I put all my concentration into manipulating that stupid rock and when I finally lifted it off the ground it hit my forehead. Hellen couldnât help but laugh and I joined in.
âThis is too hard,â I complained.
âYou just have to focus.â
âWhat do you think Iâve been doing these past few weeks?â
âThatâs not what I meant,â she said. âYouâve been working really hard.â
âThen why canât I do this?â
âIt takes time and practice,â she told.
We were in one of the rooms in the Conference Hall building. She was sitting across from me, on a small wooden table between us was a Star Stone from Virgo.
âI hope youâre not distracted by the wedding planning,â she worried.
âNo, itâs no trouble at all,â I started. âItâs fun to plan an event. Besides, Iâm not the only one.â
Hellen and Alfred had decided to have their wedding in one of the huge rooms in the Conference Hall building. It was only a couple of their friends and some of my friends.
âDo you have your dress?â I asked.
âIâm still working on it,â she smiled. I could tell she was excited but also a little scared.
âAre you sure about the time?â
âIn a week.â She shrugged.
âI think a week would be fine but you and Alfred should discuss it together,â I said.
âWe have been talking about it,â she played with her black hair. There were grey streaks, indicating she hadnât dyed it in a few days.
My insides turned all of a sudden. After so much Astral Travel Iâd been feeling queasy. The Star Stone manipulation wasnât helping.
âThose earrings look good,â she complimented.
âThanks,â I smiled. My ears still hurt from the piercing. Now I had two earrings in each ear. Lyra really did a good job, she had given me her small star earrings. Four of them, of course .
âWho did them for you?â Hellen asked.
âMy friend Lyra,â I told. âShe did them for some of the other girls too.â
Hellen nodded. There was a long pause. I tried to move the stone again but it gave me a headache. I didnât give up though. I concentrated on it as if I was trying to conduct Virgo. No luck. I only moved it a little and then it toppled over. I retrieved it from the floor.
Hellen opened and closed her mouth a bunch of times, beads of sweat had appeared on her forehead. She looked like she wanted to tell me something.
âAre you okay?â I asked.
âI wanted to ask you something, Annabelle.â She sat up straight.
âGo ahead,â
âItâs about...â she hesitated. âItâs about Alec.â
âAlec?â I repeated.
âYes,â she said. âWhen you first met him, how was he?â
âI donât understand,â I puzzled.
âHow was he? I mean, was he doing fine?â she worried.
âUmmm...â I thought for a moment. âHe seemed like a really nice guy,â
âThatâs not what I asked.â she said.
âHe was doing fine,â I mumbled. âI mean, what do you want to know about him?â
âJust want to know if heâs doing well without...â she trailed off.
âWhatâs wrong?â
âI suppose you deserve to know,â she said to no one in particular. âIâve been keeping this inside of me for way too long. I talked to Alfred he doesnât seem to have a problem with it and...â
âWoah. Hold up!â I demanded. âWhat are you talking about?â
âItâs a long and complicated story,â she told. âItâs something to do with your family,â
For some reason, I thought of the letter Alfred had given me that was from mom. âWhat about it?â
She sighed, then shifted in her seat. âWhat I am about to tell you is a complicated story but eventually youâll find it a bit amusing and youâll know why itâs important that you know,â
She rolled up her sleeve and I knew she was going to show me her Sign. I had been wanting to know what Constellation she was from.
âMy name is Hellen Hydrus,â she said. My eyes nearly popped out at those words. âI was first married to Jaxon Hydra, he was also my cousin. Heâs the one who named Stellaregoâs capital city, Hydrus after my Constellation. I left Jaxon after I found out his true intentions of stealing all the Stars. But I didnât just leave Jaxon, I left the title of Queen, a job that I valued and most of all, I left my son, Alec Hydra.â
âWhat?â I yelped.
âYes,â she nodded. âAlec is my son but he was an infant when I left so he doesnât know Iâm his mother. Jaxon didnât let me take him because at the time he was the heir to the throne and he was a descendant of Hydra. I came to Crimsyn State, Jaxon was furious with me. See, we were cousins and we were married to secure our familyâs relations.â
âAfter a few years, Jaxon married Sophie Serpens. Sheâs mine and Jaxonâs cousin, they had Lydia and Keegan Hydra. Till this day I havenât spoken to my son, Alec. I have been banished from Stellaregno. the only mercy Jaxon had was that he spared my life.â
âThatâs got nothing to do with my family,â I said. Still shocked.
