just got off the plane from Maui and soon enough we will be getting on a plane to London with Gen to meet up with Avery and the guys.
"ANNE!" she shouts back, equally as loud over the crowd.
Katie and I push our way through the mass of travelers, meeting up with her. I give Gen a tight squeeze, even though it's only been a few months, I've missed her more than words could describe.
"Where is your mom?" Katie asks after sharing a hug with her, as well.
"She couldn't come through the gate," she explains. "But she told me to tell you 'hi'!"
We move to sit at a restaurant, catching up with Gen and talking about anything and everything, but mostly about the fact we get to see London.
Waiting around for about an hour, it is time for us to board the plane.
I feel nervous, obviously, it's my first time out of the country and I'm in the hands of my sister--who isn't exactly the smartest person in the world.
âââââ
Ten joyous hours and one layover in New York later, Gen, Kate, and I step off the plane.
"Oh my god!" I squeal, taking one look around the ginormous airport. "This place is HUGE!"
"Yeah, it is," Kate agrees, monotonously, taking out her cellphone to text our worrying mother that we've arrived safely.
"Let's go find Aves!" Gen takes my arm, pulling me to find her sister who is coming to pick us up.
Just then, I get a text from her.
From: Avenue
where are you people? has your plane landed yet?
From: Annie
YES! we just got off! where are you?
From: Avenue
I can see you! hold on!
I look up from my phone to see three people waving. Wait, three?
"Niall!" I scream once I analyze the faces. Hailee and Avery are there, too.
Gen and I dash ahead of Kate to meet up with the three.
"Hey! I've missed you guys!" Niall says while squeezing Gen and I in an enormous hug.
"We've missed you, too!" Gen exclaims.
"Well, I feel so loved," Avery scoffs sarcastically, crossing her arms while watching our gleeful gathering.
"I love you!" Hailee tells her.
"I love you, too!" They share a hug, although everyone else is caught up in their own moments and not paying attention to them. They are so weird.
By this time, Katie has caught up with us. After exchanging a happy greeting with everyone, Avery leads the way to the car, where we would then drive to her and Hailee's flat.
"Aren't you girls tired?" Hailee asks us from the driver's seat, Niall sitting in the passenger seat, and Gen, Kate, Avery and I pressed up against each other in the backseat, just like how we also were when we were young.
"Not really! I just can't wait to see the city!" Gen exclaims from her window seat, staring outside the window with a large grin on her face.
"Well, you're gonna love it. It's such a beautiful place," Avery says. She sighs, a slight frown on her face.
"Are you and Louis doing okay?" I ask her.
"What? Of course we are! What makes you think we aren't?" she speaks quickly.
"I don't know, you seem sad." I shrug.
"Well, we're doing fine. Don't worry."
For some reason, I find myself not believing her. I'll make sure to ask Niall about it.
âââââ
"That took forever!" Gen says as we hop out of the car that is parked in front of the flat.
"The traffic was worse going in, let me tell you..." Niall speaks, getting out of the passenger side of the car, which would be the driver's side in America. Europe is weird.
"Enough chit-chat! Let's see the house!" I shout at them, waiting very impatiently at the door.
"Yeah, yeah, hold on." Hailee digs into her coat pocket, pulling out the key and turning the knob.
The door is pushed open, revealing an old industrial room. The walls made out of old bricks and the floor is old wood covered in a few rugs, some armchairs and a couch in one corner of the room and a kitchen in another.
"This is where you live?!" Katie questions, the excitement in her eyes obvious. "It's so cute!"
"Yeah, I just love the industrial look. I think it's just the perfect place!" Avery says happily, looking around at the modern furniture and brick walls.
While Kate and Avery we chatting away, I take Niall and Gen to the side.
"What's up with Avery? Why is she acting so strange?" I keep my voice low so the rest don't hear us. "Is it Louis again?"
"Nah, I think it's just the stress of the pregnancy." Niall shrugs.
Before I can say anything relating to what Niall just told us, Gen is screaming at Avery from where she stands.
"Avery Marie Williams!" She places her hands on her hips, a look of disbelief crosses her features as she continues to shout. "You're pregnant?!"
"Wait--You guys didn't know?" Niall questions.
Avery slaps a hand to her forehead.
"If it helps Aves out of trouble, I'm pregnant, too." Hailee adds, putting an arm around her friend.
"Thanks Hal." Avery smiles slightly.
"You're both pregnant?!" I question in shock.
They nod, smiling.
"Those idiots..." I mutter, rolling my eyes.
"Who?" Niall asks.
"Louis and Harry. Who else?"
"Why didn't you tell us?" Katie asks, giving both of them a hug.
"I was going to do it eventually, I just forgot." Avery defends.
"Does mom know?!" Gen speaks, the same disbelief in her eyes. "Should we call her?"
"No! I want the whole unveiling to be special." Avery smirks. She's probably thought of some sort of plan.
"Okay, well you aren't going to see any of them for months and then you will probably be too pregnant to travel. Isn't that how it works?" Gen asks.
