The night air in Maryland had a crisp bite to it, the kind that made your breath visible with every exhale. The flames from the bonfire crackled and danced, illuminating the faces of the small group gathered around. But not everyone was enjoying the warmth of the fire. You had slipped away from the crowd, the noise and chatter overwhelming, needing a moment to yourself.

You settled by the edge of the yard, sitting on the cold ground, your legs crossed beneath you. The cool night air nipped at your skin, but you didn't mind. Sometimes, being alone was just what you needed.

Your thoughts drifted until you heard footsteps approaching. You glanced up and immediately recognized him—Luigi, one of your friends' friends. He was tall, a little over 5'10", with his signature curly hair slightly tousled, his olive skin glowing under the soft light. His smile was easy, charming, but there was something endearing about the way he walked toward you with a slight hesitation, as if unsure if he should interrupt your solitude.

"Hey, ___," he said, his voice low and friendly.

"Hey, Luigi," you replied, trying not to sound too nervous. He was cute—like, really cute—but you weren't sure how to act around him.

He slid down onto the cold ground next to you, keeping a little distance, but close enough that you could feel the warmth of his presence. His deep brown eyes flicked over to you, a playful smirk tugging at his lips. He was always so easygoing, but tonight, there was a hint of shyness in the way he kept glancing at you.

"How's it going?" he asked, his tone casual, as if the two of you had been friends for years.

"Good... just, you know, needed some space," you replied, shifting uncomfortably on the ground. You hated how nervous you felt, but there was something about him that made your heart race a little faster.

He nodded, glancing back at the bonfire. "Yeah, it gets a little loud in there. I figured you might be out here. It's nice... quiet."

You both sat there for a few moments, the warmth of the fire on the other side of the yard drawing your attention. Luigi looked over at you again, his expression softening.

"I like your jacket," he said suddenly, breaking the silence. "It looks good on you."

You blinked, a little surprised by the compliment. "Thanks," you replied, trying not to let your face betray the nerves swirling inside you. "I think it's, like, cozy... you know, for this weather."

"Definitely," he agreed. "Cold out here, huh?"

You both laughed softly, the tension easing just a little. Luigi was the kind of guy who made small talk feel comfortable, and even though you were shy, it didn't feel so awkward with him.

Before you knew it, there was a brief pause, and then he stretched his legs out in front of him, his hand brushing against yours. You froze for a split second, heart pounding in your chest. Did he do that on purpose? Was that... intentional?

"Do you wanna go back inside?" he asked, looking at you with a small, warm smile.

You nodded quickly. "Yeah, it's pretty cold out here."

The two of you got to your feet, both a little awkward but still smiling. As you walked back to the bonfire area, you could feel his presence beside you—like an unspoken connection, something that felt so natural, yet so new.

When you rejoined the group, you took a seat, glancing over at Luigi. He caught your gaze for a moment, offering you another smile before turning back to the conversation happening around him. You couldn't help but feel a little flutter in your chest. It was just a simple interaction—nothing extraordinary, but for some reason, it felt like the start of something that could be.

You sat back, your mind racing as you processed the brief moment you had just shared with him. Was he feeling the same way? Probably not. But... just maybe, there was something there. Something that would grow into something more.

You hoped so.
