Louis' POV

"Our next guest on the show is a band that is taking the world by storm, over and over again. Welcome, One Direction!"

The crowd roars as we walk on the stage of Conan, waving and smiling politely. Although I'm excited for the interview, I can't help but feel down. The lads are still somewhat upset that I have yet to explain to them what happened when we left, and that makes me miss Avery more than ever.

Still, I smile and sit down on the couch next to the boys so that I'm sat directly next to Conan.

The crowd dies down a bit and Conan begins his questions.

"So, boys, how has the tour been going so far?"

"Good," Harry speaks up from beside me. "We've really been enjoying ourselves and, you know, it's only the beginning, so we have a long way to go, and yeah. We are excited."

"So you guys have been in California for... a week or so now?" Conan asks curiously.

"Yeah, we have been staying with a friend that lives in the area and they have been showing us around," Liam says.

"Oh really? Who is this 'friend'?" he asks with exaggerated quotations. The lads all laugh and I do my best to appear nonchalant about joining.

"No, really. They're a good friend of our's family," Niall corrects. "We've been having a blast with them, though. They are some funny company."

"So what have you been doing in our gorgeous golden state?"

"Well, like we said, the people we have been staying with have been showing us around," Zayn says. "One of them is rather young so we have been able to chill out and have fun, so it's been nice. We actually went to Disneyland the other day and had a blast. So, yeah, we've been enjoying it."

"That's great. Okay, so..." he drawls out, dramatically building up to a question he seems to be very excited about, which makes me nervous. "Who's single?"

Crap.

I swallow the lump in my throat and raise my hand, tentatively. I look over at the rest of the boys, hoping for some moral support in their eyes. Instead their gazes are all directed at Harry; the only one of us who kept his hands in his lap.

"So Harry?! Direction's very own flirt has settled down? Who is this girl? She must really be something to be able to take you off the market."

Harry's cheeks flush and he looks down at his twiddling hands in lap. I'm just as curious as Conan to who this mystery girl is, and his silence is beginning to make me anxious.

"Well," he slowly begins. "She is a great girl, and I really like her. Unfortunately she is back in London, so I will be away from her for a bit on the American Tour, but we have planned for her to come visit soon so, ya know, we are making it work."

"Well, come on, what's her name?"

Harry looks around at us with a huge grin on his face.

"Her name is Hailee."

That's when I begin physically choking on air.

I keep coughing as the lads try to come me down. One of the gals from back stage comes out with a glass of water for me. I quickly drink the liquid and thank her before sitting up with my elbows on my knees.

"What?!" I ask.

"Wait, so you didn't know about his sweet little honey?" Conan asks, suddenly even more enthralled.

"No, you could call this an extra-exclusive because the boys here didn't even know." This seems to get his attention.

"Really?"

Harry shakes his head dramatically. "Yep. We just talked it over last night and decided to make it official to the world."

"When did this happen, mate?" I ask. Honestly, last time I checked, they hated each other.

"Amsterdam."

This surprises me even further. "You mean when we had to abandon you because you two were fighting too much?"

"Yep. We ended up talking and hanging out and... yeah." He shrugs with the biggest smile I've seen on his face in a long time.

"Well congratulations to you both," Conan says. "Okay, well we are going to actually have a few questions from the audience before we can hear a few songs from One Direction!"

I turn around with a newfound feeling of content. I like fan questions much better. For the most part, I know they approved of us and are just curious about our lives. I can handle those much better than the questions interviewers use to weasel information.

Two men with microphones in the audience begin walking around to different people with their hands raised. One comes up to a girl that looks a little younger than Gen.

"Hi, my name is Grace," she begins timidly.

"Hi Grace!" we chorus.

"I was wondering... I mean, I just don't get the song 'Rock Me'."

I change my mind. I don't like fan questions.

"Uhhh... ask your mum." Good call, Harry. I chuckle to myself.

"Who's next?" I call out. The other man with the microphone walks over to another raised hand.

I expect a young girl, but the blond locks that rise from the seat belong to another face entirely.

He takes the microphone from the stage-tech and brings it up close to his face with a devilish smirk that makes me red with anger.

Brad.