"Well yes, but don't worry I have a plan," Avery assures.
"You're just gonna show up to Christmas with a kid, aren't you?" I grumble. Her face looks shocked and defensive. I nailed it.
"SERIOUSLY?!" Gen cries, appalled.
"You said it yourself! What else would I do?!" Avery shouts back at her.
"Anything else!"
"Okay well whatever. It's my decision. And I told Nichola the five of us would video chat while the whole family is at dinner, and that should be right about now. So... we will have to finish this another time," Avery concludes and walks over to grab her laptop and set up the chat.
"Whatever..."
"Can I be in it?!" Niall asks.
"Sure!" Avery laughs.
"Why are we doing this exactly?" Gen asks, walking over to sit next to Ave on the couch. The laptop resting on the coffee table with Avery leaning over to set it up.
"Nichola and I talked a bit ago and decided I would video chat them the next time there was a family dinner so I could say hi. It just worked out perfectly that you are here too!" she says.
"Okay! This should be fun then!" Gen jumps excitedly in her seat.
"Hailee come sit!" Avery calls to Hailee and she walks to plop down next to Ave with a smile on her face. Katie and I walk behind the couch and lean forward over the back so we could be seen on the screen. All of the sudden a profile picture comes up on the blue screen and a ringing runs through the apartment. Avery presses the mouse and accepts the call. Once the image buffers a bit, we see Nichola's face in front of a room full of people.
"Hi!" She waves to the camera.
"Hey Nic! Is everyone there?!"
"Yeah! Here," she says and moves the laptop around until it seems to be propped up on some sort of table in the front center of a living room. The rest of the family sits among the couches facing the camera or standing behind.
"Hi everybody!" Avery says to the screen.
A chorus of 'hey!' and 'Avery!' and 'what's up?!' comes through the speakers.
"Hailee, Gen, Katie, and Annie are here too!" she says and motion to all the faces surrounding her.
"Hey! I'm here, too!" Niall cries from the kitchen and runs over to the couch. He slides on his socks against the wood floor and rams right into my side.
"Niall! Calm yourself!" I scold.
"It's your fault you didn't include me!" he says, putting a spoon in his mouth and licking off the contents.
Avery looks back over her shoulder to the boy and narrows her eyes. "Is that my Nutella?"
Niall's eyes go wide and he smiles, running back to the kitchen.
"Niall you twat!" she calls after him. Everyone on the other side of the screen laughs before she brings her attention back to them.
"The blonde bloke scared?" Uncle Garff laughs.
"Who ya callin' a bloke?!" Niall yells from the kitchen.
"Yeah, it's him," he laughs.
"So what's up with everyone over there?" Gen asks.
"Well Brianna here is about to pop," Nichola says, patting her sister's very pregnant belly.
"Yeah, how is that goin' Bri?" Avery asks. I bet she's very curious.
"Meh. I'm getting through. It's just getting uncomfortable to sleep. But I'm so excited to his little face, it's worth it," Bri says, rubbing her belly.
"I bet," Avery says, smiling brightly. The idiot.
"But what about you?! What's up with you people?!" Nic asks.
"Yeah. What is up, Avery?" Gen asks, turning to give Ave a weird look. Avery looks confused--and cautious--back at her.
"Everything's fine..." Ave trails off, not taking her eyes off Gen.
Just then, the front door swings open.
Louis's POV
I walk through Avery and Hailee's front door, Harry following behind me into the girls' flat. Everyone is gathered around Avery's laptop on the couch. Gen and Ave seem to be in a stare down but Avery just looks confused... and maybe scared? Whatever, it is, with Gen, it isn't out of the ordinary.
"Everything's fine..." Ave trails off.
"Really now? Is it?" Gen asks, overly dramatic.
"Yeah...?"
Okay, I guess I'll be a nice boyfriend and step in to save Avery from her peculiar sister's wrath.
"What you guys up to?"
Gen snaps her head around to me, looking quite excited. But... it seems fake.
"Avery, look who it is!" she shouts, turning back to Aves. "The baby daddy, himself!"
Everything seems still until I hear a shattering of glass come from the laptop's speakers.
"Who's the baby daddy? Whose baby?" a familiar voice says through the device.
I begin to walk over to the girls, curious what's going on and what the big deal is that has Avery looking like she's seen a ghost. She must have noticed me walking closer, because she starts shaking her head with a scared look for me to stop. What does she expect?
"Who's on FaceTime?" I ask, still more casual than everyone else seems to be. Even Hailee is still as a statue, staring with wide eyes.
I finally make it to the back of the couch, fitting between Annie and Katie looking over. I lean down to kiss the top of Ave's head before looking up at the screen to see who seems to be causing such stress. My eyes go wide and my heart stops beating in my chest when I see a room full of Avery's entire family staring back at the screen with anger and disbelief in their eyes. I look back down to Avery for help but she looks at me with the same expression.
Panicking, I look up at the screen with wide eyes and a big smile that I am aware looks fake as shit. "Surprise! We're having a baby!"
