âGrandfather didnât really share much with me,â Li Xia told us.
âWe have the leaderâs address so we can work from there.â
âSo weâll find him with the pretense of visiting my grandfatherâs battle mates?â Li Xia asked.
âYeah, not appropriate for you to do the visitation, eh?â Dahai noted.
âGrannyâs probably already done that. It should be fine,â Li Xia answered.
âHow do you know?â I questioned.
âYou said that the spirit wanted a tuft of hair or something? My Granny got it, didnât she?â Li Xia rationalized.
âLetâs go then,â Dahai said.
I cut in. âWait. Donât we need a plan?â
âMy grandfather died at age 84. How much time do you think the leader has left?â Li Xia said.
âLetâs hurry, then,â I replied without hesitation this time.
When we arrived at Han Dongâs residence, Li Xia immediately knocked on the door.
A middle-aged man greeted us and asked for the purpose of our visit.n/ô/vel/b//in dot c//om
âIs Grandfather Han Dong around? Iâm Li Baiâs grandson. They were once battle mates and even gathered at a reunion a year back,â Li Xia informed.
âAn old lady came to look for my dad, too. If youâd like to talk to him, you can find him in the nursing home. Heâs been in there for a long time,â he informed us.
âNursing home?â Li Xia repeated.
The middle-aged man nodded. âHeâs been suffering from dementia and I canât take proper care of him.â
âBut he was fine just last year,â Li Xia commented.
âOld age. He was fine last year but he had a fall half a year ago and deteriorated,â Han Dongâs son explained.
The three of us left Han Dongâs house and headed down to the nearest nursing home.
âHeâs not lying, is he?â Dahai asked.
âUnlikely. Didnât Granny get his hair?â
âCould he have gotten the illness from the curse instead of death,â Dahai suggested.
âPossibly,â I agreed.
âOr perhaps this watch requires a conscious soul for it to work? Dementia patients arenât completely conscious, are they?â Li Xia proposed.
âMaybe,â I hedged.
We reached the simple-looking nursing home, where the walls were covered in vines. It mustâve been established for a long time. We entered and the security had us register our ID and contact number before letting us in.
We asked about Han Dong and the nurses brought us to him immediately.
We were led to a small garden corner where an old man in a wheelchair was sitting motionlessly.
âThatâs Han Dong,â a nurse introduced.
We approached him slowly, with Li Xia standing in front.
âHi,â Li Xia started but gained no response from the old man.
âHello?â
âHello, sir?â Li Xia greeted insistently but to no avail.
âA fool?â he asked.
I walked over and looked at him straight in the eye.
He was really old and his face was covered with wrinkles.
He had on a padded wool sweater. I followed his gaze, discovering only a small tree and nothing else.
Dahai sighed dejectedly. âThere goes our lead. Look at him.â
âThis is probably why his son sent him here in the first place. He wanted the house for himself since his old man is none the wiser.â
âTrue. Probably how your granny had managed to get a lock of his hair, too,â Dahai said, reaching out for the old manâs hair but evoking no response.
Li Xia shook his head. âDefinitely a fool.â
âYour granny couldâve easily smashed him with a brick. Should I do it now to avenge your grandparents?â Dahai joked.
âStop playing around,â Li Xia admonished with a roll of his eyes.
I pointed at the necklace the old man was wearing. âDonât you guys find this odd?â
âWhat are you pointing at?â Dahai asked.
âWhy is a man thatâs over 80 years old wears a jade necklace?â I said.
âOld people do whatever they like. Let me take this down. This will fetch a good price at the market.â Dahai extended his hand toward the old manâs neck.
âThatâs not too kind, is it?â Li Xia commented.
âHe wonât even know. Plus, Iâm just looking. My mouth is dirty but not my character.â
The next thing we knew, the old man had Dahaiâs hand in a death grip.
âF*ck! Let go, Dahai!â I shouted automatically.
âHeâs so strong,â Dahai exclaimed.
After a round of tugging, it looked as though Dahaiâs hand was going to be ripped off.
I pulled Dahai back, thinking that the old manâs strength was impossibly extraordinary.
âHelp,â I called out for Li Xia, who immediately joined in the tug of war.
â3, 2, 1, pull!â Dahai shouted from the front.
With a final tug, the three of us fell to the ground while the old man remained unfazed.
Thankfully, no one was around to witness the event.
A fish-shaped jade pendant that was vibrantly green suddenly appeared on the old manâs neck.
âThis guy is unbelievably strong,â Dahai panted.
âStrong? You gotta be kidding, heâs a monster,â Li Xia cried out.
âDahai!â I shouted.
âWhat is it?
âCan you identify the purity of the jade?â
âThatâs gonna be hard, but it looks valuable,â he answered.
âThat jade has an evil aura. Could it have been snatched from the Japanese, too?â
âLike the watch?â
I took out the watch and compared it with the jade.
Upon seeing the watch in my hand, the old man opened his mouth wide.
âWhy... whyâs it in... in your hands?â he stammered.
The three of us exchanged shocked glances.
âItâs mine,â I answered.
âYours? Itâs the nationâs,â the old man replied.
He spoke perfectly fine this time, much to our amazement.
âThe nationâs?â I repeated.
âWho is Li Bai to you?â he asked me before Li Xia interrupted,â Iâm his grandson.â
âHe scraped it open and told you about Lop Nor?â he asked before getting up from his wheelchair.
