With the three of us still on the ground, Li Xia whispered to me in bafflement, âShould I say yes or no?â
The ball had been thrown in my court.
The old man kept his gaze on my watch and it looked like he had no intention of looking away.
Both Dahai and Li Xia got to their feet and pulled me up.
âGo along with it,â I muttered.
Dahai and I were used to the ghost marketâs ways but not Li Xia. I was afraid that he wouldnât be able to lie his way through this, but luckily, he proved me wrong.
âHeâs told me about it,â Li Xia answered in a matter-of-fact tone.
âItâs been so many years but the ruleâs still being broken.â
âWhat rule?â Dahai asked.
âYouâre Li Baiâs grandson so you have the right to continue this conversation,â the old man said before pointing at me. âGuy with the watch, who is Li Bai to you?â
âStep-grandson, is that fine with you?â I tried.
He shifted his focus to Dahai. âWhat about you, Fatty?â
âAlso his step-grandson,â Dahai blurted out after a brief pause.
âIâm only going to talk to one person and he has to be directly related to Li Bai and he has to have possession of the watch.â
I sighed and handed the watch to Li Xia. âCall me so I can listen,â I whispered before pulling Dahai away.
âWhy did you return the watch just like that? Are you not afraid that heâll run away?â Dahai asked anxiously.
âHe knows he canât do this alone. Heâll need our help,â I argued.
My phone rang after a few beats.
I accepted the call and muted it.
âWhoâs that?â Dahai asked.
âShh, just listen,â I instructed before putting it on speakerphone.
...
âWhyâs your hand in your pocket?â a frail voice sounded.
âI need to wipe my glasses,â Li Xia explained, fishing out a cloth of some sort.
âWhen did Li Bai tell you these things?â
âHeâs dead,â Li Xia told him.
âDid he write this in his will?â
âKinda.â
âWho are those two guys?â
âFriends.â
âWhy do they have the watch?â
âThrough my grandfatherâs friend.â
âToo messy, I donât want to know. Are you here to take the jade away?â
âMy grandfather died too suddenly but he did ask me to look for you so here I am.â
âHe wants me to tell you?â
âYes.â
âI donât think thatâs all he meant. He has his eyes on my jade.â
Li Xia kept quiet and I started to get nervous.
After some time, the old man started, âThe seven of us joined the army in the first year the devils invaded the village.â
âIâve heard this from Grandfather.â
âWhat did he say?â
âThat you guys became soldiers and fought the devils.â
âDetails?â
Li Xia fell silent and I recalled him saying that his grandfather shared little despite his deep interest in that subject.
The old man continued, âLetâs not talk about the devils, your grandfather hadnât killed even a chicken in his life. We had expected to fight at the front line right after military training but were detained all the way Northwestern Xinjiang.
âXinjiang? Thatâs completely different from what Grandfather told me.â
âHow so?â
âWait, I have two diaries in my bag. They contain Grandfatherâs experiences battling the devils.â
âAll seven of us have a diary like this, with the same opening that was written by our leader. They arenât exactly fake, of course, since thereâs information about the excavated objects.â
Excavated objects? Like the golden pocket watch? I thought back to the content in the book.
âIt was written by one person? Why?â Li Xia asked.
Li Xiaâs voice was a notch louder than before. He had every right to feel angry since all that he had known was being subverted.
Dahai was equally stunned by their conversation.
âWhy? Itâs the nationâs arrangements to conceal what we were going to guard.â
âWhat?â
âLop Nor.â
âLop Nor?â Li Xia repeated.
âFrom 1937 to 1957, the seven of us were stationed troops who had only one mission â to excavate historical relics in Lop Nor.â
âGuard Lop Nor? Your jade... pisces jade?â Li Xia mumbled.
âLooks like you know about it. He told you?â
âPisces jade and Peng Jiamu? Arenât you Han Dong? All these are searchable on the net.â
âPeng Jiamu? Heâs our leader, the one who wrote our diaries in order to create the illusion that we were resisting the Japanese because our guarding of Lop Nor had to be kept a secret.â
âItâs still discoverable through the net,â Li Xia informed.
âThatâs inevitable since we went against our superiors. We stole the items in Lop Nor and used the books to blend into a defense troop in Beijing. We stayed there until retirement but the secret was eventually revealed due to uneven distribution of our ill-gotten gains.â
âYouâre saying that the watch came from Lop Nor?â
