Chapter 45 of 493

Chapter 48

Sophia restlessly took a taxi to the Harris residence. There were many people who came for Yvette Cox’s birthday banquet. When everyone saw Sophia, the whispers started.

"Didn't Sophia go to jail for attempted murder? Is she out now?”

"How did she get in here? The thought of a murderer around me makes my skin crawl.”

"She’s still the White family’s daughter. How can she come here dressed like that? This is unbelievable!”

Amid their comments and strange looks, Sophia casually walked to the corner of the banquet and sat down.

Initially, there was a man in a suit and leather shoes who sat there. However, when he saw her sitting down next to him, he frowned, got up, and left with a disgusted look on his face.

Sophia did not mind too much, and her gaze was fixated at the entrance. Her heart was feeling as if it was being pressed on by a boulder.

Charles was not there yet, so perhaps he was seriously injured.

He had always been severe about things. She did not want to think about how he would make her pay for this time’s accident.

"Miss White, Madam wants you over there," the servant said as she walked to her side.

Sophia nodded and followed the servant to Yvette's room on the second floor with the surprised and curious eyes of everyone around.

"Soph’s here." Yvette wore a long purple evening gown. She looked noble and elegant with light crow's feet at the corners of her eyes as she smiled.

Her gaze paused on Sophia's short, spotty hair and the scar on her forehead. However, her gaze quickly moved away before it crossed the line of being disrespectful.

She was on good terms with her, and even after two years, she still treated her the same. It was Sophia who was a little restrained.

She lowered her eyes and said respectfully, "I hope you’re doing well, Aunty Yvette."

"Why aren't you wishing me a happy eighteenth birthday this year? Didn’t you always wish me to get younger with each year?" Yvette teased.

Sophia pursed her lips and said nothing.

Her reputation after two years of experiences made it so that she would never treat Aunty Yvette as it was before anymore.

"Oh, our dear Soph has become much calmer.” Yvette touched her short hair, sighed, and changed the subject. "I’ve made a gown according to your size two years ago. I don't know if the dress will fit, but why don’t you go ahead and try it out?”

The servant held the nude pink evening gown and handed it to Sophia.

"It’s alright, Aunty Yvette. I’ll leave right after I see my mother. Thank you, though."

Sophia did not take the dress. She was already content that Aunty Yvette had allowed her to come over.

Everyone in their circle knew about her two-year jail sentence. If she stayed at the banquet, she would only embarrass Aunty Yvette.

Yvette took her hand and rebuked, "Today is my birthday. If you’re going to leave right after seeing your mother, that’s hardly justifiable!”

"But my reputation..." Sophia licked her dry lips, too embarrassed to continue on.

"What reputation?" Yvette interrupted her with a smile. "You’re my favorite girly...”

She did not give Sophia a chance to refuse. She turned her head and told the servant, "When Soph is done trying on the dress, you can get Wagner and the rest of them to come over to fix up Soph’s hair and makeup. Her makeup’s too light. It’ll basically be gone under the limelight later on.”

Sophia did not want to crash the birthday banquet. She also did not know how to face her parents or what to say to them. However, Yvette was one step ahead. “Soph, there are more guests today, so I’ll go and greet them first. If you need anything, just ask Aunty Zelda.”

After she said that, she left immediately.

Sophia looked at the closed door with mixed feelings.

After she got changed and got her makeup and hair done, more than two hours had passed. More people had arrived at the banquet since then, all dressed gorgeously. Everyone was toasting, chatting, and laughing.

"Do you think Madam Harris asking Sophia to change her clothes means that she’s looking past her time in jail and wants her to be her daughter-in-

law?"

"That’s impossible! How can the Harris family want a daughter-in-law who has been in jail? Maybe she’s too embarrassed with how Sophia looked.”

As Sophia passed through the crowd, she heard someone talking about her. She stopped in her steps and proceeded to walk around the table in the corner.

A couple had been sitting around the table, but when they saw her coming, the two of them got up very tacitly. With furrowed brows, they walked away.

Sophia sat down and glanced at the crowd, but Charles was still nowhere to be seen. That made her even more nervous.

“Why is he taking so long to get back? Is the injury serious?’

"Sophia?" At that moment, Leah rolled over in her wheelchair, looked her up and down a few times, and smiled. "I thought you’d come here in your work clothes. No wonder I couldn’t find you the entire time. It turns out that you’ve changed into a proper gown.”

William stood behind her, and his gaze landed on Sophia for a while before he forced himself to move away.

Sophia frowned and did not say anything. She picked up a piece of cake to eat.

"Your dress is tailor-made, right?" Leah bit her lip and persuaded. "Sophia, the amount you spend should match your salary. Don't do anything that you shouldn't do for the sake of a little vanity."

"What kind of things do you mean? Like getting a sugar daddy?" Sophia said with slight sarcasm. She could not take another bite of the cake.

"I’m just telling you that for your own good. I’m just giving you a little advice. I didn’t mean it in any way.” Leah had an innocent look on her face. "You don't always have to be so hostile toward me."

Sophia pulled out a tissue paper, wiped the crumbs on the corner of her mouth, got up, and walked to another table.

The air always felt polluted whenever Leah was present.

"Why are you showing Leah attitude when she’s merely giving you kind advice?” William walked up to Sophia and blocked her way. "Or is it because Leah told you facts that ruffled your feathers?”

He felt uncomfortable at the thought of Sophia being a golddigger, pleasing different men every night.

"Do I have to report to you every time I get mad from being humiliated?” Sophia sneered. "Plus, even if I sleep with men for money, is it yours and Miss Jones’ business?”

“What a nosy pair of siblings. How disgusting.’

William's throat tightened. It was true that it had nothing to do with him, and neither was he in the position to nag her.

"Of course it is. After all, you used to be my friend. If you’re ever short of money, you can tell. There’s no need for you to sell your body for money."

Leah's voice sounded a little higher.

Even if they were in a corner of the banquet, there were still many people around them.

When people heard them, many of them turned their heads over. They were in disbelief, surprise, and disgust. They were watching the scene before them because everyone else was too.

"In any case, she’s still the White family’s daughter. How can she sell her body for money? Seriously?"

"The White family has already broken ties with Sophia two years ago. It could be a possibility."

"She has hands and feet. Can't she just work for money?"

"Are you kidding? Sophia didn't even pass the college entrance examination, and she only got into a second-rate university because her family paid for it. What else can a second-generation rich kid do besides asking money from her family?”

Sophia clenched her fists tightly, her blood boiling in anger. She looked at the wine glasses, plates, and vases on the table next to her. She could easily use any of them to smash Leah's head open. It was no big deal. She just had to go to jail again.
