Charles glanced at him sideways. âDid your PE teacher teach you language? You canât differentiate rationality from cruelty?â
âThe person who always got first place from the bottom for language doesnât have the right to say this about me.â Zachary raised his leg to kick him, but he was interrupted by a casual sentence from Charles.
âThis outfit cost 120,000 bucks. Friendship priceâone kick is two thousand. When youâre done kicking, put it on my card. Itâs okay if you forgot my card number. Iâll get my assistant to send it to your phone.â
Zachary retracted his leg lightning fast. âThe face of a capitalist sure is hideous.â
Charles did not mind him.
âBut really. Ms. Jones thinks too much. Itâs better if you take some precautions.â Charles lamented. âIâve fallen into the traps she set quite a few times, but I had no way to accuse her... In short, itâs difficult to put into words.â
The corners of Charlesâ mouth lifted. âDonât compare your low IQ to mine.â
âCharles Harris.â Zachary picked up the coffee. âWill you die if you donât attack me personally?â
Charles said lightly, âI wonât die. Iâll just be a little uncomfortable.â
â...â The fragrance of coffee spread all around. Zachary blew at it and took a sip. âThis coffeeâs not bad. Leaving it here with you is a waste. Iâll bring it with me in a while.â
Charles acknowledged it, unconcerned. âThere are still a few jars at home. If you like it, take it all.â
âItâs not too late to take it after I finish the drink.â Zachary put his coffee down under his distasteful gaze and said curiously, âHow exactly did Sophia provoke you two years ago that itâs not enough that you broke her leg and sent her to prison? Why do you still want her to remain at Dream Club?â
Light flashed in Charlesâ eyes. He glanced at Zachary. âWant to know?â
Zachary nodded. âIâm a little curious.â
âThen stay curious.â Charles recrossed his leg over the other. He lowered his head to tug at his tie, and his eyebrows were almost imperceptibly wrinkled.
â... You really are a cruel man.â Zachary picked up the gold-rimmed spectacles on the coffee table, rubbed them, and put them back on. âCharles, itâs enough to hit close to the mark. Leaving her a way out is good for both you and her.â
It was unknown what Charles was thinking of, but he snorted slightly. âAunt and Uncle asked you to beg for mercy on Sophiaâs behalf?â
âGuess so.â Zachary massaged the center of his brows and said helplessly, âAnd that silly sweet mentee of mine. Sheâs at my ear all day babbling about how Sophia is so pitiful. When she found out you and I are friends, she begged me to ask for mercy for her.â
Charles lowered his eyes. Sunlight streamed in from behind him. Half his face was hidden in shadow, so his expression was not clear.
Seeing this, Zachary said, âI was only saying it simply to complete the assignment my parents and mentee gave me. Do what you want. I wonât intervene. Itâs justââ
He stretched his tone. His gaze fell on Charlesâ body.
âHm?â
âRecently, Marie told me some interesting things about you and Sophia.â Zachary pushed up his glasses. âCharles, I see the situation clearer as a bystander. I personally suggest you donât overdo things, or itâll be too late to regret in the future.â
Charles smiled and disagreed. âYou shouldnât be a lawyer. Become a relationship coach instead or do MLM. You have a way with words.â
âIf you donât listen to a brotherâs words, youâll suffer in the days to come.â Zachary clicked his tongue. He shook the coffee powder and headed for the door. âIâm leaving now.â
When the door closed, Charles lifted his brows slightly. His lean fingers tapped the coffee table a few times.
Regret?
Up till now, he still did not know how to spell the word.
Beep.
His phone vibrated and rang. It was his mother calling, asking him to go back for dinner. He was about to reject out of habit, but when the words reached his mouth, he swallowed them and mumbled an agreement instead.
Charles drove back to Harrisâ residence. After tossing the keys to a servant, he went to the dining room.
Many people lived at Harrisâ residence. Aside from his grandmother who passed a few years ago due to illness, there were about twenty or so people currently living there including his grandfather, eldest paternal uncle, younger uncle, and his family. His two aunts had married and moved out, so they did not live at the Harrisâ residence.
Still, aside from the New Year holidays, each family ate by themselves. Master Harris favored the younger uncle and usually ate with him. He could not be considered warm to Charlesâ family or his eldest uncleâs, but he was not cold either.
âSit.â Yvette smiled. Fine lines rippled at the corners of her eyes, but it did not affect her womanly charms. âAunt Zelda made all your favorites.â
Charles sat down and cleaned his hands with a wet wipe. âDad hasnât come back yet?â
âUh-huh. Some issues appeared in the collaboration over at England, so his business trip has been extended a month.â Yvette lowered her eyes, her expression a little lonely.
Charles scoffed lightly and put the wet wipe down. âHas some issues appeared with the collaboration? Is that why he has to stay back another month, or has some issues appeared with his lover?â
Yvette sighed and said helplessly, âWhy wonât you leave me a veil to hide my shame? This makes me look bad.â
âCalculate the time. That woman should be giving birth soon.â Charles took up his chopsticks and picked up a mouthful of vegetables. He tasted nothing significant.
âUh-huh. Nearly.â Yevette took a bite elegantly. âI just donât know how long he can dote on this one.â
When she finished saying this, the two ate silently, not speaking for a while.
âTiff has been looking for me again these past few days. Since Will has gotten engaged, she doesnât know when Leah as the little sister can form a family too.â Yvette had a small appetite for dinner and put down her utensils after just a few mouthfuls.
Charlesâ throat worked as he swallowed the food in his mouth. He lifted a tissue to wipe some indiscernible oil stains at the corner of his mouth. âThe Jones really donât sit still even for a moment.â
âWhat do you have in mind, then?â Yvette smiled as she asked.
Charles leaned back on his chair. âDonât you dislike Leah?â
âBut the Jones family leaked the news that Leah got hurt for you two years ago and even got the media to imply that our two families will be connected through marriage.
âIf you donât marry her, the Jones family can work the angle and leak that you broke off the marriage because you disparaged Leah for hurting her legs. Itâll be hard to prevent a change in Harris Corporationâs stock prices. Losing a few hundred million will be the best outcome. Losing a billion or two will also be fairly normal.
Atrophy of Love: Mr. Harris, Stop Fooling Around!
ï¤Chapter 69 Reluctant? Forget It Then âGenerally speaking, itâs just losing some money, and the Harris family doesnât have to mind about this much money, but in the bigger picture, Grandfather is already over 80 years old.
âHe has always favored Uncle and the others. If you let the company suffer a loss because of some insignificant matter again, Iâm afraid the will that has been written will go through some changes,â said Yvette.
Hearing this, Charlesâs eyes darkened. âYou think marriage is an insignificant matter?â
âIf you donât have anybody you like, then it is an insignificant matter.â Yvette got Aunt Zelda to get her a bowl of soup. She then sipped on it.
Charlesâ fingers fell on the dining table. He began tapping it unconsciously.
Seeing his reaction, Yvette laughed lightly. âWhat do you mean by not saying anything? Is there someone you like?â
âYou donât have to sound me out. If I liked Sophia, I wouldâve gotten engaged to her two years ago,â said Charles.