She showed me her Sign. The symbol of Hydrus. It was complicated, hard to describe. âWhen I left Jaxon he removed Hydraâs Sign from me. Hydra and Hydrus arenât much different though.â
âWhat has this got to do with my family?â I wondered out loud.
âHereâs the complicated part,â she sighed.
âOh, that wasnât the complicated part?â
âMy younger sister was Ariana Hydrus,â she continued.
âI met her in Celestial Gardens,â I remembered suddenly. My eyes widened at the implication. I gasped, getting up, almost knocking the chair over. âYouâre related to my grandmother!â
Hellen stared at me as if to imply that I was being overdramatic. I cleared my throat and sat down.
âShe was married to Grayson Ophiuchus,â she said. âHe was your motherâs father. Your mother, Eloise Ophiuchus was their only child. I was your motherâs aunt.â
âIs there anything else about my family that I donât know?â I asked, though Pops and Grandma had told me that part, I still hadnât imagined it sounding this complicated out loud.
âJust listen,â she demanded. âPlease donât get confused.â
âWhy would I be confused?â I said. âMy motherâs aunt is marrying my grandfather!â I tried not to look too uncomfortable.
âPlease donât say it like that,â she begged.
âIâm sorry,â I sighed. âThis is too much. So, you were my momâs aunt, married to Jaxon Hydra, the King. Which means you were the Queen, and youâre Alecâs mother. He doesnât know that. My grandmother, Ariana Hydrus Ophiuchus died in the assassination along with all the other Ophiuchus. And now, youâre marrying my dadâs father, Alfred Virgo.â
âYes,â she confirmed, a little embarrassed.
âNot to mention, I was about to marry your son,â I added, horrified. I gasped at another realization. âAlec is Momâs cousin.â I shuddered. âEwww!â
My mind shouted. I hoped her spirit heard me.
âItâs not so bad,â Hellen said. âAt that time we didnât even think about the fact that Jaxon was my cousin. That type of relationship doesnât matter in the royal household.â
I swallowed down the meal I had earlier, threatening to come out. âWhy doesnât Alec know youâre his mother?â
âI made Jaxon swear he wouldnât tell anyone. No one in the kingdom is allowed to speak of it. they removed Hydrus just like they did with Ophiuchus. Jaxon took it out on my family. Theyâre all gone now.â
âIâm sorry,â I wanted to get up and give her a hug. Her eyes were glassy but there was also something satisfying about this for her.
âIt feels good to finally let that out in the open,â she sighed in relief.
âIâm going to tell Alec about all this myself. He may not have inherited Hydrus from me. He may be full Hydra but I can change him into a better person. Heâll lead us with pride. Heâll be a part of this revolution. Alec will help us defeat the Hydras.â
âWait a minute!â I yelped. âYou canât do that. Alec is a Hydra heâs going to lead the Hydraâs. You have me.â
âWell, if Alfred can change you into a fighter I can do the same with Alec,â she defended.
âWait, so, you donât want an Ophiuchus as the leader of Stellaregno?â I asked. Itâs not that I wanted to lead a kingdom but I didnât think it would still be a Hydra on the throne.
âWhen I tell him everything. When he knows the truth. Heâll be on my side and we will fight together,â she said confidently.
âAnd youâre certain heâll understand?â I asked.
âI am hopeful,â she answered in a low voice. âNow, continue.â she pointed to the Star Stone but I couldnât focus.
âIâm sorry,â I got to my feet. âI have to go,â
I exited the room, not paying attention to Hellen calling my name. I couldnât believe everything she had just told me.
âWait, wait!â Tristan and Lewis held up there hands.
âTell us again,â Lyra said. She was back to being Lyra today. Thank Gemini for that.
And explained to them my entire family tree, including the part where I met my motherâs parents in Celestial Gardens. I went through it one more time in my head: Hellen Hydrus, sister to my grandmother, Ariana Hydrus Ophiuchus was married to Jaxon Hydra, father of Alec Hydra. Alec was my mother, Eloise Ophiuchus Virgoâs cousin. Making him my uncle. My dadâs father, Alfred Virgo is marrying my motherâs aunt, Hellen Hydrus. Sidenote: I was engaged to Alec, my uncle.
