âNot dead?â Dahai asked.
I pulled him close and whispered, âShe thinks that the watch killed her husband so she wants to take revenge using my doll. She probably doesnât know the situation so you gotta ask her in another way.â
He nodded.
âYeah, your doll doesnât work. Heâs still living well. Youâre just a scammer, arenât you?â she accused.
I said, âWhy do you think Iâve come today?â
She looked at her grandson. âHow do you know them? Why have you brought them here?â
âThey were sending posters and I recognized your face from it. I did not expect them to ask such strange questions,â he defended.
âWhy exactly are you two looking for me?â the old lady asked, puzzled.
âIâm here to bring the watch back because of the evil aura I felt from it. Just like you, Iâve spent a lot of effort to unravel its secret.â
âThat watch killed my husband, didnât it?â she asked agitatedly.
Dahai tugged at my shirt in warning.
âI got this, donât worry,â I told him confidently before turning back to the lady. âNot really.â
âWhat do you mean?â
I pointed to the wall and answered, âI did not take it seriously before but I dreamed of a spirit telling me that this leader isnât just a simple person.â
She began, âHe killed my husband?â
Her grandson cut in, âWho are you guys? Donât try to cheat my grandmother. Why are you acting so shadily? Who is this someone? What spirit? And how do you know them, Granny?â
I gestured at Dahai meaningfully and said, âHeâll chat with you outside. Weâre just talking to her and we have no intention to deceive her.â
Dahai retrieved his wallet and handed a wad of cash to the man. âLetâs talk elsewhere.â
âItâs not about the money. I can keep quiet but I must be here or how else would I know what you two are up to?â
âFine, watch if you want.â
âTheyâre not bad people, Grandson,â the old lady reassured.
I continued, âThat spirit wasnât able to deal with the leader because the leaderâs an evil sorcerer as well. The spiritâs fallen into his hands so Iâm willing to help you, but you must tell me the leaderâs name and residential history. Itâs the only way Iâd stand a chance against him.â
The old lady nodded immediately. âI can tell you everything. Thereâs an honorary manual on the table. All the contact numbers and addresses of the old soldiers are in it. His name is Han Dong.â
I walked over to the table and flipped through the manual, quickly finding Han Dongâs contact and address.
I snapped a picture of it with my phone. âIâll need some time to think over the plan. Iâm actually supposed to charge you, but since the spirit is in his hands, Iâll make sure to get rid of him too so donât worry.â
Comforted, she acquiesced with a nod.
Her grandson asked, âWhat are you two trying to do? What are you talking about?â
I took the wad of cash from Dahai and handed it to him. âHave you seen anyone scamming your grandmotherâs assets before passing you another sum of money?â
âWhat? Wait, please get things straight before you leave,â he urged, clearly confused.
âAsk your grandmother. Youâll know if sheâs willing to tell you.â
I pulled Dahai out of the apartment.
Outside the house, he asked, âWhatâs going on? The watch doesnât work on everyone?â
âI have no idea. I have his address and number here. Can you get someone to check on him?â
âThere are people who can do that in the market. Iâll look around.â
âAre they reliable? We took so long to find a harmless old lady,â I commented doubtfully.
âWe have his number and address, it will definitely be easier.â
I sent him the photo before adding, âThings are getting increasingly complicated.â
âNot really. He mentioned that the watch was a seized item,â Dahai said, holding a book.
My eyes widened. âWait, you took the book with you?â
âYou pulled me out so quickly and I just forgot about it. Should we return it?â
âNo, no! Let me have a look.â
The watch was indeed taken away from the Japanese but there werenât any other information about it.
âChina only attacked Japan in WWII?â I asked Dahai.
âYeah, and maybe North Korea? Iâm not really sure.ân/o/vel/b//in dot c//om
âWhich nations did Japan attack?â
âHow am I supposed to know that? Maybe her grandson would know since heâs a fan.â
I stopped in my tracks, my mind whirring.
Dahai took one look at my face and sighed. âWeâre heading back to ask him, arenât we?â
âShould we let him know about the watch?â
âWhy? Do you wanna add one to the team?â
âWe know the rough history of this watch but nothing about WWII. That guy mustâve taken a liking to military affairs because of his grandfather. His grandfather died because of this watch, so I think itâs alright if we pull the man in. He should be interested in it and weâll be able to form a clearer picture.â
âSounds reasonable,â Dahai agreed.
âShall I go ask him and see if heâs interested?â
He nodded.
We went back to knock on the door and the grandson opened it for us.
âWhy did come back?â he asked.
âShe didnât tell you, did she?â I said knowingly.
âYeah. Sheâs back to cooking and refuses to say anything else.â
âWe can tell you everything if you agree to help us.â
âDeal,â he accepted.
âLetâs talk outside. Bring your grandfatherâs books along.â
