Chengdu Zoo.
A young panda was happily eating bamboo shoots.
âThatâs the Fatty?â a few people asked from a few distances away.
âYeah, the strongest of the batch. Shouldnât be a problem.â
âItâs for Australia so donât overlook it. I donât really know your rules, but remember to talk to the zookeeper more.â
âDonât worry, Officer Xia. Leave it to me and there wonât be any problems. Itâs not the first time Iâve done this.â
âIâll submit the application tomorrow and have it transported to Australia in three days.â
Next day, in the Zooâs office.
âIs that fat panda ready, Xiaowen?â
â...â
âWhy arenât you speaking?â
âThe rabies and pestilence reinforcement jabs arenât done yet.â
âWhat? Shouldnât that have been done in Spring?â
âOriginally, yes, but the needle Doctor Zhang brought that day was damaged by the panda and he did not bring any extras. We had to postpone the jab for the strongest panda, which happens to be Fatty. However, Doctor Zhang was sent to Beijing to treat the pandas there and we just forgot about it until three weeks later when the pandas were given the reinforcement jab.â
âWhy didnât you report this earlier?â
âI didnât expect it to be a serious problem. No one predicted that Australia would request a rental so early this time.â
âBecause those pandas over there are of age, if we wait any longer, they wonât be able to return by air. How can you make such a rudimentary mistake?â
âNot having the reinforcements jabs isnât actually a big deal. No one would really check back on the files.â
âGet out and change the records.â
âChanging records isnât a problem, but to add a completely non-existent record is impossible since there wonât be any barcode.â
âYou, you... youâll be the death of me. Weâll talk about this later. Let me give Officer Xia a call first.â
The man picked his phone up and dialed some numbers.
âOfficer Xia, is it possible to switch the pandas? I was told that Fattyâs personality isnât suitable. A little feisty.â
âIâve already handed the name list so thereâs nothing we can do. It should be fine since the pandaâs going to be locked up anyway. The foreigners wonât know it.â
âOh, okay. Thatâs all then, Officer Xia.â
He hung up with his brows furrowed.
âHow is it, Leader?â
âWhere are the pandas who are completely vaccinated and ready to be rented out?â
âThereâs a Chalk that will be sent to Hangzhou Zoo.â
âAlright, switch them. We canât add a record, but we can change the names, right? Itâs fine if the panda without vaccine goes to Hangzhou. We can easily pay Doctor Zhang to settle it sometime later.â
âNo, Leader, we canât do this.â
âAre you telling me that you canât even do that? Are you going to take responsibility when the panda goes over to Australia and infects somebody or gets sick? Or are you under the impression that Iâll be able to handle it?â
âBut...â
âBut what? Do you have a better idea?â
âChalk is a male panda, arranged to be brought up in Hangzhou and then elsewhere to reproduce, while Fatty is a female panda. Forgetting the jabs is as serious as mixing up the sexes.â
âHangzhou Zoo, you said?â the man asked nervously.
âYes.â
He scrolled through his phone and made another call.
âClassmate Chen.â
âWho is this?â
âOld Wang! Donât you remember me?â
âOh. Yes, I do. What is it? Somethingâs up, isnât it?â
âYouâre as wise as ever, old friend. This matterâs neither big nor small. Are you still working at Hangzhou Zoo?â
âWhy? Something wrong with the pandas?â
âWise indeed! We got the pandaâs sex wrong. Do you remember Chalk? The one weâre about to bring over?â
âAre you kidding me?â
âI wish! Iâll need you to help with this.â
âAre there no other pandas to replace it?â
âYou should know that there arenât many who were born in the same month. Itâs extremely difficult to replace him with one thatâs more than half a year apart and I canât fake this matter away. Can you see if itâs possible to report it to the higher-ups and settle it within our own department?â
âWhat are you proposing?â
âWeâll send Chalk over, and when itâs time to breed, youâll just say that itâs a fail. Weâll wait a few more years and see if we can switch another panda over. How about that?â
âSurely you know that my position is largely dependent on the success of the breeding? How are you going to compensate that?â
âPandas have difficulty bearing children, to begin with, so Iâm sure your future shouldnât be held up by these few pandas. How about I give you some publicity during the election, and pay for the expenses of bringing up that panda?â
âI can keep quiet about this, but you will have to take responsibility if anything goes wrong, alright?â
âFor sure. Donât worry, I wonât give you any trouble.â
He hung up and sighed a breath of relief.
âAll settled?â
âIâm surprised that you even dare to ask. Itâs all settled. Switch them.â
âBut what about the sexes?â
âBring the one in Australia back and send Chalk over. Whoâs going to care about its sex when itâs all alone. Weâre gonna switch them back in a few yearsâ time anyway. Iâve already smoothed everything out in Hangzhouâs side.â
âThank you, Leader.â
âGo, go, go. I donât want to see you any longer than I have to. Youâve given me nothing but trouble all day. Next time, be more careful when you work!â
...
âFatty,â an adult panda called as he snuggled close to Fatty.
The other young pandas, including Chalk, went over as well.
âWeâve received some information. Your mission is to go to Australia and work with the koalas to get rid of the rats in the disease prevention room. Donât let the humans know that weâre sentient beings, you hear me?â the adult panda instructed.
âBut Teacher, Iâve only been learning for half a year, why are you giving me such an important task? Iâm going there alone and Iâm afraid that I wonât be able to perform my duties well,â Fatty replied frustratedly as he munched on his shoots.
âIâve taught you all that you needed to know. The koalas Australia brought over will return and exchange knowledge, too. Itâs a double security net so donât worry. Youâll just have to act like a panda. Can you do that?â
âIâll try my best,â Fatty answered.
âTheyâre coming. Act happier,â the adult panda said.
âAlright, Teacher.â
Fatty grabbed the shoots with both hands and chewed on them enthusiastically.
âGood, Fatty. Iâm proud of you!â the adult panda whispered.
âThatâs Fatty. To be sent to Australia. Donât get it wrong,â Xiaowen instructed, pointing at Chalk.
âGot it,â two men answered before bringing Chalk into a special container.
Fatty looked on in shock. âYou got the wrong panda!â
But no matter how loud Fatty shouted, the humans werenât able to hear it.
The adult panda was taken aback as well. He mumbled, âHumans are dumb creatures. This is bad. We must report this quick.â
There was only helplessness on Chalkâs face as he was taken away.