Not complicated at all.
For a minute they were silent, exchanging looks. Lewis raised his hand. âI have a question,â he spoke innocently.
I glared at him, my eyes narrowed. âAfter hearing all of that you only have one question!â My voice boomed, almost everyone in the cafeteria turned to me. I cleared my throat and lowered my gaze. After a while they all came out laughing.
âThis is not funny,â I demanded. Lewis nearly fell off his chair at the sound of my voice.
âYou have a great family tree.â Tristan gulped.
âI canât tell if youâre teasing her or not,â Amara spoke.
âObviously I am,â he confirmed.
âYeah,â Lewis agreed. âNo offence but thereâs nothing about your family which is worth not getting teased about.â
I grunted.
âAt least your family doesnât believe in superstitions,â Lyra pouted. She was still upset about her split-personality disorder. Lyra told us that Lyla, her second personality wasnât aware of this. Amara had helped her realize that she had two personalities but Lyra didnât know that before.
âBut-but-this-is-this is....confusing!â I stammered.
âBut, now, you have another reason to not marry Alec.â Tristan smiled with contentment.
âTristan!â Lyra scolded. âThis is not about you.â
Lewis gave Lyra a high-five. Amara giggled.
âIâm not talking about myself!â Tristan said defensively.
Lewis cleared his throat, âWhat she meant was: this is not about Tristan and Belle.â he rephrased. Lyra and Lewis laughed uncontrollably.
I groaned and Tristan tried not to blush. âWill you guys stop it?â Amara demanded, though she was smiling too.
âBelle, why are you so worried?â Tristan asked.
I opened my mouth but couldnât find the right words. âI donât know,â
âItâs nothing,â Lyra said. âYouâre just worried about that egg thing.â
Tristan had told them about the Star Stone scenario. It was still in the Conference Hall, Alfred kept it looked at night and didnât let anyone except me and Hellen check on it. It had more fissures and cracks now, even though it had only been a few days since Alfred had told me what that was.
âYeah, how is your snake doing?â Lewis asked.
âI think itâs about to hatch,â I had a tingling sensation in the back of my head. I heard a voice hissing, Rasalhague.
âHow can you be sure?â Amara asked while Lyra looked disgusted.
âI have a feeling,â I said, sounding creepy.
âOhh...â Lyra said. She pushed away her plate, as if her dinner wasnât appetizing anymore.
âNot weird at all,â Lewis mumbled.
I rolled my eyes at him. Just then, Anthony appeared in the door frame of the cafeteria. âAnnabelle,â he said loud enough for only me to hear. âItâs your Star Stone.â
I got to my feet and rushed to the Conference Hall. Tristan, Lewis and Lyra were running behind me but they werenât allowed inside the room. Anthony was also waiting outside eagerly.
âDid it hatch?â I asked as I locked the door behind me.
âNo.â Hellen turned to face me. The stone was still on the table but pieces were falling off and slime dripped from it. It had a green aura.
âBut itâs about to,â Alfred added. They were both hovering over the stone and breathing on it.
I stepped a little closer. I almost sat on the table. I put my hand on top of the stone. It burned my Sign so much that the skin completely peeled off, revealing a faded version of the Ophiuchus symbol.
Hellen put her hands on my shoulders from behind me. âIâm okay,â I told her. I got off the table and stood in the corner.
âItâs happening!â Alfred said. The stone broke off. A ball of white slime, it burst open. The serpent was ten feet long, with emerald green scales and fragments of Star Stones embedded into itâs skin. It didnât open its eyes. I thought I might throw up.
Hellen took my hand and pulled me over to the serpent. I tried to pull back but I couldnât fight against her tenacity. âHe wonât open his eyes until you put your hand on his head and allow him to,â she told.
She placed my hand on his head which was scaly and slimy. I didnât pull away because now I could hear him talking in my head.
May I wake? he asked, though I was baffled.
Yes, I answered.
He opened his yellow eyes. It slithered to the floor, I stepped back. He lifted his head and looked at me.
âBelle, show it your Sign.â Alfred whispered. I rolled up my sleeve. He stuck out his thin tongue and opened its mouth, baring itâs two fangs. It bit my Ophiuchus Sign, I felt like Iâd had a dozen energy drinks. My eyes widened and his teeth dug farther into my flesh but I didnât mind. For some reason, I knew this would help make my fading Sign visible again.