"So," he begins cooly. I don't look to the other boys to see if they realize what is going on. I honestly don't even care at that moment. "Who is single again?"

My blood runs cold as I begin to get a hint of what he is planning. I raise my hand with the rest of the boys, aside from Harry.

"Really? I could have sworn one more of you had a special someone," he says, feigning confusion, when in reality, he knows exactly what he's doing.

"Nope. Just Harry," Liam snarls.

I wonder if the rest of the audience noticed the sudden tension, although I honestly don't give a fuck at the moment.

"Okay, then Louis, what is this?" He holds up his smartphone, revealing a picture I can't make out in the distance, but I can guess it's content.

Avery.

"We can't see it, mate," Harry sneers.

"Well, here, do you mind if I come up and show you then?" He starts walking up before we can decline.

We all sit stiff as he moves up to the stage. I quickly look over to Conan to see if he would stop him, but he looks just as enticed as the rest of the audience to do anything to stop the show that is now going down.

He comes up to me and I rise from my seat to match his height. No way in hell am I letting the bastard get the satisfaction of towering over me while he shoves this in my face.

"You see." He hands me the device. "This is clearly you kissing a, well, mutual friend of ours."

The picture was taken at her grandparent's house in California, up in the barn. He hadn't even been there at that point, had he?

"What are you trying to pull here?" I growl lowly at him, hoping to be subtle about what is going on in my head.

"Trying to get back what is mine."

That's when I lose it.

"She isn't yours! She never was!" I yell, my volume increasing with every word. I shove his chest, making him take a step back. "You never had any right to do what you did to her! You ruined her life and then decided to come back and try and destroy everything she had created without you!" I shove him harder, once more.

"Oh, please. She needs me in her life. She is nothing without me. You've seen her? She's worthless on her own." His face remains so calm and content as the words poison the air around us. How can he stand up in front of all these people and speak those words with such vindication. He is wrong! It makes me sick. I feel myself loosing control, but I'm too far gone to care. I can't stand here and listen to the way he talks about Avery.

"She needs you in her life?! She tried to kill herself because you were in her life!" I scream at the top of my lungs.

I was so livid I hadn't even realized what I'd just done.

Avery's POV

"She needs you in her life?! She tried to kill herself because you were in her life!"

That's it. That is all I can hear. I stand up and turn off the TV with a shaky hand. I look around the living room and they all have similar expressions; shock and horror.

I can't even breathe. I can't believe he just did that. He had no right to do that! Even if he was trying to defend me, he knows better. He knows how I feel about that. He knows I didn't want anyone to know. Now the world knows. I had every reason to believe I had already been revealed as Louis' girlfriend; the one who tried to commit suicide.

We all just stand in silence; Auntie Liz, Katie, Annie, and I. Frozen.

They had yet to know about that part of our motivation for coming here. Now it's all public information.

Before anyone dares to open their mouth, my phone rings from my pocket. It takes me a minute to react before I fish it out. When I read the caller ID, I instantly feel tears start to gather in my eyes, already threatening to fall.

'Louis😘 mobile calling'

I suck in a breath and hastily walk out onto the patio, knowing my family won't follow me. They know better.

I press the answer button and hold the phone to my ear as the line connects.

"Aves, love, oh my god, thank god you answered. I am so sorry, baby. You know I would never say that if I knew what I was doing. I'm so sorry." I can hear the pain in his voice as he ramblea his apology. I can almost see his red puffy eyes as the tears begin trickling down his face.

"Louis, I can't," I inhale sharply as I stop him from continuing. The line is silent for a moment before his voice comes over the device once again.

"What do you mean?"

I press my eyelids closed and feel as the first of what I know will be many tears fall. "You were the first person I ever told. I had never wanted anyone else to know. I told you... And you told everyone. I know you didn't mean to, but you did. I know what Brad was saying, but what you said hurt me so much more."

"Avery, I am so sorry," he chokes. The sound alone almost breaks my heart into pieces.

"I know you are. I love you. But this is too much for me." I gasp as I struggle to get the words out, and feel the tears stream down my face heavily at this point.

"You don't mean that, do you?" he begs through the phone. I can hear the desperation in his voice, and it made my next words hurt even more.

"I do."

And with that, I end the call... among other things.
