Up All Night

I can't believe this is happening! I never thought in a million years I would be offered to work as a fashion assistant to Caroline Watson for One Direction! Especially being only twenty one years old, and fresh out of university!

Now, I'd never really been a huge fan of theirs, but I've heard some of their songs and a little bit about them here and there from my best friend, Hailee, who has been IN LOVE with them for years! In high school, she swore she would marry Harry Styles. And quite honestly, I think she actually believed it at a certain point. When I first told her I had gotten this job, and was going to be going on tour with the band for an entire year, I thought I would be deaf by the time I started the job from her squealing! She had reminded me profusely how a few years ago we made a deal that if one of us were to ever meet Harry Styles first, we would give him the other's number. At the time, I rolled my eyes, like okay sure, whatever you say, Hal. Who knew I would actually have the opportunity?! I promised her that I would tell the boys she said hi. She just about died at the very thought.

Now that I'm finally here, going up to meet the band on my first day, I still can't believe it is all actually happening!

I follow behind Caroline as we make our way through the studio where the boys are rehearsing for the tour. Apparently this is where I will be spending my time for the next week before we leave to tour the world.

My job description is basically helping Caroline with the boys' outfits for all the concerts, interviews, and appearances they will be doing throughout the tour. Not to mention, babysitting her daughter, Brooklyn. That is really the main point of her hiring extra help--aka; me. She is still an infant, and Caroline needs to be able to care for her while still on tour. Honestly, my understanding of how exactly I will be looking after Brooklyn is rather limited, but I guess I will find out soon enough.

"Are you ready to meet the boys?" Caroline turns around to ask me.

"Yep," I say, smoothing out the front of my jeans--a bit of a nervous habit I have.

Caroline must sense that I am scared about meeting the band, because she tries to comfort me. "Don't worry. You went to high school right?"

"Yeah..." I say, unsure of why she is asking.

"Well, it's just like that. However, maybe slightly more immature."

"Oh, well, great. Can't wait to work with more high school boys," I chuckle sarcastically.

"Yeah, sometimes it can be frustrating getting them to pay attention or sit still, but they are nice enough lads that they make up for it. You will be friends in no time. I promise. Now, you ready to go see what you'll be dealing with for the next year?"

"Yep! Here goes!"

She chuckles and I follow her through the side door, leading into a huge warehouse-type room. There are lights and amps scattered across the room and hanging from the walls and ceiling. In the center, there are tape markings for what I guess would be for stage positioning. Within the main rectangle of the white tape, are five boys, lying on top of each other in a dog pile.

Oh boy.

"Boys!" Caroline calls. "What are you doing?"

"Zayn tripped, and I was being a good lad and helping him up but he pulled me down, then, for some bloody reason, the rest of the boys thought it would be a good idea to join us," one of them says through laughter. I can hardly tell you which one is which when they are standing side by side, let alone piled on top of each other.

"Whatever you say." Caroline rolls her eyes as the boys get up and straighten themselves out. "I want you all to meet someone. Boys," she says as they all walk over to join us. "This is my new assistant, Avery Williams."

"Hi, I'm Zayn," the black haired boy says as he extends his arm to meet mine, shaking my hand.

"I'm Niall," the blonde one says, mimicking his friends earlier movements. He must be the Irish one because his accent is to die for.

"I'm Liam," the next one says.

"I'm Louis," the one who I guess had been the one explaining their situation to Caroline said.

As I make my way down the row to the final boy, he extends his hand to mine and begins to introduce himself like the others, saying, "And I'm-"

"Harry Styles," I cut him off, smirking. "I know who you are. My best friend is just a little in love with you," I explain, still shaking his hand.

He smiles back at me. "Really now? So are you a fan of One Direction, yourself?"

"A little bit. But, I'll admit, the majority of my knowledge of you guys comes from my friend. Not my usual taste, but I've heard a bit of your music from her, and it sounds promising enough."

"Well, we may just have to give you a bit of a 1D education then, shall we?" Liam asks cheekily.

"That sounds like a great idea!" Caroline cuts in. "I don't really need much from you today, so you can familiarize yourself with the boys and how this all works a bit. I'll have some of the crew pack your stuff in our bus so it will be waiting for you when we are ready. You have my number so if you need anything else, or the boys need a slap upside the head, you know how to reach me. And boys," she says turning to face them fully, "I have eyes and ears all over this place, so try and stay out of trouble."

"We promise," they all sing in unison, with innocent smiles across their faces.

"Uh-huh," she sighs, obviously not believing their agreement will stand for very long. She turns and walks back out of the room, yelling a "Good luck!" at me over her shoulder.