When he pulled away there were two holes which healed quickly and my Sign appeared more prominently on my wrist. It stung but the pain stopped just as quickly as it had come. If he had bitten someone who wasnât an Ophiuchus they obviously wouldâve died but he had injected something which brought back my Sign.
, I said to him.
he hissed.
If serpents could bow their heads, Rasalhague certainly did. I knew his name but I felt like I should confirm it from him. I didnât want anymore surprises.
I asked.
I gulped, trying to commit the name to memory. But I didnât have to. It was already present in my brain. As though I had been reminded of a long lost memory. It tingled in the back of my head.
âRasalhague is too long,â I decided. âIâll call you Rasal.â
Hellen laughed nervously and Alfred tried to smile.
he spoke in my head, and bowed his head even more.
âThatâs alright,â I accidently spoke out loud.
âWho are you talking to?â Alfred wondered.
âTo Rasal,â I smiled.
âYou can communicate telepathically?â Hellen asked, amazed.
I nodded. âHe apologizes for the mess, itâs just how heâs born.â
âIâll clean it up,â Hellen said.
âIâll help,â I offered.
âThatâs okay, Belle.â Alfred said. âGo take your snake outside. Give it some fresh air. get to know each other.â
âAre you sure?â I asked anxiously. Alfred nodded.
I sat down, next to Rasal. I touched his scales. I noticed that he had a huge Ophiuchus symbol imprinted on his skin in bright green but it was only visible in the light.
he started.
I have been reforming for quite some time now and it may have caused some astronomical hardships for you, he told. If there is some activity on your Constellationâs Star you will feel uneasy.
Thatâs alright, I hesitated. He had healed me so it didnât really matter, anymore.
Come along, I said. I walked out with Rasal slithering behind me. He didnât leave a slimy trail, thank Ophiuchus because I didnât want to clean up after him.
I demanded.
He slithered up my leg and rested around my waist, like a belt. His head was at my side and he lifted it every time someone stared.
he hissed.
I almost spoke out loud.
I walked to the girlsâ quarters. Amara yelped and jumped ten steps back. Lyra actually screamed. Raelynn noticed and copied her, even Phoenix looked afraid.
âWhat is that?â Lyra shrieked.
âWhere did you get that?â Phoenix asked curiously.
âThis is Rasal,â I told. âHeâs the snake of Ophiuchus and he came out of my Star Stone.â
Their mouths fell open. The rest of the girls lined up against the walls, scared.
âDonât be frightened,â I said. âHe wonât hurt you unless I want him to.â
âHow nice,â Lyra said, mortified. Amara was on her bed, rocking back and forth.
âI finished altering your dress,â Lyra said. âI even got some for Raelynn and Phoenix.â
âBut, my dress was fine. Only Amaraâs was a little lose.â I remembered.
âOh, nonsense!â Lyra said. âI had to make it fit perfectly. Itâs in my suitcase and since the wedding is in two days I got them done just in time.â
âThank you,â I embraced her.
We all tried on our dresses. Raelynn had a pink silky one with capped sleeves. Phoenix got a navy coloured with lace and it gave her body shape much like mine. Lyra kept her dress a surprise but we all knew sheâd look the best...next to Hellen.
Rasal had his eyes closed and was resting on my bed. He turned his head everytime I twirled in my dress.
I asked him.
I actually laughed out loud. Everyone thought I was going mad but they didnât know I shared telepathy with a serpent.
âWhy are you laughing?â Amara asked.
I told them.
âSo, heâs your personal servant since there are no other Ophiuchus to serve?â Phoenix asked.
âYeah, he belongs to me. Even his life is tethered to mine.â I told.
âMy dad told me that in our home province we had a sacred bull, in honour of Taurus,â Phoenix told. Raelynn made a face at that, Phoenix slapped her arm lightly.
There was a knock at the door. Raelynn answered, still wearing her dress. âItâs Tristan, Belle.â
âLetâs hope heâs not jealous of a serpent.â Lyra teased.
âOh, hush!â Amara demanded.
I changed into my sweatpants and a hoodie, walked outside, underneath the Stars with Rasal slithering behind me.
