âI was beginning to think something had happened to you.â Kieran looked up from where he sat as I entered the private chamber at the Red Pearl. âI expected to hear from you sooner than this.â
âYeah.â Closing the door, I crossed the room and sat on the chair across from him. âThis was the first I could get away.â
Kieran arched a brow.
Well, it had been the first time I felt comfortable leaving the castleâleaving Poppy. She was with Tawny, and with the old servantsâ door barred, and her stash of weapons removedâwhich had been shockingly diverseâI felt confident sheâd stay put. For a little while. But I hadnât left her unguarded. Jansen watched over her from the hall. Not that I currently worried about any threats to her. With the Duke and Mazeen both out of the picture, I was her greatest danger.
I was more concerned about her going on a rampage.
âI heard the other guard will no longer be an issue,â Kieran stated.
I took a shallow breath. âNo, he wonât be.â
âYou donât sound that happy about it.â
Feeling his stare on me, I forced a smile. âShould I be?â
âNot overly so, but you soundâ¦â Picking up the decanter of whiskey, he poured me a drink. âRegretful.â
I sighed, taking it. And then leaned back, holding the glass on the arm of the chair. âYou sure you donât have a Seer in your bloodline?â
Kieran laughed. âDoesnât take one to notice the conflict in your voice.â His head tilted. âOr the beard youâre growing.â
Snorting, I ran my hand over my jaw, realizing I hadnât shaved. I squinted, dropping my hand back to the other arm of the chair. âThe Duchess expects word from the capital either today or tomorrow.â
âI heard.â Kieran propped a booted foot on the low table between us. âJansen told me. Iâve also been promoted.â He gave a broad, mocking smile. âTo Huntsmen.â
âI donât think thatâs considered a promotion.â
He laughed. âNeither do I, but Iâve been cleared to escort the Maiden to the capital once the time comes.â
The .
I took a drink of whiskey. The shit scorched my throat as I glanced at the bed. I didnât see Kieran and Circe there. I saw Poppy and me. Gods, this fucking chamber.
âYou know, we could already be gone.â Kieran scratched at his chest. âWe should be.â
âI know, butâ¦things got rough.â I wasnât sure how much Jansen had shared with Kieran, but he didnât speak up. âHer other guard? Vikter? He was like a father to her and died in front of her.â The second drink of whiskey was easier to swallow. âShe sort of lost it after that. Killed an Ascended.â
âThat, I hadnât been told.â His brows rose. âWhy did she do that?â
âThe bastard laughed at Vikterâs death. She hacked him to pieces.â A brief smile tugged at my lips. âAnd I fucking mean pieces.â
âShit,â he murmured.
âYeah.â
Kieran was quiet as he eyed me. Didnât last. âAnd you couldnât get her to the Grove in the days before you learned that the Crown would likely summon her back?â
âCould I?â I laughed dryly, downing the rest of the liquor. âShe was self-medicating, and before you think that wouldâve made it easier, she wasnât eating or drinking. Having her weak for the kind of journey we have to take her on wouldnât be good.â
I set the glass aside. âBut here we are now, given a boon, have we not?â
âI suppose thatâs one way of looking at it, but yes. Now, we have permission. That means we can get a hell of a lot farther before we raise any suspicion,â he said, fingers tapping his bent knee. âBut that also means weâll have others to deal with.â
âIt does, but we can probably make it to New Haven before she ever finds out the truth,â I countered. âBefore, weâd have been fighting to keep her under control from here to thereâand trust me, we want to delay that, she can kick some ass.â
âI imagine she can if she hacked an Ascended to pieces.â Kieran was still eyeing me in that fucking annoyingly astute way of his. The tapping of his fingers halted, and I tensed. âYouâre acting weird, just so you know.â
I started to deny it, but what was the point? My head was a fucking mess. I flicked my gaze to the rafters in the ceiling. âSheâs survived some horrible shit and has the scars and strength to prove it. Sheâs brave, Kieran. Passionate. Hungry for life and experience.â My jaw worked. âSheâs fierce, even a little vicious when provoked.â I paused. âOr a lot vicious. You were right when you said weâd underestimated her. Sheâs nothing like we expected.â
âSounds like Iâll like her.â
âYou will.â I smiled at that. âShe doesnât know the truth about the Ascended, but I know she doesnât agree with a lot of the practices, especially regarding the Rites, and even her position among them. She doesnât understand why sheâs Chosen, and I knowâ¦â I worked my neck from side to side. âI know that if she had a choice, she wouldnât have picked the life of the Maiden.â
âYou sure about that?â
âPositive.â I exhaled roughly. âAnd even though we still donât know why sheâs Chosen or what role she plays in the whole Ascension, itâs safe to assume itâs going to be some fucked-up shit.â
âNo doubt.â He reached for the decanter and poured himself a drink. âWhat are you thinking?â
âIâm thinking sheâ¦she doesnât deserve whatever the fuck they have planned for her. She deserves a chance to have a life,â I said.
âWell, if the plans havenât changed, Cas,â he said, and my gaze shot to his. âThen what does all of that mean?â
âNothing.â I laughed, but the sound was without humor. âIt means nothing at the end of the day.â
Kieran shook his head. âYou sure about that?â
Absolutely not. It meant that Poppy deserved a future, one that allowed her to live, but that wasnât something I would involve Kieran in.
So, I lied. âYes.â