I chuckle and turn to face the boys, who are already all staring at me with matching devilish expressions.

Ignoring their stares, I ask, "So, what first?"

"Why don't we go hang out in the tour bus for a little while and get to know you a little better, then we can go about showing you around the rest of the place," Niall suggests.

"Sounds like a plan to me!" I smile.

"YAY!" Louis yells running past me with Harry in tow. He catches up to him and jumps on his back, and Louis carries him all the way through the door.

I laugh, "Are they always like that?"

"Always," Liam smirks at me.

"But don't worry. You get used to it," Zayn assures me as I begin walking with the three remaining members to the door the boys had gone through.

"Looks like I'm in for an interesting year with you boys, eh?"

"You have no idea."

We make our way across the lot to the boys' tour bus. Once we reach the door and enter, I'm taken aback. You can definitely tell five boys live on this bus.

"Sorry about the mess," Louis says from his spot on the couch across from the door.

"No worries."

"Well come on and have a seat! Sit a spill and tell us all about yourself!" Harry cheers, pulling me to the couch to sit between him and Louis. The rest of the boys join us on the opposite couch, facing us.

"Well what do you want to know?"

"Hmm... why don't we start with where you're from?" Liam suggests.

"Okay... I am from America. I moved to the UK after graduating high school for college."

"Where in America are you from?" Zayn asks.

"California."

"Oh... west coast girl!" Harry comments. "Do you live on the beach?"

"Haha no, I live more in the Disneyland area, although it's about an hour drive to the beach, so we go over there a bit."

"Sounds like a fun place! Why did you move to England?"

"Actually, I really just wanted to study abroad. It was my friend who has always wanted to move to England. We figured if we were both going to go across seas, it would be perfect to go together, and there are some really great design schools in England, so after graduation we both moved over here together."

"Wow. Is this the same friend you mentioned before?" Liam asks, seeming honestly curious, which makes me smile for some reason.

"Yeah. Her name is Hailee."

"You guys seem pretty close," Zayn adds.

"Yeah, she's like my sister. I swear the worst part of this new job is I will be away from her for so long! We have been inseparable since Freshman year of high school, and have lived together for the past 3 years."

"Well you know you are welcome to have her visit or come to see a show from time to time, if you like?" Niall says.

"Do you think it would be alright with Caroline if I had her visit for a day or something? I mean, I just started, I don't want to over-step my boundaries or anything."

"Caroline wouldn't mind at all. If you are still able to do your job while she's here, Caroline would love to have her visit," Liam says.

"Wow, that's actually really great you guys! Thank you so much! I know she will love it! Would you mind if she could meet you guys when she comes? She absolutely loves you!"

"No, of course! We would love to meet her!" Louis exclaims.

"Thank you guys! Okay, so what else would you like to know about me?"

"Well, how old are you?" Harry asks.

"I'm 21."

"Wow. That's impressive that you got this job being so young. You must be really good," Zayn encourages.

"I wouldn't say really good, but I like to think I'm okay," I say, trying to hide my blushing cheeks.

"No, don't count yourself short. I mean, you have to be pretty talented to be able to get a job like yours at only 21. Have you even finished university yet?" Liam asks.

"Yes, I just graduated last month. I took a lot of AP courses in high school and took extra units all three years to graduate early."

"Wow! That kinda sounds like torture if you ask me! That's a lot of work!" Louis chuckles.

"Yeah, but, especially in fashion, the younger you get started in the industry the better."

"You must be really determined to make it in fashion. What exactly do you want to do?" Zayn asks.

"Basically what I am doing. Or more should I say what Caroline is doing. I'd love to design my own line one day, but that's more of an after thought."

"Hey all that hard work paid off! You've basically got your dream job right after graduating!" Liam praises.

"Yeah, it truly is a dream come true. When I found out I got the job, Hailee and I practically danced around the apartment for hours just jumping up and down!" I laughs.

"Well congratulations!" Niall cheers.

"Thank you! So, anything else?" I ask, looking around at the boys.

"Nope. I think we know enough... for now," Louis winks at me.

"Shall we get going on the tour then, lads?" Harry asks, looking around at the boys.

"YEAH!" they all cheer as they stand up to race each other to the door.

Liam stands back with me, watching as the rest of the boys begin wrestling with each other to be the first to get the door, effectively getting them all stuck in the doorway.

"They are an interesting bunch, aren't they?" I ask through a chuckle.

Liam turns to me, laughing. "Just wait. You haven't seen anything yet."
